Sad news out of Texas this morning: Spurs coach Gregg Popovich's unruly training camp beard "passed away" last night from complications due to shaving in his San Antonio home," reports Mike Monroe of the SA Express News.

Pop showed up for Wednesday's preseason game against the Wizards with his formerly flowing Castaway beard trimmed to a length certain to meet the approval of the NBA's style police.

"It was a lot longer yesterday," Popovich said. 'I had to look halfway clean, so it wouldn't look quite so much like I was going to steal something from somebody."

The Unruly Training Camp Beard is survived by his wife, Erin; children, Micky and Jill; superstar power forward, Tim Duncan of the Virgin Islands; and the rest of the San Antionio Spurs organization.

The Unruly Training Camp Beard's family requests that in lieu of flowers or after shave balm, donations are sent to poor Salim Stoudamire. Arrangements courtesy of Gillette Funerals.

oh man anthing that covers his face is a blessing. i live in san antonio, i'm not the biggest spurs fan but i'll chear for my home team, not like some of the idiots around here who don't come to work the day after a spurs loss. but having to look at pop's face is going to make me go blind, you know that kind of blind that happens when you see something really shocking or scary. he needs to keep it. then we can start working on his clothes. the beard is bad a though. as a player i would respect a guy with a beard like that more than a guy with a face like a teenager.

Pop looks good with the beard and much better then without it. What is with all these grown men wanting to look like effeminate little boys anyways? It's just like all these grown women trying to look as much like little girls as possible; it's all pretty disgusting if you ask me.
In olden days it was an absolute shame for a man to be beardless or to have his beard shaven. Grown men without a beard were looked at like grown men in dresses are now!
