Ball Don't Lie - NBA

J.J. Redick enjoys jumping rope, but he isn't getting much burn in Orlando, and he's recently requested a trade.

Orlando Magic GM Otis Smith enjoys signing Rashard Lewis to a six year, 118.2 million dollar contract. He recently met with Redick to discuss trading options. Let's listen in:

J.J. Redick: Hey, Otis.

Otis Smith: J.J. Redick! Van Gundy told me you'd be coming up.

Redick: Yeah, we have to talk.

Smith: About what?

Redick: I'm not playing much. I've sat out more than half the games we've played; I'm not even averaging double-figure minutes. I can shoot, I can contribute, and I need to be traded to another team.

Smith: I don't want to trade you, J.J. Redick.

Redick: Just "J.J." is fine. And, yeah, you have to trade me. You don't think it's working out, do you?

Smith: No, you're probably right.

Redick: Here's the thing, and I don't want to come across as your typical Duke [jerk] here, but I'd like to make the trade myself, if you don't mind.

Smith: What?

Redick: You're not a good General Manager.

Smith: We're one of the best teams in the East.

Redick: The East. Yeah.

Smith: We made the playoffs last year! I put together this entire team!

Redick: Except for ... ?

Smith: Except for Dwight Howard.

Redick: Except for Dwight Howard. And except for ... ?

Smith: Except for Jameer Nelson. But I signed both of those guys to contract extensions.

Redick: Bold moves.

Smith: I don't see what this has to do with ...

Redick: I like the guys on this team. They're good mates. They're also winning in spite of you. You're horrible.

Smith: I am not horrible.

Redick: Yeah, you are. Like, "let's give Brian Hill another chance"-horrible.

Smith: I fired Brian Hill!

Redick: But you also hired him. You hired Brian Hill!

Smith: If this is about where I'd trade you, I can assure you that ...

Redick: It has nothing to do with that. I like the guys on this team. I don't want them to have to suddenly become Darius Miles' teammate.

Smith: Is he available?

Redick: See! See that little thing you did with your eyebrows? How you went a little cross-eyed, there? Darius Miles did that to you! Watch this: Stromile Swift

Smith: I wonder if the salaries match with ...

Redick: See! You did it again. If you had a tail, it'd be thumping the linoleum.

Smith: This isn't really fair, J.J. Redick.

Redick: "J.J." is, again, just fine.

Smith: You don't know the salary cap like I do. You don't know the rules.

Redick: But you do. And it's killing this team.

Smith: What do you mean?

Redick: Bobby Simmons

Smith: I wonder if Larry is still up ...

Redick: Rashard Lewis makes almost 15 million dollars this year. He's in his prime, he's our third-leading scorer, and we're still third in the East. In 2012, he'll make in excess of 21 million bucks.

Smith: Damn.

Redick: Yeah.

Smith: So, you're saying I should lock that [stuff] up until 2017? See, you just don't know the salary cap J.J. Redick ...

Redick: How about just, "Redick?"

Smith: ... Lewis isn't eligible for a contract extension yet.

Redick: No extension.

Smith: No extension?

Redick: You paid way too much. He's not worth it. You brought Bo Outlaw to camp last October. You thought hiring Billy Donovan was a good idea.

Smith: J.J. Redick, you're way out of line.

Redick: Fran [flippin'] Vasquez.

Smith: HE STILL MIGHT COME OVER. A MORE EFFETE JEFF FOSTER, I DON'T KNOW WHAT'S WRONG WITH THAT!

Redick: Zach Randolph

Smith: Ooh, good complement to Dwight. I wonder if ... whoa, not fair, J.J. Redick.

Redick: It got you to stop screaming.

Smith: You have to let me do my job, J.J. Redick.

Redick: Few GMs need to do their job less than you. Take it easy. I want to do whatever it takes to stop Coach Van Gundy from having to yell, "Sub! Garrity in, Szczerbiak out!"

Smith: That's not a bad platoon, Seattle's three hours behind us, right?

Redick: Mike James

Smith: Bound to bounce back, good shooter ... hey, give my cell phone back, J.J. Redick!

(J.J. Redick scurries away with the cell phone, runs out of the building, hops into a waiting hot-air balloon, and flies away. It's my website, the story goes how I want it to.)

