TJ Ford loses his cool, gets tossed

65-65, start of the fourth quarter. In comes T.J. Ford for Jose Calderon. Ford's next five minutes: missed shot, turnover, turnover, defensive foul, offensive foul, Napoleon complex!, tech, tech, ejection, sigh.

I've been one of Ford's biggest supporters and, some would say, apologist in the blogosphere, but I think it's safe to say that TJ is as good as gone from Toronto after this season. His play over the last few weeks has been so erratic that I'm not even sure giving him the starting PG duties back (or the return of Chris Bosh) would steer him right. I love his lil' man spirit, but this nonsense is embarrassing.

    T.J. has been an embarrassment since his return, like Nate Robinson on speed. I'm not sure what happened to him, but doesn't his injury history suggest that there is no way to get equal value for him? I wouldn't think a lot of teams would take on a guy who has forgotten how to pass and is one hit away from a serious neck injury. Maybe, off the top of my head, Pietrus and Patrick O'Bryant?

    Its sad to see over the past month. Ever since his return, somebody (Marbury?!) has occupied TJ's body and essentially wiped out all the good memories of the past 1.5 years. Someone please (Colangelo!!!) end this charade.

    I was a huge TJ supported heading into this season. I thought this was going to be his break-out year. I just can't understand what has gone wrong with him, its like he is completely different after the injury. Numba9, made great points and I think he is dead on!
    I hope BC can pull off some sort of deal, but realistically, with his injury history can the Raps really get 70 cents on the dollar?

    Hell don't blame him but yourself in his position his freaking out a little. He had a good thing going before he got knocked out. Afetr a hit like that you need some time to become yourself again, give him time to relax, there still hope, the old TJ is still in there

    How is he gone? His contract is really large for a guy with a spinal chord issue. I would think he is untouchable to most, unless the Raps will take Ben Wallace or something.

    Skeets,
    #9 got it straight.
    The time to trade Ford was LAST season, when some other teams in the league would have been willing to give the Raptors fair value in return for him.
    However, now that he's signed his rookie extension AND incurred yet another spinal injury scare ... whether (or not) the Raptors WANT to trade Ford might well be a moot point ... i.e. what will the other teams be offerring Toronto in exchange for their 'damaged' PG (who may no longer be the Raptors' starting PG, permanently).
    There are going to be some tough decisions to make in Toronto during the next 12-18 months.

    There is no tough decision to make. Calderone is and always was the better point guard. Raps have to swallow TJ's contract and have a 5 million dollar player on the bench. Hey it's not the first time, ahem...'Yogi' Stuwart.
    If you track the stats. The turn around when TJ is put in the game is blatently obvious. However it does seem like Sam seems to favour TJ. It's like he looks at him as a son or something. Or maybe sees a bit of himself in TJ. But for the future of the team you need someone who going to be a leader, and they definately have to display more maturity than a five year old.
    Numero Ocho all the way!!!

    raptors need tj, the team is good but no one is willing to be tough. sometimes it seems that sam m is the only one willing to let loose. and in the same game dwill got teched thats what moves the jazz offense. tj is the only one one on the team willing to set it off. remember when oakley beat the crap out of carter, and he actually started playing, (a long long time ago). thats what toronto needs to get anywhere in the playoffs, they might beat orl on skill alone but probably not clev. and yes i do agree that sometimes he does need to play like a passing pg instead of a scorer, he was doing that before he got knocked out. got -20 games to get it back.

    The time to trade Ford was LAST season (after they just acquired him? And before Jose really proved himself?)
    TJ, "an embarassment "since his return? Raptors fans are embarassing; TJ's in a drought.
    The raptors are flexible, they got expiring contracts, they're under the tax so they'll be flexible for next year. I'm sure if BC was an alarmist like the rest of you guys, we'd be over the tax and our starting liineup would be something like Calderon, Magloire, Villanueva, Bosh, Sundin.
    Ford's always had some bouts of lunacy when driving + the post ups with Kidd last year. Those are reasonable complaints. The spinal chord? He was fine last year, he was fine at the start of this year, and seeing as how you're not doctors and he's still a vertebrate, he'll probably be fine in the future.

