Two former lottery picks switch places. One works his tail
off but isn't really that good, and the other sulks and mopes and isn't really
concerned with much beyond trying to hit pull-up jumpers.
And yet, somehow, both of these guys will be termed "disappointing" in any write-up regarding this trade.
Shelden Williams will be off to Minnesota. He was a real reach for the Atlanta Hawks a few years ago at fifth in the 2006 Draft, and he brings the effort every time he's out on the court, but he's an 11th man at best. Sturdy frame, bad hands, not all that skilled.
McCants, off to the Kings, is a different story. You wouldn't want him starting for your team, even when his attitude is at its best, but he does have skills. A solid crossover and good, if sometimes streaky, stroke.
He's essentially a trillion different NBA players that you've come across over the years. Big attitude, thinks his game is better than it is, good shooter, shoots too much when he could drive more often, doesn't want to put in the work in any other area.
And though defense and rebounding (the two things Williams is sort of good at) is what Sacramento needs the most at this point, he just wasn't going to affect the team at all in this area. McCants is worth taking a flyer on (because players like Rashad change all the time, right? Remember when Ricky Davis suddenly put it all together?), and his salary expires this summer. Same with Williams'.
Rookie guard Bobby Brown was also sent to the Timberwolves, while Calvin Booth will be a King for the rest of the season. Brown actually has a (small, around $700k) deal that doesn't expire this summer, so you'd think the Timberwolves might be interested, but he's had a horrible rookie year. Booth's contract is over after June.
