Guest post: Are the 6-1 Suns for real?

Special guest post today from Ben York, writer at Deep Purple and SLAM, on the Suns' blazing hot start ...

I'll be the first to admit I wasn't all that excited for the Suns '09/10 campaign; not because I didn't think they could win a lot of games or make some noise in the West, but because of the sheer up-and-down drama of the past five years that saturated every game, every practice, every play. I was done. I had had enough. Mind you, I've been a die-hard for a couple decades now, and this was the first start to a season where seemingly all the passion and enthusiasm was missing.

Now, I won't go into a brief history of the 2004-2009 Suns. You know the story. They brought a unique and fun aspect to the NBA again and then, essentially, recanted their beliefs and successes and brought in Shaquille O'Neal(notes). Obviously, it didn't turn out like Suns fans (or NBA fans) wanted it to. The organization and fans moved on, shed some salary, re-signed a couple of thirty-somethings and went back to Mike D'Antoni-like basketball.

And it's working.

I'm not going to sit here and say that I predicted the Suns to start 6-1. Or that they would go into Miami and win. And then Boston. And then Washington. In fact, I remember looking at the schedule, seeing this brutal five-games-in-seven-nights road trip to start the season, then quickly curling up in the fetal position and crying for a good two hours.

I'm as surprised as all of you are.

But, the exciting and encouraging thing isn't that the Suns went back to the run-and-gun (they really aren't close to what they were in 2004-2007), it's that they are playing hard, gritty, tough basketball. Descriptors like that certainly haven't been used to describe the Suns in the past five years, even with Shaq. They've had the "soft" label, and rightfully so. This season, however, they've shown glimpses of hustle and fortitude that should encourage any Suns fan. The way Jared Dudley(notes) brings intensity and intangibles, the way Goran Dragic's(notes) confidence has soared, the way Channing Flipping Frye is shooting the ball, the energy that Lou Amundson brings; all while being undersized and under appreciated.

I've been hard on Amar'e Stoudemire(notes) in the past, but I've been incredibly impressed with his play thus far as he is already making a strong case to get a max deal. He still has a way to go in terms of getting his explosiveness back, but he's (finally) making a conscious effort on the defensive end and playing smart basketball. He isn't close to where he could be defensively, but his awareness has undeniably increased. It matters not what his motivation for this is (money, wins, recognition, etc.), just that it's happening; quite simply, he's becoming a bona fide leader for the Suns. The television has even picked up some of what he says on the defensive end of the floor, which signifies that he's actually communicating with teammates on defense — a fantastic sign. Granted, I've heard him yell "Rebound!" several times to other teammates as he's standing in the lane somewhat aimlessly ... but at this point I'll take anything.

However, as always, the success of this team will ride on Steve Nash's(notes) shoulders — and he's fine with that. There is still a lot of talk about his age and how he's lost a step, but the way he keeps himself conditioned doesn't fit the mold of a typical 35-year-old. Sure, he's played a lot of minutes and a lot of games in the NBA, but he continues to display an innate ability to dominate and take over games at a moment's notice. He's averaging 18 points and 12 assists per game this season on 51% FG shooting and 51.5% 3PT FG shooting. Those numbers best any season he's had in a Suns uniform.

Perhaps what's most appealing is how hard this team is playing — something that was missing last year. Alvin Gentry has instilled a belief in this team that if they are going to win, they're going to need to play their butts off — and it's showing. There is a clear effort to box out opponents on a consistent basis, gang-rebound and help out on the weak side. Don't look now, but the Suns are right in the middle of the pack defensively; opposing team's offensive rebounds have declined, teams aren't shooting as high a percentage as they have against the Suns in the past, and Phoenix is actually 10th in the league in average rebounds per game. These principles may seem elementary to some, perhaps not warranting even being written about, but they're unquestionably what has doomed the Suns in previous years.

Yes, I know how early in the season it is. I know how quickly things can go wrong. I know that health will be a question mark as the season progresses. But, my goodness, one can't help but be impressed with not only their six wins thus far, but how they've got them.

