Ball Don't Lie - NBA

Lang Whitaker of SLAM was in Barcelona this past week — tough gig, eh? — to take in a Euroleague game between DKV Joventut and Lottomatica Roma — AKA "The Ricky Rubio vs. Brandon Jennings, Round One Showdown." Thankfully for Thunder and Clipper fans, Lang took notes. Here are a few favorite parts:

• It’s immediately obvious that Brandon Jennings belongs out there with all these guys. He’s just as big, just as quick and can out-jump most of the guys on the floor.

• Just when it looks like the game might be over, Brandon picks up a loose ball around the three point line, jumps into the air and busts a reverse 360 spin, then, before landing, zips a pass under the rim to Hudson for an and-one. If ESPN really was the Worldwide Leader in Sports, that play would’ve made tonight’s top ten on "SportsCenter."

• To me, the two most talented players on the court — hands down — were Brandon and Ricky. Ricky was Ricky, playing his game full of intangibles and moxie, even though he was essentially playing with one hand. I don’t think he even took a shot, but he finished with his normal complement of assists and rebounds and steals.

• While I initially thought Brandon going to Europe might be a bad idea, he’s found a team that’s giving him playing time and letting him learn on the fly. If he’d gotten into a US college or gone to a junior college, he’d probably be allowed to shoot as much as he wants, go up against zone defenses, have a coach catering to him and not be expected to defend the opposing team’s best guards. But now he’s getting a one year crash course in defending pick-and-rolls, handling the travel and the attention, keeping his teammates and coaches happy — basically, what it’s going to be like for him next year in the NBA.

• If you could combine Brandon’s offense and Ricky’s defense, you’d have the no-doubt consensus number one draft choice in 2009. Even with their respective strengths and weaknesses, as it stands now I’d take either one of them in the lottery.

Thx 4 the notes on the game, but I'd still say that physically Brandon is a lot more developed then Rubio. Even with that difference, there's this saying my old coach used to say often: "Defense is willpower, offense is skill." Oh and 1st :D

Here's to hoping Rubio's stock falls because of the wrist and the Kings land him. If they don't, I plan on moving to whatever NBA city does.

Gimme a break.....i live in europe....i watch as much euroleague and nba as possible.....RUBIO played 8 minutes in this game....he had 5 assists, which is amazing, but he also had 3 turnovers....the kid is nothing but a hype.....the only similarities with pistol pete is that he physically looks like pete marav would as a 18 year old.....other than that forget it....Brandon Jennings is very good......the only thing that can ruin his chances in the nba is his ego ala marbury steve francis

I don't see Rubio becoming anything special in the NBA. Probably just a solid backup PG on some bad team.

BJ Is A Solid PG. Ricky Can be More Compared To A Stockton/J Will. Both Will Be Respectable Starters In The League But Brandon Has The Upside In His Awesome Potential To Score.

Not sure I understand the comparisons to Pistol Pete, aside from the physical resemblance. Maravich averaged 24 ppg for his NBA career--it's obviously a little early to tell, but I doubt Rubio ever averages that much in a single season in the NBA.

with all those zZz's i'm sure thats how i'll feel when rubio crumbles in the NBA. But I "reKognize" or rather acknowledge that he just might become a decent guard IF he learns to play tough defense not just roaming and picking off passes.
