When the retina is detached (whether it is partial or fully detached) and surgery is done to correct it, it still has to remain in a certain position to heal correctly and for vision to return to the impacted eye. A minor bump could cause the retina to detach again. Feet hitting the ground while running can cause it to detach again. Therefore, rest is the only thing that can be done to heal it properly.
Before making assumptions about him playing with a patch over his eye, do some research.
