Ball Don't Lie - NBA

A look around the league and the web that covers it. It's also important to note that the rotation order and starting nods aren't always listed in order of importance. That's for you, dear reader, to figure out.

C: Los Angeles Times. Bill Plaschke visits a giant, 50-foot statue of Shaquille O'Neal at Chaoyang Park in Beijing.
PF: SportsBiz, via FanHouse. The NBA is considering live streaming local games within local markets.

SG: Dime. Could the '08-09 Southwest conference be the most competitive division of all-time? (Answer: no.)
PG: Young, Black and Fabulous. Looks like Celtics champ Ray Allen got a second ring this summer.
6th: Cavs Board. Who should start at shooting guard for the Cavs — Boobie, Wally Z, Kinsey, Sasha or Delonte?
7th: The Sport Count. A "hard hitting" look at why Artest might've selected #96 as his new Rockets number.
8th: Docksquad Sports. Who helped unlock your destiny, Chris Paul? Who made you?
9th: Rocky Mountain News. Melo is enjoying his Olympic experience so much he's interested in playing in 2012.
10th: After the jump, BDL reader "The Patriot" is disappointed with the Redeem Team's two centers ...

"Skeets, I used my HD DVR to record the USA vs. Germany men's basketball game the other day. I come home from a long day of work excited to watch the recorded game. I turn on the game and its starts with both teams lined up and the German national anthem playing in the background. I found it rather amusing and disturbing at the same time to see Chris Kaman, (American born, non-German speaking Midwesterner), lined up with Dirk and the rest of the Germans.

After hitting the fast forward button a few times, I got to USA's national anthem where the camera pans on each of the players as the anthem plays. Each player has their hand over their heart and seems very grateful to represent the USA. The camera continues to pan over each player until it gets to the back row of players where Team USA's two centers, (Dwight Howard and Chris Bosh), have their hands behind their backs. Neither one of these guys had the respect, courtesy or even patriotism to put their hands over their hearts during the national anthem like the rest of their teammates.

Am I missing something here? Is this not the Olympics where you are representing your country against all other countries? Even in a regular NBA game you should put your hand over your heart during the national anthem so it boggles me even more so they did not do it during the Olympics. Maybe Chris Bosh has spent too much time in Toronto and forgot how that works. Dwight claims to be Superman, but other than apple pie and baseball, nothing is more American than Superman — no excuses for him. I lost all respect for these two stars. My vote is to force these two to sign with a European team like the rest of the clowns that have left the good ol' USA in search of the almighty dollar."

When I'm at press row, and standing for the anthem, I stick both of my hands behind my waist, grab the right wrist with my left hand, and bow my head slightly.
Question my patriotism and you'll get a head-butt to the nose.

lots of players don't put their hands over their heart when the National Anthem is being played. Just look at half of the NBA games, when they have someone singing the national anthem, most players have their hands behind their back. Dwight and Chris Bosh probably forgot or something, it's really not that big of a deal.

I wasn't aware you were supposed to put your hands on your heart when the anthem is played. You're not.

Get a grip, dude. Placing a hand over your heart doesn't make you any more or less patriotic or proud of your country. Mike Jordan always stood with hands behind his back during the anthem for NBA games. Does wearing a nice suit to traffic court make you more innocent than the defendant who shows up empty-handed?

Israel does not know how to compete fairly and denies it's own existence. That is why no true athlete is willing to compete for Israel.

It's just as acceptable to place your hands behind your back while the anthem is being played. Talk about grasping at straws.

Its called the national anthem...not the Pledge of Allegiance. If having your hand over your heart is required for the National Anthem then I guess half of America is non-Patriotic...

The only things that I consider disrespect are not standing and wearing a hat while the anthem is playing. Oh yeah, and singing the wrong words to the whole song... I've seen drunk jerks do that at Football Games. Or the ones that tell an R&B singer to "sing it right", just because he or she doesn't sing the same notes exactly as it's written. Sure, there are times when some people like Mariah Carey would throw in too much of their own flava that it gets old, but it doesn't have to be sung by a church choir.

I guess it's as rude to put your right hand behind your back, raise your left fist and lower your head during the anthem. And K-Dog, you are so unpatriotic. Traitor to your homeland. Put your hand on your heart. What the...

When the Australian National Anthem plays it's right wrist in left hand behind your back head bowed at sports events! When watching at home it's Googling... I mean Yahooing to find out what "Girt" means because you got too drunk last game and forgot what it meant when you looked it up that time! Seriously there is a line that goes "Our Home is Girt by Sea"!
Hand on their heart or not, they're busting their butts for their country, what do you do The Patriot? I bet you have an excellent paper route don't you?

Thank you for standing up for our country, The Patriot. Maybe those two forgot what happened on 9/11, but I know I didn't. When that national anthem plays, you better put your hand over your heart because if you don't, it means you don't love America and you should go back to somewhere else other than AMERICA!. Freedom isn't Free. Never Forget. These colors don't run. Love it or Leave it.
Actually, on second thought, you're an Idiot The Patriot. Nationalism does not equal Patriotism.

People seem to forget what 'being AMERICAN' means.
It's means having the FREEDOM to do whatever the fvck they want to do.
that's what being a TRUE American is, just like having the FREEDOM to bytch about it lol..

America has probably the most authoritarian culture among first-world nations so it's pretty fitting to hear those that project their cowardice through jingoism to attack others for not conforming to rituals that are ultimately meaningless expressions outside of promoting conformity. It's no coincidence that this sort are usually the biggest proponents for the War in Iraq yet tend to have the most excuses for why they're not over there fighting it instead of poor minorities.
