TBJ Ep. 458: Sphinx Surprise

Monday to Friday, The Basketball Jones look at the big games and story lines from the night before with a mix of in-depth analysis and irreverent humor. As always, questions and comments are appreciated.

On today's show, Skeets and Tas discuss the early surprises of the NBA season. Which teams are gelling sooner than expected? Which players took a step backwards? Who is rolling with swagger? All that, plus shocking NBA costumes, the riddle of the sphinx and F-bombs galore.

A Bloody Mary for your Halloween hangover.

guys, don't you think the blazers are rather disappointing this year? i know they've only played 3 games but watching them play, it seems they're a lesser team compared to last year. and why the hell won't they start andre miller? he's hella better than steve blake!!

Come on now people lets use some common sense..it is a mere 3 games into the regular season! and your already throwing MVP to a guy who hasnt won anything yet! I love Melo's game, but to be a MVP it goes beyond just scoring and putting up numbers. You have to win constantly, be a standout player..BUT THE THING people always fail to recognize in the mist of MVP talk, is YOU HAVE TO MAKE YOUR TEAMMATES better...
That being said however..as a die hard LAker fan who believes Kobe Bryant is the greatest "skilled/fundamental" player ever..I'd say Dwight Howard is the MVP right now..

Finely, Orlando gets some recognition how can you have a lineup like Nelson, VC, Reshard Lewis, Brandon Bass, and Dwight Howard and not do amazing. Magic 2009-10 NBA Champions.

    HEY SKEETS,
Why is it that neither you nor Kelly made a top 10 list of the most important play of the night::: OPENING TIP?
Who's the highest jumper to take the middle ring? What kind of stats are there that show the % of jumps won by a certain player? Which team is guaranteed to lose opening tip every single night? Who is the smallest player to win a jump ball possession over a big man?
    GET ON IT!

Surprises: Danilo Gallinari at 22.7 per game. Plus, the Knicks are jacking nearly 40 treys a game. That eclipses even D'Antoni's Suns teams by more than 14 a night.

I'm with you, Arty. Just three games into the season and we're already calling for MVP for Melo? I love the Nuggets and I really like the change in Melo's heart and game but there's a long road ahead of us. Besides, I'm surprised that Skeets didn't mention anything about J.R. Smith in his blog. I'm curious what J.R. will do to the Nuggets' team chemistry - good or bad - and how Melo will respond to it.
    Go Nuggets!

Melo is not going to win MVP this year, sorry. First-half MVP noms are always a joke, the season is an 82 game marathon, and we'll see if Melo has the guts to finish strong. I'm putting my money on "King" James, D-Wade, or even Dwight Howard. Kobe will be in the discussion, too, but ultimately, the Lakers talent won't let him get MVP numbers.
