Ball Don't Lie - NBA

Well, if you trust The Hilton Hotel's somewhat erratic 'Get Your Chinese Name' machine, LeBron James and Kobe Bryant translate to "Jiang Liu Boa" and "Bei Kuang Bang," respectively. Faithful Ball Don't Lie reader Jim depicts them like so:

While I dig the "LeBron as a wide willow" visual, and Kobe's "bang," um, works, I still prefer both of their Chinese nicknames — Xiao Huang Di (Little Emperor) for LBJ, and Xiao Fei Xia (Little Flying Warrior) for Kobe. Those are cool.

In related news, Mr. Jiang Liu Boa sure looks healthy on that tweaked ankle. The King finished with a team-high 20 points on 8-of-9 shooting in USA's 114-82 exhibition win over Turkey this morning.

digg delicious

I kind of get LeBron but I don't get how Kobe was translated at all... but sure... if you say so Skeets. I personally don't trust Hilton when it comes to Chinese though.

The Chinese "translations" really don't mean anything. They're simply phonetic pronunciations of their names done in Chinese, and remember, last names go first in Chinese. Therefore, Lebron James becomes "Liu Bo Jiang", and Kobe Bryant becomes, "Kuang Bang Bei". It's not perfect, but you can sort of get the idea of who they are in a basketball context.

bfk 4 life, if being the best player was based on stats then Jordan wouldn't be considered the best player ever. Check your history and just look at the stats of someone like Elgin Baylor, Wilt Chamberlain, Jerry West, Clyde Drexler had great all around stats, you can't just say look at Labron stats and say he's better than Kobe. Why do you think every year before the season starts and all th GM's are asked if they needed someone at the end of a game takin a shot who would it be, for the pass 4-5 years they all say Kobe you know why, because he's money, all the players in the league think so as well so its not all about stats, stats can be interpeted anyway you want them.

I think Lebron is handsdown a better all around player than Kobe. It's not all about stats but on stats, Lebron beats Kobe in virtually every significant category: points, reobunds, assists, overall shooting percentage. He trails slightly or ties in the other categories. He beat Kobe in these areas despite having a far less capable supporting cast, which meant he had to play all out without as many breathers as Kobe.
Now that we see them together on the same team against the same competition, we will see how they stack up against one another, not just in stats but in leadership of the team. So far, it's Lebron hands down.
