TBJ Ep. 457: King and Captain?

Monday to Friday, The Basketball Jones look at the big games and story lines from the night before with a mix of in-depth analysis and irreverent humor. As always, questions and comments are appreciated.

On today's show, Evil Waldo and Joakim Melas tackle a few questions. Is Stephen Jackson(notes) a good fit in Cleveland? Can Ron Artest(notes) replace Trevor Ariza's(notes) L.A. production? And is Aaron Afflalo the new Dahntay Jones(notes)? All that, and some talk about this regurgitated "Play-In Tournament" idea.

Happy trick-or-treating, kids.

Yet more proof most pundits don't know west coast players as well as they should. One more time: There is no east coast bias, just an east coast ignorance due to time zones. Again. West coast fans simply know eastern players better than eastern fans know western players.
Moving along. SJax, while nothing great, is very good, more than just a shooter. His D is very good and he can really pass. Sure, he's a head case, but he really tries out there and wants to win badly. In Cle that works.
Yes, he has too many TOs. But look up his stats recently, last year let's say, and learn. He had a month stretch where he averaged something like 20+, 8+ and 6+, (pts, assts, rbs.) For the year his across the board avg's were among only like 5 players who managed them.
So, SJax would also be a distributor. The fact you failed to mention his D and passing.....says, yet again, a lot about the time zones. If SJax were in the east i doubt you'd have missed that, it's not fresh in your mind.

I fear that Jackson will be this year's Larry Hughes... Off guard that can play defense, but may come with a shoddy FGP, a slew of TOs and a hefty contract that CLE will never be able to move...

Instead of playoffs for the 8th seed, playoffs for the lottery position. Rather than reward incompetence and exile the Roses and Griffins to the Kings and Grizzlies where they'd play 1 on 5 for four years before leaving, they'd go to mediocre teams and make them interesting (like the Bulls, and Clips before Griff went down). Also prevents tanking. Make them 3-game series and it leaves just enough randomness; seeds and homecourt advantage work just like regular playoffs.

I think the 8th seed play-in game idea is stupid. Sounds like just another money-grab for the NBA and owners. I think 82 regular season games is too many as it is.

@Alex: That's a cool idea. The teams that don't make the play-offs compete in a single elimination tournament for lottery position.

@ Jon - Stephen Jackson is an NBA champion and has more than just shooting ability. We did both agree that it was a good move. I just feel like he'd be a better fit on the 2nd unit; if he's playing well, push him in to crunch time.
And, Ronny Turiaf is a big part of that trade. If I was Ferry, I wouldn't pull it off unless he was involved. Big Z was destroyed by Dwight in the postseason; Turiaf is a better answer at the defensive end. What they were desperately looking for in Ben Wallace, they would find in Ronny.

Jackson does not have a hefty contract. In fact, it's right around what Mo Williams AND Anderson Varajeo are making.
And Jackson played some of his best ball in Indiana. East coast people know him, just like they knew Ron Artest before he moved out West.
Jackson is the exact type of player the Cavs need. He can put up 20 any given night and does well guarding teams top scorers (handles Kobe about as well as any team can hope).
Plus, it gives the Cavs exactly what they need to compete against guys like Rashard Lewis and Rasheed Wallace, a 4 that can spread the floor and guard them.
What you say? Jackson is not a 4? You're right, but Jackson can play the 3 allowing LeBron to move to the 4 when playing aganist the Celtics (when they have Sheed at the 4) and against Lewis (when he's playing the 4 and not the 3) in Orlando. Jackson can go mono-y-mono on against any 3 in the East.
Cavs can go 'small' too with Jackson at the 2. Gives them the playmaker then need along with Lebron. If West can contribute as well the Cavs will be tough to beat (gave the Celtics a game with no Jackson or West).
If I'm the rest of the NBA, I'm really hoping Jackson does not end up in Cleveland, not what they have to give up (unless somehow it's West).

    #14,
I agree about Turiaf, he'd be a great add.....but why give up Jackson and him just for an expiring? I mean, it would free up money, but I can understand why the Warriors aren't budging there.
I think in the end what could work is Jackson and Acie Law for Z......provided the Warriors agree to waive/buyout Z.
What does Z do for the Warriors anyway other than his big expring? I don't get why they would be opposed to a buyout and waiving him. They have bigs (if they don't move Turiaf in the deal), so he'll just sit on the bench. They'd save some dough too by buying him out.
Acie Law wasn't even active for the first game if I'm not mistaken. Doesn't hold much value in Cleveland (though he's a better ballhandler than boobie), but he does make the salaries match up so more of a throw-in. Cavs can toss there 2011 1st round pick too (this pick could be VERY valualbe....if Lebron leaves, that will be the year after when the Cavs could be a 30 win team).
It's not panic mode yet for the Cavs obviously, so makes sense to hold off a bit on a trade. I am interested in seeing how Z and Shaq can play together (it CAN work against certain opponents/lineups) before we trade Z.

Cleveland fans keep Z and Shaq, therefore youll have no way of guarding the pick and roll, your gm Sucks, they got the wrong parker, they should have gotten candace a much better player. Shaq got eaten up by the celtics, in particular paul Pierce in the last minute via the pick and roll. Did your pathetic GM not learn anything from last year. 80 more regular season games and you can saty goodbye to Lebrick or lebroom whatever you foolish cavs fans call him, he will not return. 22 pts and 14 rebounds for the overated cented you got from the Suns, im impressed LOL

Picking against your team Skeets? I understand the concept, but man...that may deserve another photo of you getting dunked on. Chris Webber on Barkley anyone?
No Jackson in Cleveland, never liked his attitude, they got enough to deal with Lebron and Shaq...
I'm all for a single-elimination play-in tourny, as mentioned the "hot team" will go into the playoffs. Season is already crazy long, what's another couple games? Would make things interesting at the end of the season. Don't care about the traveling, they get paid crazy money, sitting in first class for max 3 extra flights can't be that bad. More games/money for owners and NBA.

Jackson a second unit guy?? No team would take on Stephen Jackson's personality and salary to have him come off the bench. He's one of the toughest defenders in the league and would be a much more efficient player under less duress on offense. That is a terrible assessment of why the Cavs should covet Stephen Jackson.
Other than that, I look forward to another season of TBJ

Come back when you understand basketball a bit more.
Cavs needed center to help guard Howard plain and simple.
And what did they 'give up' ? Wallace and Sasha....wow, stop the presses.

Cavs line up would be: Mo Will, S-Jax, James, Varejao/Turiaf, Shaq... bench:West, Parker, Varejao/Turiaf, Powe... not bad
Warriors: Curry, Ellis (who i think they should trade as well!), Buike/Morrow, Randolph, Biedrins.... bench: Buike/Morrow, Ilgauskas, Watson, Law
    nice trade for both teams
