Ball Don't Lie - NBA

Los Angeles Lakers at Utah Jazz, Game 3

The idea that Derek Fisher might be booed in his playoff return to Salt Lake City tonight has been bandied about for so long that Jazz fans, likely enervated, just won't be up for it. Or, they were embarrassed by their shocking turn earlier this year in Fisher's presence, and learned from it. You can probably tell which way I'm leaning.

But just in case there are some hopeless mugs with internet access who are relishing a chance to boo the man, let me go over a few reasons why, exactly, you are a hopeless mug.

(And, as it nearly always is, I'm dealing on strictly basketball terms. Personal issues, however significant, are being pushed to the side here.)

You have to start with the fact that Derek Fisher did the Jazz a huge, huge favor.

The guy is 33, the contract that he agreed to dissolve would have paid him until he was nearly 36, and 6-1 guards with streaky jump shots who spend the bulk of their early 30s playing average-to-below average basketball don't exactly age well.

That likely wouldn't have stopped Jazz coach Jerry Sloan, however, from handing the starting spot to Derek Fisher this year, and possibly the next; even with Ronnie Brewer improving. Jazz fans are kidding themselves if they think that Sloan goes for the up-and-comer for big minutes over younger talent, and if they need any further wakeup calls, I'll kindly shout the names of Matt Harpring and Calbert Cheaney in their direction.

Sloan just favors the comfortable and hustling over youth, and unless the youngster's name is Shandon Anderson (good call) or Quincy Lewis (why, Jerry, why?), he's due to come off the bench with three minutes to go in the first quarter.

Better yet, Fisher's waiving took a good 22 million in cash spread out over three years off Utah's cap. That didn't clear any space, but it allowed a team in a small market some flexibility under the luxury tax, and the chance to take on Kyle Korver's contract.

Korver is twice the shooter Fisher is, even with Fisher shooting 40 percent from behind the arc this year. Derek is the epitome of a streak shooter, and in his final season playing in Los Angeles (in the same offense, mind you, so let's not get into the idea of "comfort zones" or anything like that), he shot 29 percent. He's up, and he's down. He's great, a huge reason Los Angeles is playing so well this year, but he's up and down.

Korver is always up. And with Fisher on the books and in the rotation, the Jazz would have never traded for him, because it would have meant a luxury tax hit once the team had to bear down and re-sign Deron Williams this summer and Paul Millsap the next.

So, even though the Jazz made the Conference finals last year, let's review: Williams, Fisher, and Ronnie Brewer in the backcourt? Or Williams, Brewer, and Kyle Korver in the backcourt - with the superior Brewer playing more minutes? Which do you prefer? And you want to boo this guy?

Again, I appreciate Fisher quite a bit. Anytime any cable TV yammerer goes on about how Kobe Bryant supposedly "learned to trust his teammates," I'm the one yelling about how no person in their right mind should ever trust Smush Parker, and wondering why it is that nobody realizes that Derek Fisher is a significant improvement over what Kobe's had to deal with in years past.

He's perfect for the triangle offense. He's perfect for guarding point men, and not the shooting guards that dominated the Jazz last year (you remember, Jazz fans, you remember). And because he's having a hot shooting year, he's winning games for Los Angeles.

And Utah? He's cleaned up your rotation. He's off your books. He'll allow you to pay Deron Williams what Deron Williams is worth this summer, retain the others, and keep Paul Millsap around. He allowed your GM to trade for superior talents that were a better fit. He did you a favor.

Do us all a favor, whoever's left, and grow up.

I wonder if The Jazz are going to get any quicker, taller, or more athletic now that they're home. If not, expect more of the same.

If you won't go with the personal aspect, then I will:
Anyone who boos someone who wanted to get better care for their 8 month old daughter who has cancer should be tarred and feathered. I've got a 2 month old daughter right now, and there's nothing in this world I wouldn't do to protect her. I can't even imagine what it's like to have a child with cancer.
I'm trying to get into the head of those who thought it would be a good idea to boo Fisher, seriously, what could they have been thinking?
Darius Miles, yeah I see booing him, Vince Carter bailing on Toronto, yeah I see booing him. Booing the Players representative who has been a model player and person since he's been in the league? What is wrong with you? Are you seriously mentally challenged? I think it's been mentioned that Fisher is respected by all the players. They know he's not a phenominal talent, but he's a professional and the players recognize that.
Personally I hope the Jazz themselves were embarrassed for their fans when Derek was booed. Something should have been said at the time it happened. I seriously don't think you can get much lower than booing Derek Fisher.
Here's to hoping the Jazz fans save their energy for throwing panties at Korver tonight.....

