Ball Don't Lie - NBA

NEW YORK, NY — National Basketball Association commissioner David Stern has scheduled a news conference later today at which he is expected to announce the cancellation of the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 NBA seasons.

Friday, after the New York Knicks managed to free up enough cap space to lure LeBron James and another All-Star caliber free agent in 2010, it was all but certain this would mark the first year since the 1998-99 NBA lockout season that games would be called off.

"There's just no point in playing basketball right now," Stern said in a recent statement. "LeBron James to the Knicks is a done deal. All New York needed to land LeBron was the cap room, and now they've got it. So, why risk injuries to superstars like LeBron, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh over the next two years, when no one even cares about this season or the next? Have you been reading the papers or blogs lately? It's all about 2010, baby. We're living in the future!"

The Knicks traded their two leading scorers, Zach Randolph and Jamal Crawford, in separate deals and brought back a bunch of serviceable players whose contracts all expire in 2010, the year James will be a free agent.

"We'll take some time off and spend it with our families, play some golf, catch up on Heroes, and then regroup in October 2010," Stern said. "That's when we'll get the NBA going again. The Knicks will have LeBron, everyone will be rested, it'll be great."

Further flexing his business muscles, Stern is also expected to cancel Christmas.

    Heroes is unwatchable.
That said all this whining about the Knicks's maneuvers could be easily solved by removing the idiotic salary caps so that GMs focus on building teams rather than creative accounting.

typical NY jackass story and plot line. I see plenty of heroes in NBA now compared to the 'gangsta" Pistons and Bulls era. Garnett, Pierce, Nowitki, Duncan and more compared to the Rodman, Laimbeer and more

JE Skeets is the worst writter yahoo and its crappy news has writting for them.. Did you see his power rankings?? The Cavs were ranked 3rd and he just talked about 2010. Get over it, its 2008, no one cares about 2010 except for Knicks fans because the Knicks suck. And why is MSG basketball mecca, what great basketball was ever played their. I could understand Boston or LA boasting such a claim but NY, what great basketball was ever played by the Knicks???

Wuuurd Kerr was legit. For a former player he was a decent writer and covered some surprisingly insightful stuff. He should just leave the Suns and come back.

As much as it is funny to see Stern risk losing two years of potential money from hard-working people not willing to watch the game at home and paying players for not doing anything for the next two years just because of one guy who is completely overrated, it isn't worth it. What about the WHOLE of the NBA? Two years and what if all those free agents go back to their respective teams? All that for nothing. This would be a big screw you to Kobe and the Lakers. LOL. And what about those older players chasing pipe dreams like Jason Kidd or Steve Nash? Seems like Stern is using Lebron as an excuse to stall the seasons so he can take full advantage of New York's big market. Then you'd have the Giants, Knicks, and perhaps Jets, if Favre can make a clear decision.

New York is the basketball mecca because some of the biggest basketball legends have come out of the inner city streets of NY. Players come to courts like Rucker to prove themselves and get street credibility. Sure, we haven't won as many championships as LA or Boston, but the true heart and soul of basketball remains in NY. That being said, it is a true tragedy that the Knicks have been so terrible these past few years. I hope the coming of D'Antoni can bring a change to that. As young as the season is, I see that these Knicks are finally playing hard and are enjoyable to watch.
