I'm usually loathe to get all sappy on you, so you'll have to understand when I tell you that I'm going to pick my spots when I abandon my usual "droll" and "dyspeptic" for "maudlin" and "cloying."

We're saying goodbye to 2007 tonight, our Aussie friends have already ushered in 2008, and there's no better time to tell the people that mean the most to you exactly what you think of them. Whether your beverage of choice is water or whiskey or some deliriously wonderful combination of both, you're bound to get a little too candid with your close ones tonight, tell them some things you may feel a little nervous or embarrassed about the day after, and that's ... alright.

Read this column about Scot Pollard. Understand that people we can't imagine living without can be taken from us in a moment's time. Talk to those people tonight, if you can. You might feel uneasy, and you might get called a cornball, but you've probably been called far worse, and the payoff is so, so worth it.