As a die hard Lakers fan... I usually don't have much respect for their opponents... the Jazz as a team though deserves respect... they have a great team that's young, talented, hungry and could be battling for championships for years to come.... sorta like the Stockton & Malone era... and they have one of league's best coaches...ever... That said though...if Jazz fans boo Derek tonight.. I hope the Lakers bury them so deep that they never recover... mentally or emotionally!

    KD,
    First-off.
You know 'I love ya, Baby' and what you each and every day here with BDL ... so please don't take what I'm going to say next as an insult toward you ... but,
You're off base with some of your observations once again in this analysis of D-Fish.
    * Agree that Derek is a terific Triangle Offense PG.
    * Agree that Derek is a HUGE upgrade for the LakeShow over Smush.
but you can't say these next three things and hope to get away with them unscathed
    - Fish is the epitome of a streak shooter
    - Korver is twice the shooter Fish is
    - Korver is always up
    - Fish is up and down
    - Fish just happens to be shooting well for an ENTIRE YEAR this season cause he's in the midst of a HOT SHOOTING YEAR
    The problems?
    * You should be comparing Fish to Smush not to Korver.
    * A streak shooter does not stay in a HOT streak for an ENTIRE year.
    * Korver is NOT Always UP ... cause if he were ... the 76ers, who needed a reliable 3Pt Shooter desperately, would never have just GIVEN him away this season.
    * D-Fish is a skilled veteran who generally makes good decisions with the ball and knows how to make timely perimeter shots ... which is much more VALUABLE to a team in the Lakers current situation.
    * Sasha Vujacic is a better shooter (and a better athlete and a better ball-handler) than Kyle Korver ... which is who you should be comparing Korver to not D-Fish.
    * Deron Williams is a better PG than D-Fish ... which is who you should also be comparing D-Fish to, instead of Korver.
    * If D-Will significantly outperforms D-Fish in tonight's Game 3 ... then the Jazz will have a good shot to beat the Lakers and make the series 1-2 ... but if D-Fish can hold his own in that 1on1 match-up, which is really what the NBA Game is all about ... then the Lakers will probably go up 3-0 and this series will be OVER lickadee-split.
I admire what you do and how you do it ... with panache ... but sometimes even the best in the business need some help to reach that MVP level of performance. :-)
    Keep on truck'n, big fella.

I hope the Jazz fans boo the Lakers so Kobe and Co. use that as motivation and play harder like they did in March. Kobe loves to play at a hostile arena and put a dagger on them. I love to see that again..flash your jersey Kobe!

    KD,
You saw how much it bothered Kobe the last time they booed D Fish in SLC. He got the team together and told them this one's personal before their next game there. They went out and dismantled The Jazz without Gasol or Bynum in The Jazz' house. Kobe has a long memory. I expect him and The Lakers to come in with that same mindset tonight. And, I expect similar results will follow. The fans can blame this one on themselves for being such childish idiots.

So tonight's game comes down to whether or not Utah fans boo Fisher?
Wow, what great insight into strategy, match ups and what to expect when we all hunker down to watch this game tonight.
This is hardly more than a short essay on Fisher, not a noteworthy take on the Lakers-Jazz series.

I am waiting for all of those mouthy Zazz fans who were having such a good time bashing the undermanned, injured Rockets. How does it feel to face a team at full strength? Enjoy these next two games- they will be the last for you this season.

And khandor: you completely missed the point of the post. The Jazz are better off without Derek Fisher. It's not about comparing the Jazz and the Lakers. (And FYI Fisher was the Jazz's starting SG last year.)

LA vs Denver was balanced? NO vs Dallas was balanced? SA vs Phoenix was balanced? I don't think so!! Just because all of these were so bunched up in the standings doesn't say anything about balance at playoff time. LA vs Denver was a yawner. NO was exciting only to see Dallas get their butt kicked AGAIN. SA vs Phoenix was just another clinic on how defense wins in the playoffs. The lack of balance in the Eastern Conference you alude to is just a reflection of what happens when teams realize that defense wins games in the playoffs and when playoff experience counts for something. I think it was great for Boston to have to play 7 games. They needed to see how tough they are and how vulnerable they can be. Watching Philly wallop the Pistons was great to see. They are one or two players from really rattling the East. Plus the Pistons needed a reality check about how much they want to get to the finals.

What a freakin' liar. Particularly in light of the fact his daughter's doctor is in New York, and Salt Lake City is a mere hour plane ride away from L.A. Indeed, in the long run, Fisher did the Jazz a major salary cap favor, but Fisher and his wife hated Salt Lake City and the way he went about getting out of town just plain stunk. He talked about taking a leave of absence from basketball, and then three seconds later, he's inked himself with the Lakers. Using his little girl as a pretext to escape a place he and his wife wanted to escape was downright Boozerish, but even a tad more sleazy. I didn't think that was even possible.