    The tough decisons aren't just about whether or not Toronto keeps Ford on the bench and hands the team over to Calderon permanently ... but:
    i) What to do then with Ford, i.e. try to trade him outright or play him as their back-up PG, a role he may be uncomfortable with long term;
    ii) How much $$$ it will take to resign Calderon as a RFA;
    iii) What chunk will this signing take out of their 'Cap Space' this summer;
    iv) Which of their expiring contracts they are going to keep (if any) to continue building with around Bosh & Calderon (not Ford?) for the future;
    v) Which of their expiring conracts they are going to try and move in exchange for a part or two that can fill in some of their present puzzle piece vacancies? (to try and close the gap on Boston & Detroit);
    vi) What to do with J Garbajosa once/if he recovers fully from his leg injury? (i.e. keep him on the roster or trade away);
    vii) 2 years ago Sam Mitchell lost the vote as the worst coach in the NBA. Last year he won the vote for the COY. Is he really the head coach, Bryan Colangelo wants to go forward with into the future?
    ix) Is Andrea Bargnani ever going to develop into a cornerstone player for their team? (or is he just a tall 3pt-shooting role player, who they should consider moving in a trade ... i.e. like the Pistons eventually did with Darko)
    x) Although Bryan Colangelo has enjoyed an extended 'Honeymoon' period since becoming the Raptors GM ... serious questions will soon need to be asked about the direction this team is headed in, for the next decade with the key personnel pieces they have under contract right now, depending on the first 8 points in this comment.

    re: The time to trade Ford was LAST season (after they just acquired him? And before Jose really proved himself?)
    That's correct ... based on advanced level basketball acumen.
    It's a simple investment strategy ... i.e. sell high; buy low.
    Key is ... being able to tell CORRECTLY when something (i.e. an NBA player) is at it's zenith and when it's at low tide.

    seattle( have you watch Watson play?)
    Cleveland( west is good but neesd more of a sixth man role)

    And I think we need to remember that, before TJ's injury, he was having a great season. His injury was gruesome, and I think that it takes a long time to get back into game shape, both physically and mentally. He deserves some credit for trying, and definitely does not deserve to be written off right away.
    In terms of trading him, I do agree that his value is considerably lower cuz of his history of injuries. However, he is still one of the fastest point guards in the league, and has the ability to beat anyone with his dribble + that floater-shot. However, once again, I definitely think he deserves more chances.

    #9 you have a great point, but there are plenty of overpaid, ball hogging PG's in the league Toronto can trade for. Take your pick on the Knicks, and move on. I think Ford has the same problem as Marbury, that when the best player on team is down, he becomes the best player and that fact goes to his head. Put Ford on team where there is an unchallenged leader and top player and you will see him excell. As long as he is needed to produce, you will have a problem.
    Raptors are in same position they were with T-Mac a few years ago. Oft - Injured secondary star player (remember TMac was 2nd fiddle to Vinsanity back then) that they are unsure what to do. Tmac turned out ok (they should have kept him over Vince), but Ford may not, move him while you can still get something.

    i think t.J is still very talented and very one who is giving up on him with be change their mind as soon as the little guy gets back on track with his game. t.j's reslove is what i like most about him and the raptors would be fools to get rid of such a talent, a few bad game and everyone is ready to give up on him...why not bargnai who is playing like trash.

    haven't you all forgot that TJ has overcame alot of adversities to playin the league and has been consistant yet up to his point in his career, umm now that run last year wasn't just chis bosh, and if any of you can soley believe that it was you have been smoking the ole hooka filled with special fairy dust again, trust that toronto put themselves up aginst a curve with a 1-2 combo at the point position, case in point sdomeone hasd to be the starter & someone has to come off the bench, did you see his perfomance the other night again B. Davis, his 4th Otr. alone was among the best, if toronto does get rid of him they might not have that punch like before...imma go on a limb and say that he maybe in one the east coast power houses or a west cost abomination next year & for the sad part even stronger & healthier...

    We can all think, 'maybe he's got speed and some skill and just needs some time to get back to regular form'. but thats is not what makes TJ a liability. It's TJ's attitude towards the game that makes him a liability. He's selfish and childish and hes got tunnel vision. A good championship level point guard has to be intellegent, controlled, level headed, and have good court vision. TJ has none of the above. Just watch the tapes and just watch all the games he plays in.
    There's no doubt that he can score and break people down off the dribble. But just look at how many times he leaves his feet before he throws a pass. Look at how many times hes to fast for his own feet. And look at where why he makes passes. Most of the time he does not pass to make plays, he passes cause he has nowhere to go. Occasionally he'll get assist because the rest of the raptors are great shooters, but if anything he is not a point guard. He's more a 2 guard, just a really small one. If we want to play to his strengths maybe we should look at how denver utilizes Iverson at the 2 and Atkins & A.Carter at the point.
    Lol, but by no means am I suggesting TJ is anywhere at the level of Iverson. But if we're stuck with him for a couple of years, might as well make the best of the situation.
    Maybe Colangelo should have kept Charlie V and drafted Brandon Roy. Lol, then Raps would have a better point guard in Roy and a better big in Charlie V.
    Could you imagine if we kept Charlie V instead of trading for Ford, and drafting Roy instead of Bargiani for the number 1 pick. Brandon Roy + Charlie V VS. TJ Ford + Bargiani. Who wins this one????
