Ball Don't Lie - NBA

The man on the right is Rodney Carney, he's about to enter his third year in the NBA after being selected in the middle of the first round by the Chicago Bulls in 2006, before being shipped to the Philadelphia 76ers. He's not a good player, but he's worth a roster spot on an NBA team. Rodney's a horrible rebounder, a solid mid-range shooter with some defensive skills, and he's already 24 so there's not a whole lot left to uncover.

And he might end up putting Elton Brand in a Philadelphia 76er uniform, or Josh Smith, or he might end up crippling the Atlanta Hawks' ability to re-sign the team's litany of young talent. Or, he might not make a lick of difference.

Adrian Wojnarowski is reporting that the 76ers have already decided to trade Carney to the Minnesota Timberwolves with Calvin Booth (who, in a real shocker, recently picked up his own option to get paid to play basketball) and a future first round pick (the Sixers have heaps of them) for Minnesota's 2.8 million dollar trade exception.

The Timberwolves have a few more months to use the thing, and though I'm surprised that Rodney Carney and a pick was the best they could get, I did just remember the whole "Kevin McHale runs things"-bit. The Sixers, on the other hand, want to pay Minnesota a draft pick to take Carney and Booth of their hands so that the team has a few more million to throw at a potential free agent.

Which brings us back to Brand, while considering that he has been awfully quiet and pretty patient since the Golden State Warriors offered him a big contract that most assumed would inspire EB to say "thanks, but no thanks" to within a day or two. If Brand passes on Philly for either the Warriors or the Clippers, the Sixers could then (assuming they don't start with Smith first) turn their attention to restricted Hawk free agent Josh Smith, offering him in excess of 14 million dollars as a first year starting salary and forcing Atlanta to pass on matching due to the front-loaded offer and the team's own financial issues.

And here's where everyone needs to take a deep breath. 14 million for Josh Smith? Throwing the bank at Elton Brand, paying him until he's 34? And all this because Philadelphia ... can?

Since trading Allen Iverson, the 76ers have had such an odd makeup, and it's hard to tell just what distinct direction they plan on heading in. Philadelphia GM Ed Stefanski has been hell-bent on clearing cap space since taking over last winter, but he also clung onto prime trading piece Andre Miller all season. Miller's a fine point man who was big in helping Philly get to the playoffs, but he's 32, and dumping him on Miami for Jason Williams or for some other expiring contract could have landed Philly even more cap space.

If Stefanski is thinking that good point guards are hard to get, he's right. But Miller is also past his prime, due for a new contract after 2008-09, and he would clearly represent the yin (along with someone like Brand) to Philly's yang. The "yang" being the fact that this is an alternately a very young team with some top-heavy, older talent. It's a weird makeup that, even with Brand or Smith on board, and one that wouldn't seem to be worth more than a first round exit.

And, with Brand or Smith on board, the team would be boasting four guys (assuming Andre Iguodala stays) making about eight figures a year next season. And look at that roster. It shouldn't really have the Celtics, Heat, Cavs, or Bulls shaking.

There's a reason I bring up the Heat and Bulls. They have potential. They have a series of players who are all around the same age, and the standouts that aren't (Shawn Marion, Kirk Hinrich, Andres Nocioni) are all on the trade block. Philly has some nice talent, an inspiring coach, while Brand and Smith are quite good, is that worth the price tag?

Go after Smith. Create interest among the sports talk radio bunch by going after Brand. Just understand that recent big splashes like this (Chicago signing Ben Wallace, Orlando paying Rashard Lewis - the team's third-best player - 75 million over the next four seasons) haven't exactly worked out. There's no shame in chopping that cap space up, or seeing if you can trade for a series of players for draft considerations or Willie Green in what would be a cap legal move with all that space.

Just be careful. Because a team with Smith, Sam Dalembert, Iguodala, Miller, and a host of young players sounds great (if not 55-win worthy) and would be fun to watch, but paying nearly 70 million dollars for that lot next season before having to extend all the rookie contracts for Louis Williams, Thaddeus Young, Jason Smith, Marreese Speights, et al doesn't seem nearly as appealing.

    ridiculous.
brand should go with the sixers and i'm saying that as a warriors fan. honestly, there's not a very pressing need to show up the clips for "gaffing" baron from us and retaliation should not even come up in the decision. on the other hand, of the two, i'd rather have smith over brand. he's younger, more explosive and has, in my mind, a brighter future... plus he's a far better defender.
brand will fit in nicely with the sixers and they could make some serious noise next year with him on the squad. dont forget what the sixers looked like in the 2nd half of the season.
as for the clips, you deserve it. i want to see brand leave because i think baron davis needs a real gutcheck about the importance of team. he was on a team where he had become an integral part of what they do and was their go-to guy... and while not their leader (captain jack led the outfit) he was certainly somebody they turned to. and he left them and the entire city of oakland high and dry.
i can't wait to see the clips remain as miserable as they were last year (if not more so considering that brand will be gone and so will maggette) and davis wonder what truly was more important... success on the court or in hollywood.

KD, I'm not letting you get away without an explanation on last week's post - you're a Chicagoan, how come you're a Cards fan? Unacceptable!

