The Charlotte Bobcats have extended an offer to restricted Rockets free agent Carl Landry, leaving Houston with a week to match the offer or lose the forward. Here's what they're saying out in the ether about the tentative John Hancock ...
Rick Bonnell, Inside The NBA: "Regardless of how the Carl Landry offer sheet works out, I like what the Bobcats did Wednesday. The Bobcats have a realistic chance of making the Houston Rockets blink by offering restricted free agent Landry $9 million over the next three seasons. The Rockets might just decide, in the face of paying luxury tax, that matching that offer is more trouble than it’s worth. And that’s what separates this gambit from what the Bobcats attempted last winter with Anderson Varejao. It was obvious the Cleveland Cavaliers would do what they had to not to lose Varejao for nothing. But Landry isn’t as important to the Rockets as Varejao was to the Cavs, so this could work. And even if it doesn’t, it shows some willingness to take a risk to address a problem."
Rufus On Fire: "I like Carl Landry. You like him. Everyone has a reason to like Carl Landry. And the Rockets have no reason to let him go. In some of my fantasies about turning around the Bobcats, we make a move like this, only it's for real, and we get to keep Landry, start him at power forward, and that way we'd have, essentially, three power forwards grabbing boards and being menaces on defense, able to handle all manner of opposing frontcourts, in Wallace, Okafor, and Landry, with Mohammed and May coming off the bench for a change of pace. Unfortunately, in this situation, Daryl Morey isn't dumb (see: in the running for smartest GM in the game with Kevin Pritchard), so he'll likely retain Landry for the low price of $3 million per year."
The Dream Shake: "Daryl Morey, you are a genius, you proved your point, as $3MM was probably not far off from your offer and that's all he could get. He didn't go overseas like we all knew he wouldn't and you made his agent spend countless dollars of his own to get right back to the same spot they already were in."
Bobcats Baseline: "He is a tenacious, smart player who rebounds well and shoots a high percentage (sounds like a Larry Brown kind of guy, right?). He started getting meaningful playing time midway through the season and really stepped up when Yao Ming went down, eventually playing a key role in the Rockets big 22-game winning streak. He turned down the Rockets initial offer of 3 years, 5.4 million this summer, and there has been concern on the team's side about the condition of his right knee. Will the Rockets match and risk going into luxury tax territory? Could this evolve into a sign-and-trade? Perhaps most worrisome for Bobcats fans, what does this say about the team’s confidence in Sean May and his knees?"
Hardwood Paroxysm: "... is the whole ordeal worth it for a player that doesn't actually fit all that well with the rest of the roster? Charlotte needs a big man, that much is true. And I'm sure it would help us all sleep more soundly at night knowing that Gerald Wallace isn't a concussion waiting to happen at power forward. But isn't it clear at this point that playing Emeka at center is not the answer (and it's not like playing Landry at center is any better)? Sure, paying Landry to grab boards makes a hell of a lot more sense than paying Sean May to grab eclairs, and the Bobcats seem to understand that (I don't think there could be a bigger vote of no confidence in May's recovery than this). Regardless, that's not exactly an option at this point. Instead, we'll get to watch May stuff bear claws into his mouth by the handful on the bench and watch Landry churn out bloated PER year after year for a contender."
Matt Moore, FanHouse: "The offer is for $9 million over three years, which puts it in the range that Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey had said he would match, which the Rockets have seven days to do. When I asked Morey in July whether he thought Landry would be back with the Rockets next year, he remained impassive regarding the situation. The fact that that Rockets took so long to resolve the issue could indicate that the injury concern is enough to make Landry's value dubious."
Rockets Addicts: "Daryl Morey really looked like a genius picking this guy up in the second round, but there are risks that come with genius picks, and Landry's major knee problem was enough for 30+ teams to pass on him. Landry missed his entire Junior Year at Purdue because of knee surgery, but had a resurgence in his Senior year — with a big brace on his knee. At first it seemed we had won on our gamble, but then, 17 games into the streak, he was gone. We went on to win five games without him, and he was back two games after that. Landry all of a sudden was not Baker's Landry: He was tentative. His dunks turned into layups. His offensive boards became kick-outs instead of put-backs, and his And1's became jump shots. Although still effective, he was not the player he was before the injury. Landry depends on his athleticism and his spring and is merely average without them. He came through at times in the playoffs, but it was a spotty showing at best."

(Alston, McGrady, Artest, Scola, Ming with Battier as the 6th man for shutdown defense and if/when McGrady gets hurt)
It never hurts to have crazy depth.

the offer is less than some of the rookies will make. may is making 2.6 million, morrison 4 million, carroll 5 million, the total team salary is 55 million way below the salary cap.
landry is a proven player who could have helped with defense , rebounding and hustle and the cats offer scrub money knowing they need help up front and don't have anyone available. sean may and morrison might stay injury free but that is a big ' if '. now what do the cats do, pick up a cast off on waivers.
the cats are spitting in the wind, going backwards, the window is closing on okafor, wallace and richardson, the cats need to get a lot better quick.
