65-65, start of the fourth quarter. In comes T.J. Ford for Jose Calderon. Ford's next five minutes: missed shot, turnover, turnover, defensive foul, offensive foul, Napoleon complex!, tech, tech, ejection, sigh.
I've been one of Ford's biggest supporters and, some would say, apologist in the blogosphere, but I think it's safe to say that TJ is as good as gone from Toronto after this season. His play over the last few weeks has been so erratic that I'm not even sure giving him the starting PG duties back (or the return of Chris Bosh) would steer him right. I love his lil' man spirit, but this nonsense is embarrassing.

I hope BC can pull off some sort of deal, but realistically, with his injury history can the Raps really get 70 cents on the dollar?

#9 got it straight.
The time to trade Ford was LAST season, when some other teams in the league would have been willing to give the Raptors fair value in return for him.
However, now that he's signed his rookie extension AND incurred yet another spinal injury scare ... whether (or not) the Raptors WANT to trade Ford might well be a moot point ... i.e. what will the other teams be offerring Toronto in exchange for their 'damaged' PG (who may no longer be the Raptors' starting PG, permanently).
There are going to be some tough decisions to make in Toronto during the next 12-18 months.

If you track the stats. The turn around when TJ is put in the game is blatently obvious. However it does seem like Sam seems to favour TJ. It's like he looks at him as a son or something. Or maybe sees a bit of himself in TJ. But for the future of the team you need someone who going to be a leader, and they definately have to display more maturity than a five year old.
Numero Ocho all the way!!!

TJ, "an embarassment "since his return? Raptors fans are embarassing; TJ's in a drought.
The raptors are flexible, they got expiring contracts, they're under the tax so they'll be flexible for next year. I'm sure if BC was an alarmist like the rest of you guys, we'd be over the tax and our starting liineup would be something like Calderon, Magloire, Villanueva, Bosh, Sundin.
Ford's always had some bouts of lunacy when driving + the post ups with Kidd last year. Those are reasonable complaints. The spinal chord? He was fine last year, he was fine at the start of this year, and seeing as how you're not doctors and he's still a vertebrate, he'll probably be fine in the future.

i) What to do then with Ford, i.e. try to trade him outright or play him as their back-up PG, a role he may be uncomfortable with long term;
ii) How much $$$ it will take to resign Calderon as a RFA;
iii) What chunk will this signing take out of their 'Cap Space' this summer;
iv) Which of their expiring contracts they are going to keep (if any) to continue building with around Bosh & Calderon (not Ford?) for the future;
v) Which of their expiring conracts they are going to try and move in exchange for a part or two that can fill in some of their present puzzle piece vacancies? (to try and close the gap on Boston & Detroit);
vi) What to do with J Garbajosa once/if he recovers fully from his leg injury? (i.e. keep him on the roster or trade away);
vii) 2 years ago Sam Mitchell lost the vote as the worst coach in the NBA. Last year he won the vote for the COY. Is he really the head coach, Bryan Colangelo wants to go forward with into the future?
ix) Is Andrea Bargnani ever going to develop into a cornerstone player for their team? (or is he just a tall 3pt-shooting role player, who they should consider moving in a trade ... i.e. like the Pistons eventually did with Darko)
x) Although Bryan Colangelo has enjoyed an extended 'Honeymoon' period since becoming the Raptors GM ... serious questions will soon need to be asked about the direction this team is headed in, for the next decade with the key personnel pieces they have under contract right now, depending on the first 8 points in this comment.

re: The time to trade Ford was LAST season (after they just acquired him? And before Jose really proved himself?)
That's correct ... based on advanced level basketball acumen.
It's a simple investment strategy ... i.e. sell high; buy low.
Key is ... being able to tell CORRECTLY when something (i.e. an NBA player) is at it's zenith and when it's at low tide.

In terms of trading him, I do agree that his value is considerably lower cuz of his history of injuries. However, he is still one of the fastest point guards in the league, and has the ability to beat anyone with his dribble + that floater-shot. However, once again, I definitely think he deserves more chances.

Raptors are in same position they were with T-Mac a few years ago. Oft - Injured secondary star player (remember TMac was 2nd fiddle to Vinsanity back then) that they are unsure what to do. Tmac turned out ok (they should have kept him over Vince), but Ford may not, move him while you can still get something.

There's no doubt that he can score and break people down off the dribble. But just look at how many times he leaves his feet before he throws a pass. Look at how many times hes to fast for his own feet. And look at where why he makes passes. Most of the time he does not pass to make plays, he passes cause he has nowhere to go. Occasionally he'll get assist because the rest of the raptors are great shooters, but if anything he is not a point guard. He's more a 2 guard, just a really small one. If we want to play to his strengths maybe we should look at how denver utilizes Iverson at the 2 and Atkins & A.Carter at the point.
Lol, but by no means am I suggesting TJ is anywhere at the level of Iverson. But if we're stuck with him for a couple of years, might as well make the best of the situation.
Maybe Colangelo should have kept Charlie V and drafted Brandon Roy. Lol, then Raps would have a better point guard in Roy and a better big in Charlie V.
Could you imagine if we kept Charlie V instead of trading for Ford, and drafting Roy instead of Bargiani for the number 1 pick. Brandon Roy + Charlie V VS. TJ Ford + Bargiani. Who wins this one????
