Ball Don't Lie - NBA

It's about time we got ourselves a new NBA soap opera. I've been going through withdrawals ever since "The Steph and the Restless" went off the Internet airwaves. (What? Don't judge me. I love my stories!)

The Minnesota Timberwolves held a news conference Friday afternoon to introduce first-round draft choices Jonny Flynn(notes) of Syracuse and Wayne Ellington(notes) of North Carolina.

Just one tiny problem — No. 1 pick Ricky Rubio(notes) wasn't in attendance.

But not to worry, not to fret — Friday morning, according to Don Seeholzer of the Pioneer Press, Wolves President of Basketball Operations David Kahn cautioned not to read anything into the strange situation.

Well, I tried my best, I really did. But before I knew it my eyes had slipped and I was re-reading Spanish news that Rubio's father said it was possible his son may stay in Spain for a few more years rather than come play in Minny. But, again, I wasn't really reading into anything. It was probably just a coincidence Rubio wasn't at the press conference, right? Maybe the Wolves' staff had the air conditioning cranked too high. Kid hates the cold.

Jokes aside, Kahn made it abundantly clear that the team is prepared to play the waiting game for a player who just turned 18:

"Nobody here ... will be banging his fist on the table, saying, 'He must be here!' It's a very complicated matter," Kahn said Thursday night. "We need to understand that we're not in control of the situation vis a vis the buyout. ... I think it's too early to worry about that. But I said this to the agent tonight: If any team in this league can afford to wait a year, dare I say two, it's us. Y'know? It's us."

Cue the Johnny Mathis!

It's getting pretty obvious that they're gonna have to trade him. It's not quite a Steve Francis-Vancouver holdout, but Ricky won't wear a Timberwolves jersey ever I'm guessing.
Mr. Morey, do your thing. Get us a Rubi-O.

If he doesn't want to play for the team that picked him , he will not be able to play for anyone else in the NBA unless he is traded away. Minnesota holds the rights for him, and this young man and his dad don't understand the rules and regulation. I think Rubio and his dad figures if they stay in Spain long enough the fumes will clear out, and his son will be able play for any team in the NBA.

Idk where Rubio wants to play. First he doesn't want memphis, now he doesn't want minnesota, a player of his draft status probably isn't going to be easy for a playoff team to get, so why don't he just accept playing for a losing team.

The Knicks don't have anything to trade us!! I mean, unless we're going to package a whole bunch of expiring contracts for Curry and Jeffries. Hmm, that just might work. I'll check the trade machine now!!

are you kiddin' me?? this kid should be happy he became a lottery pick...
he's so overrated its not even funny, he doesnt have anything close to a nba body, can't shoot the ball...
his father thinks he's doing everyone a favor by keeping him in spain for a few more years?, he's really doing puzzled khan a favor from losing his job...
Kevin Mchale wouldve never made this pick if he was in office because we all know his basketball iq is better then to draft both rubio and flynn...
The new guy Khan is a fool, i feel bad for twolves fans...

First of all, drafting Curry and Flynn would make no difference since they are both gonna play the point as well. Personally, as a T-Wolves fan, as flashy as Rubio is...I think Flynn might be a better pro. I was so impressed with him in the Big East tourney. Hopefully, when they trade Rubio, they can get a shot-blocking center for him or an athletic slasher who can shoot outside.

Trade Rubio to NY for Hill and next years 1st round pick since NY will still suck next year and we will get another pick. So next years draft would be Minn 1st round pick, Denver's and NY. Maybe next years draft will be a better one, and still MN has Henderson and Flynn which is great plus Hill to fill a FWD position. Its not that bad of a situation to be in.

You Americans don't get it. Why should he have to lose money to play for a team that he doesn't want to. If he has a 6.6mil. buyout, he might as well just stay in Spain, at least for two more years until the buyout goes away. If Minnesota wants to wait, fine. But I bet he if says "seeya," they'll trade his rights to another team and if he's in a big market, it'll be easier for him to get the endorsements. Face it, there isn't even a direct flight between Barcelona and Minnesota!

What a loser. The answer to post #4 is that the pick is lost forever. Although Minn. will hold rights to Rubio should he ever play in the NBA. I hope Minn. doesn't trade him. In fact, if he doesn't play this year, I hope they give him minimum salary and make him ride the bench. NBA should be allowed to sue these guys who come over to feel out the draft and then decide to play in another league if they don't get what they want. You should be contractually obligated to play if you enter the draft. What bull. I don't even like the T'Wolves, but I don't like little girls who cry when they don't get their way. If you don't like the place you go to, sign a minimum length deal, do your time and go to free agency. Politely request a trade if need be behind closed doors, and play your heart out to earn it. Maybe an escape clause could be added at the time of the pick for a player to drop out of the draft that allows a team to select another option and bans the drop out until the next year.
Another agenda I would like to see is an addition to player contracts that states if they are proved to be 'tanking' or verbally bashing their team, or demanding a trade then their contract should be allowed to be terminated without payment to allow the team to pursue other options. Enough of these ridiculous salaries being paid to people who go off the deep end like Marbury and Tinsley. There should be some sort of NBA program that handles players like these. You can't ask owners not to spend money on someone for fear that they might go all ganster and make fans not want to watch them play (Tinsley) or go completely crazy and make people a little less intelligent everytime they listen to you (Marbury). BTW, any mispellings or grammar mistakes are do to the last statement. So blame him. I am not saying that a player can't request to be traded, or voice concerns about his team's direction, I just don't think they should be allowed to hold a team's decisions hostage with threats or bring down a team's attendance by voicing that they don't want to play for a team anymore. No one wants to go watch a guy who says he doesn't want to play for the people watching /paying him. Anyways, rant over, carry on.

Well they could have just asked him if he was going to play for them before drafting him (thats if they actually want him as opposed to using him as trade bait). Its been fairly clear that Minnesota wasn't one of his favorite places, so why pick a guy that doesn't want to play there and then pick a guy who is in direct competition to him. I'm sure that picking Flynn doesn't make Ricky more likely to come.
