Ball Don't Lie - NBA

Now that the trade dust has settled, here's what they're saying across the blogosphere about Thursday's last-minute Cleveland-Chicago-Seattle blockbuster ...

YAYsports!: "Believe it or not, this actually has me contemplating getting League Pass for the rest of the season. It’s not Gasol-to-the-Lakers or anything, but look at the dynamics of how LeBron plays, and you have be a little curious. Drive and dump to Ben … Ben can handle that, and we’re not entirely convinced (although we’re sure we wrote the opposite in the past) that Ben is completely washed up. Remember, he’ll be playing power forward for CLE, which paired with Z, makes them pretty big upfront."

FreeDarko: "Ferry took a crappy situation and made incremental improvements. Wally is not Larry Hughes, though I would encourage you all to remember—this man once stole a pass from teammate Kevin Garnett. And up in Seattle, he's made an art form out of freezing out Durant. Wallace's brokedown-ness is roughly equivalent to Gooden's poor judgment, but he exudes wisdom and can play center."

Empty the Bench:
"The Cavs have been starved for a real point guard for years, and now the Larry Hughes-as-point experiment mercifully comes to an end. His 2.4/1.8 assist-to-turnover ratio was eye-gougingly bad. Initial reports had Chris Duhon going to Cleveland, which made a lot of sense since he’s a pure point who plays solid defense, doesn’t shoot a lot and can knock down outside shots. Instead they got Delonte West, a guy with less experience and more upside. And while he isn’t a pure point either, he’s a step in the right direction. Delonte is much more comfortable running an offense, taking care of the ball and being unselfish."

Blog a Bull: "This isn't a type of trade that gives [Bulls GM Jim John] Paxson a 'genius' label (or restores it?) but it is officially an end to the jokes about his phone charger being lost, or his 'internet rumors' paranoia. His number one goal was (and should've been) to dump Ben Wallace, and he did it. Along with his fellow superdelegate Adrian Griffin, as well as Joe Smith. ... Wallace and Smith were 'earning' nearly 55 minutes of time in the frontcourt combined. And while Drew Gooden will take some of those minutes at the 4, Noah now starts (and gets most of his minutes) at center, shifting Tyrus Thomas up the depth chart at the 4. Getting more time for those two (and to a-much-lesser extent, Aaron Gray) was always the most important benefit to dealing Wallace."

"glennPDX," commenter at Supersonicsoul:
"Cute. Call it cap space if you want. That's not the game plan, and everyone knows it. Anyone know of a more dramatic example of an owner stripping down a roster of any major sport franchise? Ever? It's stunning, disgusting, and points in two directions: down and out. Adios, boys, see you in OKC (where the living is cheap and so will the basketball team) ..."

And one more ...

Hey Larry Hughes, Please Stop Taking So Many Bad Shots: "I can’t wipe the smile off my face. Did that just happen? Danny Ferry convinced another team to take Larry Hughes?! Ponder that for a moment. ... And now the question: What am I going to do with this site? I’m not sure right now, and I feel like I need a few days to figure it out."

Well Skeets...after oggling at KD's post count when you first signed on you've quickly posted a very solid 82 times so far. You're on pace to soundly pass KD's number in less time.

How could you possibly write about this, and not include the comments at: http://heylarryhughespleasestoptakingsomanybadshots.com ? The man is beside himself, and now must decide what to do with his future.

"drive and dump to ben … ben can handle that,"
oh, im sure ben can take a big dump. he's done it on the court many a times this year.
as for doing anything with the ball... please, when has he ever shown that capability?
besides, he is a 3 quarter player who has to be subbed when the came is close near the end.
with andy and prima donna wallace on the court together, lbj will have to carry an even bigger
load offensively. getting rid of hughes' monster contract was great, getting an even bigger
contract for a guy who has tanked it, whines, moans and is high maintenance is not.

Cavs are a good fit for Big Ben because it's LeBron's team and Wallace doesnt need to be a leader or the go-to guy. He can collect easy points and easy money. Cav's might make the Finals with Wallace, and were not going anywhere with the roster they had.

I like Wally World and Delonte, but I don't like pairing Ben with Ilgauskas or with Varejao, so I think Ben's minutes will have to take a hit. Him and Ilgauskas together clogs the lane and is maybe the weirdest salt-and-pepper front court combo of all time, and him and Varejao are too similar (offensive liabilities) to play together.

I think that this was a good trade for Cavs because now LeBron has somebody who can pull up and spot the J. If LeBron do the same thing that he is doing now they will be looking at a Championship. Go Cavs

I agree that Wallace and ilgaskus will just clog up the lane for lbj. the best part of the trade for Cleveland is getting Joe Smith and getting Gibson a starting spot in the lineup when he gets back. Wally and Gibson can be the spot up assasins that LBJ needs, the big question will be if West can handle the starting point and I believe he can. However, Hughes gives chicaco the bonified scorer that they needed and getting rid of wallace gets the youngsters in the game. i give chicago more credit in this trade and would not be surprised if Chicago makes the playoffs and goes further than Cleveland

Has anyone been watching King James over the last couple years? I'm not buying this "clogging" of the lane stuff. The man is a freight train that can stop on a dime enough said. He creates his own lane regardless of who is in the way...we all know this. The talk of Hughs being a scorer is just crazy, if you can't knock down open looks from LBJ how are you gonna do it with Gordon and Kirk? This is a very strange trade with a lot of bodies being swapped. It will be very interesting to see how it all plays out...

the only thing marketable about ben anymore is that fro. the league should love this. now they can ram lebron down our throats with another subpar supporting cast again, just like last year and claim ben made the difference, when it will be nothing more than a bunch of bad calls that elevate them.

Back to the Finals I say. Any blind man can see now that the cavaliers are one of the top three in the east. Now the king will truly be able to take his rightful place as the next big thing since Jordan and maybe even Kobe.

I agree about Hughes. He scores 41 points in one game and then sucks in ten game. The intervals of good games for him is too wide. I can't tell you how much I hate that guy. He's that big with so much potential and yet he sucks. Wallace is good defensively. Don't know about Wally but it will give James more options around the perimeter and hopefully the news media won't blame him for passing the game ball at the final secs like last year.

Wow. I just became a Bulls fan; they got the real talent...atleast on Shannon's part. All he need's is the time to grow, the way Lebron plays he'll be washed out in a few short years.

Are you attempting to say that Kobe is bigger than Jordan? You are out of your mind. Kobe is a great player, but he will never be as good as Jordan was. NEVER

Cleveland improved but they will not beat Detroit again. The Pistons are coming out of the East!!! Boston has the team but no experience in WINNING playoff basketball. Cleveland won because Flip flipped out and didn't double LaBron. That won't happen again. You now have three players who complain more than they play good ball. Good Luck!!!!
The Lakers (Best in the West) or San Antonio (because of their experience and the additions of Ime Oduka and Kurt Thomas) against Detroit. Count on it!!!

I am really having a hard time getting excited about this trade, and i'm speaking about getting Ben Wallace. I guess this is the best that can be had with the current talent available. I believe that Wallace really cashed in on his success with the Pistons and his style just happened to work very well with the talent of that Detroit lineup, but if you told me i'm getting a center who is 6-9, shoots 5 times a game and makes 2 of them, shoots 40% from the line, and is averaging 8-9 rebounds a game, and for 15-20 mil, i'd stick a screwdriver through my ears. Cartwright may have been sufficient thru the jordan years, but this isn't the bulls, and wallace will not match up against the the lakers line, or garnett, and isnt that why you try to get better??