JJ's part has got to be more involved in this one. Problem is, I don't know a thing about him, so it might not be funny anyway :)

lol freeking lol. hillarious. Lewis got PAID. for a 1 dimensional player to get that kind of money is insane. Once again proving GM's are not smart as you think they are. As a fan, you have to ponder why do i have to pay 150 bucks for avg seats to watch Lewis avg 15/3/3 and play no defense. Seattle's GM was a genius to just let him walk. (although i would have signed him for 11 mill, supposedly what lewis was asking for)

KD, I don't know if you've already planned this or not, but a "Shocking Dialogue" starring Kevin McHale seems inevitable.

    LOL...That's some funny stuff.
Seriously thought, J Kidd is available and if we pkg JJ with half the team (obviously retaining the obvious) it think it would be a good trade. Thoughts???

I can't wait for a shocking dialogue involving anyone on the Spurs - for the Spurs, ANY dialogue would be shocking.

well, I understand Lewis is well overpaid and probably shouldn't get more than 10 or 11 mil a year, but someone was probably going to offer him a max contract anyway, so I wouldn't complain that much about it. Plus, if he gets back to where he's been the last few years, he could be worth it to take the pressure off of Dwight. He's a hell of a shooter when he's playing well, and I think I saw him play D once or twice in the past few years.....funny article though...JJ doesn't want to come off as another Duke jerk.....

J.J is a good shooter, and he is fast but his size is not his strength, he needs to bulk up and become a better defender. Otherwise his opponet is going to just back him up in the post.

J J can be a starter if the team was right. All he is is another Kerr or Paxson type. Is he a defensive liability? Yes but so were the guys that I mentioned and they got rings. J J has good trade value to the right team. Perhaps Orlando should try to utilize that before J J loses the value. The Timberwolves need someone to hit the 3 ball.

the reason turkoglu is getting so many shots is because the defense is trying to stop howard and lewis. also jj redick is never going to do anything more than stand and shoot

Kelly, I know you think you're funny and I'm sure it's probably unintentional, but your dialogue sounds a bit racist and something I might expect to hear on a Howard Stern phony phone call but not nearly as witty. Otis Smith is not the best GM in the league but he is not even close to the ignorant picture you're trying to paint.

Hey Miguel, are you kidding me... all smith has done is overpay for Lewis, and draft fran " Im a fraud" vazquez... He needs the axe... Not to meantion he signed nelson to an extension large extension when he will never be a good starting point. 35 million for a pg who should be used like vinny the microwave johnson. Howard fell into his lap. The only hope is that smith can somehow use nelso and Redicks contracts together to get a decent second option. Other than howard no one plays defense and as we all know defense is what wins championships. If otis was any good he would have traded Turk for Artest... at least this would have provided us with some perimeter defense and if he walked after this year, we could use the salary cap space to attempt a sign and trade for Arenas!!

I know this is an inter conference trade but how about sending redick to Atlanta for sheldon Williams? both seem to need new addresses and at least Williams helps our interior defense and gives us a bit more size

Andrew, I think you missed my point. I don't think Otis Smith is going to win Exec of the year anytime soon. I think he's in the bottom half of the league and shows no sign of getting any better than that, but this article makes Otis Smith sound like dumb, illiterate stereotype. I mean, come on, don't your hear the undertones, although subtle. "HEY JJ REDDICK" But to answer you in regards to your comments, you can't believe all the rumors you read, like the Artest one and others. No one knows what goes on behind closed doors, not even web site contributors. Your Arenas attempt is a stretch at the least, he's injured more than R. Lewis, plays no defense, and Wash.can still offer more money. You can't bet on what if.

This is a guy the Cavs could add that would help. If he can still shoot, he'd be a tremendous addition to the team. He's also a guy they could get. He'd help keep the lane open so LeBron could drive. And of course at the end of games, he could make free throws. he could be like Paxson/Kerr , they played well with Michael Jordan. Redick could be the same with LeBron.

The really is no sense discussing trades until Smith is gone and we get a good GM. Otis has proven he has failed over several times. Of couse the rich owners of the magic really don't seem to care. Keeps Son in laws busy I guess. Just don't have an answer that even makes any sense to me. Kinda sad really
