Ball Don't Lie - NBA

Eventually, Phil Jackson has come to understand the inevitable truth: The Lakers are never trading Kobe Bryant.

So yes, this made it easier to nod at the two year, $24 million extension that's been waiting on him. Yes, Andrew Bynum is threatening to fulfill his promise, but Bryant allows Jackson to stay in the fray. No, he isn't passing Red Auerbach for a 10th championship, but Jackson never insisted that championship contention was necessary to stay coaching these Lakers.

Before leaving for training camp, Jackson said, "If we're not going to challenge, I don't want to be a guy that's coaching this team on the kind of salary I'm getting."

For the Lakers, there is an immense relief. As long as Bryant stays, he must have Jackson as his coach. Who else can command Kobe's respect? Who else can buffer Bryant and the Busses? What's more, he's a star for Hollywood. Jack Nicholson can't look down the sideline and see, say, Sam Vincent.

No one should kid themselves, though. Jackson was searching for reasons to stay, not go. Even with his hip replacement, he still loves the rhythms of NBA life. Most of all, he is the highest paid coach in pro sports at $10 million a season. Now, he gets a raise to $12 million. No one walks out on that.

Maybe Bryant goes in 2009 as a free agent, and, contract or not, rest assured Jackson walks out the door with him. For months, turmoil had taken over these Lakers, but no more. The demise of the Bulls costs them Bryant as a championship-fit destination. Bynum, the 7-footer, is beginning to realize his potential. There are young players, Jordan Farmar and Luke Walton, growing into reputable pros.

The Lakers are legitimized again. This doesn't make them championship contenders, but once again, it makes them worthy of the game's best coach. Phil Jackson wants to coach here, and Los Angeles takes a long sigh. The star stays on the sidelines.

C'mon, Jackson cannot coach his way out of a paper bag. 12 million for his INability to inspire the millionaire babies that play for him. Now I know why the Lakers passed on Garnett, they had to save their money for super dope. Pass up on the premiere player in the league fpr a washed up burnt out coach??????? Bring back Jerry West, bring back some sanity!!!

Jackson is one of best coaches in the NBA, not only because he has a unique fundamental knowledge of the game, but he can somehow work with certain 'difficult' NBA players. Also, he deserves to get paid a lot of money because even with all the stuff happening with Bryant, he has managed to improve other players such as Famar and Bynum. It's tough being a coach!

No player is worth what Phil is getting... such is show business. It's just all too bad with the hostages Kobe has imprisoned isn't it? Phil could probably help some lost young NBA team if it wasn't for this, and build a contender. If Kobe would get team mates involved, you never know, this team is actually good without a ball hog and his distractions and antics. They, as a team, could get somewhere.

Phil Jackson is probaly hands down the best coach in the NBA with all the championships he won with Chicago and LA,but without a supporting cast he is just s slobb at coaching youg players or players that cant play the game. Well I believe that JACKSON should of retired when he lost to Detriot in the NBA FINALS he had all the players and they still lost that was the downhill slide of the La Lakers and their now just an average NBA team trying to find some spark and keep Jackson from having another bad year.

Next time they should both go to Jerry Buss and get the same deal he gave to Magic Johnson; with a couple of deals like that, Bryant and Jackson will be owners of their own 10% too.

All of you don't realize what Jackson can bring to a team. Not only does he have the people skills to work with @ssholes like Jerry Buss but he can make a crybaby, ballhog, premadonna like Kobe play good with others. Don't forget he did it with Jordan and Pippen and the rest of the Bulls , and might i add he did it six times. Lets not even get into the triangle offense, whom many have tried to copy but were unsuccessful. Jackson has a way of making crap smell like roses. Will he win another championship in L.A. no because jerry buss is an idiot and won't keep players long enough to get them to work as a cohesive unit and the bad part is i'm not even a Lakers fan!!!!!!!!!!!!
Don't fault Jackson for the mistakes Buss and others make Jackson is one of the best coaches in the game today.

What the haters are ignorant of is the Triangle system offense that Jackson coaches. Jordan prospered under it, and so does Kobe. That is why this team will be successful. These players fit into the triangle well. Let me give you (I know it is extreme) a comparison:
    Farmar-Harper Vujacic-Kerr
    Kobe-Jordan
    Odom-Pippen
    Turiaf/Radmonovic- Rodman/Kukoc
Bynum- well, he's the future guy, no comparison to a center because he is already better than Longley