NSS -- the family on my Dad's side, going back to the 1920s, are Cards fans. The first Dwyer to get into baseball lived in St. Louis for a spell, and the rest of us just followed suit.
It was weird, but it wasn't the hardest thing being a Cards fan growing up in the 1980s, especially when you're faced with a choice of either Willie McGee or Vance Law.

Andre miller was probably the best player on the sixers last year. He will have a dip in production, but solid pgs are hard to find.

i agree wit warriors fan down der..i never really thought about it like dat..i think we are better off signing smith than brand coz he has what like 3-4 years and with injury takin up his career it wouldn't b a smart move for mullin to give him a conract that big..and plus he can't run with the fast break offense dat warriors have..i'm just hopin dat after all this..bedriens and ellis stays coz while not everone is tolkin about em dey might b the most valuable free agents coz der both so young..so giv ups to warriors watever they do dis month..im a warrior fan no matter wat baby..

Wow Ron, that was really obnoxious...
Unfortunately Brand will stay in LA, the Warriors will end up going for Maggette and we will miss the playoffs again...
Sign Monta and Beidrins, wait for free agents next year. I hope Mullin doesnt spend money just to spend it on the likes of Corey Maggette.
Josh Smith is a true up and coming talent, but I dont think he is worth 14-16 million per year yet. I guess we will find out the answers to all these questions tomorrow

Sixers cant save the money for 09 freeagents. The way their salary structure is, they have to spend this year or lose any FA money available in the next couple coming years..

Brand would just send the 6ers back to the stone age. They like like to run, Elton, on his bad foot, wont. They won games last year by running and if Elton doesnt/cant run, then thats just a big waste of money. Josh Smith, on the other hand, would have no problem running all day and helping the team in just about every catagory, and he can play in the post. I say, forget about Brand, go after Smith, if they dont get him, wait until next years UFAs or RFAs and go after someone then. They cant "settle" for a good player like Brand, they need to get "thier guy" in order to be competitive for a title.

Why not bully up for Brand? All of the other East "contenders" are either long in the tooth, an odd mix of vets and youth or potentially facing roster chaos. What does Philly have to lose?

Well, I think that most people would agree that Elton Brand is one of the greatest power forwards to ever play the game; that said, he obviously would be a fine fit in Philly who is in desperate need of a post scorer. The idea of the double fly-swatters in Josh Smith and Sammy Dalembert also appeals to me as a 76er fan, so either way, it's cool as kool-aid with me.

To lose? A lot of money in 2012-13.
And Brand's still underrated. And he'll be awesome next year, on any team (the Warriors might be a stretch). I just hope Ed Snyder knows that Stefanski can't stop spending after this, that the roster isn't set.

#3.... It's Don Nelsons' fault that Baron Davis left Golden State. Benching him for the whole second half of an important game down the stretch with the playoffs on the line. He was the star of the team and Nelson benched him just because he had a bad first half. The blame goes on the head coach

#20 that is ridiculous. you can't blame the coach for the player leaving. i was in total disagreement with nellie's decision and so was just about everybody else. nellie is known for being an immature hothead at times... we're not doubting that.
but to leave the city hangin like that? that wasn't oakland's fault. it wasn't monta or stephen's faults. baron went about it all wrong.
doesn;t' matter. it looks more and more like brand is going to philly, we're getting maggette and probably are gonna make a run for smith too and draft a natural point gaurd next year after giving monta a shot at it.

I just have to point out that this is a very poorly written article. In an attempt to wordsmith Kelly Dwyer has done a pretty good job at creating some uneven and even confusing sentences. I'm not sure why Kelly has been given a job at writing but I'm pretty sure he must be someone's nephew.
As for the content- Who cares?

Wojnarowski doesn't know where he's getting these sources from....this is the same dude that said that the owner of the Grizzlies didnt agree to send Pau to the Lakers, but in fact, he made the final decision. Even the Grizzlies owner says this guy doesn't know the difference between fact or fiction. I stopped reading his articles because I know they are all bogus. I suggest you do the same.

too much money for brand or smith. . .brand is past his prime and his numbers are dropping (not to mention he missed almost all of last season). . .why clear cap space (including dumping AI) for him?. . .Smith is a much better option (being only 22) but still not worth that much money. . .just because the money is available doesn't mean you spend it. . .save up for someone with actual talent

I think that Kevin McHale must be thinking in his deal with the sixer's that he not only are they grabbing a first round future pick, but if everything works out the way he would like it, Brand, a strong inside post player who could help any western conference team make a run at the playoffs will no longer be in the western conference, making it a much easier road for the T-wolves and other teams like the trailblazer's make a run at the playoffs. Granted the T-wolves won't be in the playoffs any time soon.

NEITHER brands getting older and injury prone thats only gonna make the sixers "old" talent even older and smith is not a shooter wich the sixers desperately needed in the playoffs. use it for a trade or two that would bring a scorer like ben gordon to philly while also getting diop from the nets and horry from the spurs that should make a better roster. Plus the one player thing will probally end up like the orlando and lewis or chcago and walllace deals. ..definently sending the franchise in the wrong direction
