Ball Don't Lie - NBA

UPDATE 11pm: This trade is on hold because Dallas forward Devean George has a no-trade clause in his contract. Yes, Devean George. Seriously.

Cue up the Toni Braxton; Jason Kidd is a Maverick again! Here's what they're saying out in the blogosphere about Wednesday's Dallas-New Jersey blockbuster ...

Mavs Moneyball: "It sucks, and it's stupid, and it sucks."

Tim MacMahon, Dallas Morning News: "Mark Cuban shot down the Jason Kidd trade rumors repeatedly, including a media-mocking chat while the Mavs were in Jersey over the weekend. Well, he told a whole bunch of white lies. ... "We like our team," Cuban has said several times, echoing Avery's ain't-interested-in-Kidd comments. Did the Mavs' brass like their team? Sure, they liked a squad that had the third-best record in the West. But they clearly didn't let themselves fall in love with it."

Stop Mike Lupica: "Next season the Nets save (presuming they don't re-sign Diop, Stackhouse and George) $12.5 million on their cap, dropping it down from $59.97 to around $48.4 million. That means they can sign a few free agents this offseason.  With Stromile Swift and Harris set to come off the cap at the end of the 2009 season, they would still be in a prime spot to try to sign some free agents in that well-stocked class (Rasheed Wallace, Elton Brand, Baron Davis, Andre Miller, Mike Bibby and Carlos Boozer are possible free agents that year)."

The Shamrock Headband: "Are you looking forward to watching Dampier and Nowitzki try to guard Shaq and Stoudemire or Bynum and Gasol come playoff time? Neither are Mavs fans. Diop isn't a great player -- he's not even a good player, although he's turned out better than the historic bust he looked to be a few years ago -- but he's at least a 7-footer who's allotted six fouls every game."

Objective Journalism: "I generally like Mark Cuban. He's outlandish, brazen, thinks he's smarter than most everyone else (he probably is), and stays confident regardless of what's said about him. Considering that, I don't really know why he would do this deal. To me it feels like he's trying to make up for the one bad business decision he's probably ever made; letting Steve Nash walk. A few years ago Devin Harris was promising enough to make resigning Steve Nash less than mandatory. Sure, there were questions about Nash's health and how many years he had left in him. This, however, won't fix that mistake. It compounds it."

Epic Carnival: "Dirk's gotta get nasty. Losing Diop's size and Harris' leadership means Dirk is going to have to put this team on his shoulders when it gets down. Howard is going to be the primary offensive threat, but more than ever, Dirk's going to have to be the go to guy, because otherwise they're going to get eaten alive offensively."

not a fan of this deal for jersey...no owner should trade a disgruntled player to benefit that player. the nets should have waited for a better offer and said to hell with kidd. What are they going to do with marcus williams now? that was a waste of an extension it seems....poor decisoins all around

This is the stupidest deal EVER!! Devin Harris has potential and they need dasagna as a defender. JasonKidd is 34 years old and he is not going to get any better. if you're going to trade for a point guard try to get Calderon.

Hey fight club...Calderon...are you serious. Calderon will get the mavs to the next level? How much finals experience does Calderon have....better yet how much PLAYOFF experience does Jose have?? LOL next to none if you ask me...Go ahead and bash the trade, but don't pull an NBA LIVE trade out of your "you know what." A trade for Kidd beats a trade for calderon any day of the week. I don't care how old Calderon is compared to Jason Kidd. Mavericks Need LEADERSHIP. DIRK WILL NEVER BE A LEADER. Why can't anybody see that??? This trade also will help develop Dirk as a low post player. WHIch IS WHAT THEY NEED. Kidd has 2-3 years left in him. KIDD IS HUNGRIER than EVER FOR A RING. Mavericks will be fine.

The Mavs are the prefect example of a great team with great players that cant seem to get the job done. How the hell did they lose to Miami in the finals? How the hell did Golden State beat the last year in the first round? They dont have any HEART. Thats why Miami & Golden State beat them because they had more HEART. So they figure that bringing in a person with HEART will help them win the big game. Will it work? NO!!!! Maybe if they were in the EASTERN CONFERENCE............. LOL

it seems like people are focusing more on what the mavs lost and not what they gained: a future hall of fame point guard who gets everyone involved, doesn't care about his own stats and has some serious motivation to get a ring late in his career. they could be very very dangerous on offense, although I agree interior defense could be a concern.

I agree with #5 (fightclub) New Jersey gets caps relief, a young PG, not a bad center, if her re-sign and 2 future 1st round picks. Mavs? Will get swept in the 1st round assuming that they even make it to the playoffs.

harris does have potential but mainly as a scorer, he will never get close to being the distributor that kidd is. also even though devin is a good defender, he is too small to match up against the stronger pg's in the conference. anyone remember baron davis abusing both harris and terry last year in the playoffs? harris' improvement wasnt going to change the fact that he is small and not very strong. kidd is a great player who will make that whole team better, especially dirk. any defensive deficiencies this team now has will be made up in offense as kidd will push the ball and ensure that dirk and howard get a few more easy shots per game. the mavs werent going to win it before all the trades in the west so they certainly werent after. this move at least gives them a better chance.

I would be happier if the Mavs could sign a guy in the class of, let's say, Nazr Mohammed, to solifiy their interior defense. Plus they have to bring Stackhouse back. Coming off the bench he's one of that guys you need to win a championship.
Great Deal for Jason, he's on a team that really contends now and he can finish his career where it started. Maybe the new system also bumpens up his FG%.
What are they going to do with Jason Kidd being the starter at PG for the east?

so a guy hurts his ankle and all of a sudden you want to trade him for an aging baller? seriously?!?!? i LOVE the dallas mavericks but i think that losing devin harris would be the most moronic move they can make. kidd may be a good player, but for how much longer? the guy is 35! lets face it, he's not gonna be fast and in top playing shape for much longer! on the other hand you have devin harris who is improving every single day and still has years to go in the league. the mavs need devin. so what if kidd is a good passer?....whoopty doo...give him a cookie. the mavs are making a huge mistake by trading a guy thats constantly on the move & improving his skills for a guy thats on the waiting list for retirement and social security. i just might have to become a nets fan.........

Yes, all the west teams should be very worried about what the lakers are going to become! Kidd and Shaq are old; GASOL has only been in the league like 5 years and is still young. The Lakers are going to be at the top for a very long time, so all the other teams in the western conference, (including SPurs), are screwed. Go Lakers and the twin towers!

First!!! Jkid won't bring a ring to the mavs, therefore this a stupid trade by dallas. Only reason why kid gets so many rebounds is because everyone on the nets are completely useless. Once he gets to the mavs he'll only get 4 reb a game. And Dallas runs set plays with a lot of dribble shots most of the time, they don't need a great passer, negating the best part of kids game. Nets still suck but at least they get picks and cap room. Also Harris is pretty good. Mavs get a nice kick in the crotch this year and for years to come.

why would you get calderon for harris? i mean he's really playing great right now but devin has more
potential. as for the kidd trade.,it really depends how much the mavs want to win right now.. they might win
the championship but become a crappy team like miami once kidd retires. as a mavs fan, i want this trade to
be done because it's really sad to see the mavs lose in the playoffs every year...all of them on heart breakers.
