Ball Don't Lie - NBA

It's never been your forte — taking photos — but holy cow, Popeye, that is not a good look, man. Nick Nolte is embarrassed.

Popeye Jones, a veteran of 11 NBA seasons who's now an assistant coach with the Dallas Mavericks, was arrested Sunday in Richardson, TX and accused of drunk driving. According to The Dallas Morning News, the Richardson Police Department received calls from other motorists complaining that someone driving a GMC Yukon was driving erratically.

The cops say Jones declined a breathalyzer test, but it is believed Jones was intoxicated. There was a "minor struggle" when police tried to arrest him and Jones was "taken to the ground," causing "minor" facial cuts.

(Note: I use quotations because, outside of Popeye and the cops on scene, no one actually knows what happened. Did Popeye resist arrest? Or did the police use excessive force to bring the six-foot-eight ex-power forward down? FanHouse reports that the arresting officers had an in-car dashboard camera, so I'm sure we'll find out soon enough.)

In the meantime, Mavericks' owner Mark Cuban declined to comment on the arrest, instead opting to ask the Dallas Morning News via email: "Why do you care? Do you report on every DWI that occurs in Dallas?"

Is that a zing? I think that was a zing.

Cuban needs to be quiet and focus on HDNet. They have that stupid JAG show on there that sucks. Art Mann show is good and the InFocus, but beyond those two everything else needs work.

Resisting arrest my a_ss! That's a beatdown right there. Knot on forehead, busted lip, road rash on face, cut on nose. That's just from the mugshot.
A DWI of an assistant coach wouldn't even make press, but this is newsworthy due to the beatdown.

Let's just hope that this is as the police say. If not we may be in for trouble. The last person I saw who was beat down this badly by police was Rodney King. Hopefully, the camera clearly shows him resisting arrest. He appears to be cold sober. His eyes are clear and doesn't appear to be impaired at all. I've been waiting for the video to surface. If it's like the Rodney King video; Dallas Police, please drop these charges and don't show the video. We don't need any nonsense happening because of this.

All kidding aside, that's a mug you get from a beat-down, not a fall-down. It'll be interesting to see what the video shows.

As for the beat down the camera should tell but one thing seems clear. If the man was driving erratically enough for someone to call the cops, he wasn't "stone sober," however he might look possibly hours later in a photograph. And if he was a lethal threat to others on the road, he needed to be stopped somehow. I hope there was sufficient reason for this police response but you never know.

    Man, this sucks.
Popeye went to college in my home town, my own alma mater. I looked up to him a lot and thought it was really cool that someone could go from Murray to the NBA (I think Popeye might have more to do with co-Murray-alum James SIngleton's re-signing with the forward-stacked Mavs than I've read in any blogs.)
I've always heard of him as being a really genial, approachable guy, and never thought he was one of "those" athletes that you'd see in a DWI report. I've been told that as a toddler I once saw Popeye before a game and asked him why his ears were so big. He just smiled and made a joke.
I'm just kind of sad. Hopefully he'll get through this and continue working with the Mavs to make great basketball happen.

Wow looks like he got into a brawl than just getting a DWI. For a second there I thought he got into a car wreck, but to get your face smash into the ground by the cops is absurd. Popeye is about 6'8' so it must have taken a few cops to put him to the ground. I hope what they did was legitimate or we probably won't hear the last of this.

There are more things in life that should be making the news..muders,rapes abductions. He is one person who made the news due to being a NBA player. Mark Cuban is right focus on something else and maybe we will be more aware of escape convicts...