The Suns are for real.

well written post. Orlando crushed the Suns w/o Vince Carter and w/o Rashard Lewis by 22 points. forgot to mention that. It looked to me like the Suns gave up in that game.

You say that Amare has a long way to go getting his explosiveness back. It's been a couple years, right? What if it isn't coming back?

And he also averaged more points in 05-6 (18.8 ppg) and 06-07 (18.6 ppg) than he does now (17.9 ppg). Your exaggerations have made this post less effective, and thus not good.

#6 silly comment, his stats right now, after only 7 games so who cares, are better than in any other year and they are. he never shot at such a high percentage with 18 and 12 on the board. Come on, his stats have never been better. Over 50% from 3 and 50% from the field with 12 assists...wow. MVP, haha.

What is "Mike D'Antoni-like basketball"? Fill up your standings with a lot of wins over the league's smaller teams and then not able to sustain a best-of-seven series grind against the bigger ones? Sure, I gotta admit that their type of basketball is waaaay more fun to watch. But at the end of the day, it's the big, slow and boring teams that make it to he end. To win a game against the Celtics and then move on to play against the Wizards is not the same as winning a game against the Celtics and having to play them again the following night.

Not to say the suns are near as good as orlando, but without barbosa and playing the second of back to backs on the road makes Hill and nash really show their old age. Old teams just dont play very well in the second of back to backs, especially in the middle of a 7 games in 10 days stretch. This is why I suspect Gentry sat those guys down after 22mins or less, they were gassed. Orlando is a very good, young, and DEEP team. They should be one of the best teams in the NBA in the second of back to backs. And if ryan anderson can get 20/10 in 26 minutes, they dont need rashard lewis. As for VC, JRich scored 0 points on 0-4, sounds like he was missing in that game too. JRich is just getting back into things, hopefully the suns have figured out how to use his skills(34pts against the celtics). I look forward to seeing more of orlando, and of the suns.

Czhecks' comment has to be the best, he comments on a post about a team he doesn't like, which makes me wonder why he even read this in the 1st place. Not only does he do that but he also started bashing Skeets, who didn't even write this post, I guess Czheck just falls under the category of "douche". Besides that, this Suns team is for real, they may not be playing as fast as they used to but the reason is because they are more committed on the boards, Suns teams in the past years would think about the fast break before they got the rebound. Things have changed, this years Suns is like the teams of the past with an added toughness and hustle, they can play fast, or they can slow it down. In the first 5 games, 5 different players lead the team in scoring, talk about "pick your poison", but not only that, everyone from Steve Nash down to Lou Amundson wants to win. Just like Ben York said "The Suns are for real".

well written. the suns are definitely a team to watch as the seasons progresses, they are a surprise team. the shaq expirement did not work, to down shaq does not make sense, ok he was not a good fit in phx. Orlando, Miami, and Boston are all quality teams should be in the mix in the end. this quick start for the suns on the road against high caliber teams sends the message that you better bring your "A" game when the suns come calling. The Lakers out west are definitely an elite team and command respect. having been a fan of the suns since paul westfall, alvin adams and garr heard played for the suns, the battles between the suns and lakers with jerry west thru magic johnsonand kareem have always been fun to watch and this looks to be just as entertaining with the what looks to be a much improved suns team.

The 1st seven games means nothing, we will take another look at the all star break, that will tell us a lot more. Its a waste to even talk about who is the best teams. Its just too early. Some of these teams that started hot, wont even make the playoffs, We have seen this many times before. Coachs are moving people in and out of the lineup, there are injurys, to many factors right now to make an kind of accessment.

Steve Nash is one of the best point guards to ever play the game, and at 35 he is still playing at a top level, so much for older players cant play anymore. Most of the top players are over 35.

    Czhech,
Clearly you were readying some other blog and confused it with this blog. Skeets never indicated that the Suns would sweep the Celtics, nor did he indicate with what record the Suns and Lakers would finish the season.
All Skeet pointed out is that Phoenix, despite a tough road schedule has had a good start to the season. That's it.
So what blog were you reading, because it wasn't Skeet.
Seems to me that you are the one smoking all the crack. Don't be such a hog, save some for the rest of us
