Ball Don't Lie - NBA

Funny quote via Mike Ganter of the Toronto Sun:

When you've lost seven games in a row, respect is tough to find. But Raptors shooting guard Jason Kapono is getting some.

The NBA Players Poll in this week's issue of Sports Illustrated asked those polled "Who is the best pure shooter you've ever seen?"

Boston's Ray Allen was the clear-cut No. 1 choice with 26% followed by former Indiana Pacer Reggie Miller with 15%. Kapono and former Celtics great Larry Bird were tied for third with 10% of the votes.

Kapono's reaction to the voting was typical Kapono.

"I think that's a disgrace to Larry Bird," Kapono said, "and I think he'd be appalled to hear that. Please let Larry Bird know I had nothing to do with this."

Fine. I'll call him.

And just in case you were wondering, your 1990 NBA 3-Point Shooting Contestants above were ...

Standing (left-to-right): Reggie Miller, Jon Sundvold, Mark Price and Craig Hodges. Seated (left-to-right): "Larry Kapono," Bobby Hansen, Craig Ehlo and ... um ... um ... I'm drawing a blank.

Ray Allen has a beautiful stroke. No question. But all-time? As simply a pure shooter, I think both Dale Ellis and Glenn Rice had better form and a softer touch than Allen. And I've never seen anyone with Tracy Murray range--who was like the poor man's Reggie.

Oh, yeah, that was the year MJ decided he was a three-point shooter. Kinda like what LeBron's doing this year with his defense.
Also, there's why too much upper-inner thigh in that pic.

I lost several cents to David Kruger betting on MJ that afternoon.
Also, David Hansen? I can see you wedding vegetables. That's OK. Game 6, in 1992 was worth it. Fair trade.

That would be "Bobby" Hansen, and I think I'm not allowed to root for the Bulls any more.

Skeets, did you know who Sundvold was on first sight, or did you just look it up? But many kudos to you either way.

I agree with #9. Those jerseys should never be retroed. But those man-thongs should surely be brought back. Players' shorts are too baggy these days. Plus, it'll help them do better crossovers.

I would have never gotten Sundvold. I got Hanson because I am a jazz fan but I don't remember him being in the 3 point contest.
But even if Larry does have a sweat shot, why not even the playing field and make him take off his warm ups, too?

Had to be tough for Ehlo to sit next to Jordan after he nailed 'The Shot' in Game 5 of the 89' playoffs the year before. Hodges started his three year reign in the 3-pt shootout that year, too...

When the lakers did the short shorts thing last year, they did it all wrong. The tops were too loose. The whole uniform has to be retro. These look sweet though. Ehlo looks a little self conscious about his package. Then again it's tough being in Jordan's shadow.

I wonder how many times the photographer had to stop for Ehlo to pick himself back off the ground and get back in his chair next to MJ?

What about Sam Perkins people? He wasn't called the "Big Smooth" for nothing, that stroke was pure. And I also agree with #2 about Dale Ellis, man could shoot the rock, and lets not forget about Thunder Dan Majerle or Dell Curry.

Yo! when my eyes first locked on to that picture, i had no idea that it was the All Star 3 Point shooting contestants, i almost thought it was the actual Eastern Conference team, till i read the article and saw Hansen in the Utah jersey.
But anyways, have you people forgot about Dennis Scott? that guy could shoot lights out, he was like automatic!
i also agree with Kapono though, being in the same tier as Larry Legend? ...dam! i bet at first Jason was like..oooohhhhh snap! and got a huge boner from it.

You've got to like and respect Kapono....
I think that is a cool attitude to take. It is nice to see a good player and great shooter like Kapono show repsect to one of the NBA's GREAT Ones....
