Ball Don't Lie - NBA

Boston at Cleveland

There's nothing else that is really going to come close to this.

Boston's Christmas Day pairing with the Lakers comes compares in a way, but we know what the Lakers are all about. We know the team's offense, we're familiar with the squad's underrated defense, and we know the team's motivation. The outcome of that game was in question, no doubt about that, but you had a good idea entering into that matchup just how things were going to shake out.

With the Cavs ... I've no idea. Cleveland has completely revamped its offense, while sustaining that defensive edge; and the Cavaliers are on their way toward putting together a record-setting season in terms of point differential, which any NBA brainiac from Hubie Brown on down will tell you is the best way of determining who's better, and who's best.

This team is first in offensive efficiency, and first in defensive efficiency. The Bulls did that, once. One time. And that's it. You might not think the Cavs the best team in the league, but anyone who tells you that any team has played better than Cleveland this season just doesn't know what they're on about.

But Cleveland has also had an easier schedule than most, and the team is still working in an offense that hasn't been tested much. When things get tough, will they revert to their old ways? Will they toss the ball to LeBron some 35 feet away from the basket, and ask him to go 1-on-5? Everyone has a strategy until they get hit, and Boston likes to hit, so what happens when the strategy takes a hit?

Cleveland could romp, they could roll over, or we could get a classic. I've no idea. Yes, it's a Friday night, but let's pay attention.

Cleveland Cavaliers: 28-6, 89.7 possessions per game (23rd), 113.1 points scored per 100 possessions (1st), 99.4 points allowed per 100 possessions (1st).

Boston Celtics: 29-8, 91.1 possessions per game (17th), 109.5 points scored per 100 possessions (7th), 99.5 points allowed per 100 possessions (2nd).

I dunno, the opening game was pretty close, and the Cavs have only been going up and Boston is in a little slump. Should be a great game, but I wouldn't be surprised to see the Cavs blow them out. I hope it won't happen, but I wouldn't be surprised.
The other ESPN game might be good, but Dallas is on the road and played a semi-tough game last night.
But really, the Atlanta-Orlando rematch should be your runner up Game To Pay Attention To.

    I'm shocked--shocked!, I say--that you would pass on Bulls-Wizards for this swill.
    (Cough)
I say we get a classic. No way are the Cavaliers rolling over. Lebron is UP for this one. And you know KG is going to be crazy intense.
The wild card here is Rondo. If he turns it over a bunch, like he has of late, Cleveland could turn this into a beat down. Could.

I feel like we should turn the comments off until Andrew shows up for these, because he's proven to be able to see the future. Quite clearly. I bow to you, good Sir.

Did we really need an article to know that the matchup between the two best east teams was a game to pay attention to? Maybe if you didnt have a female name you wouldnt make such female observations about sports.

I am really looking forward to this test for Cleveland. I really believe that we will prevail and finally start to prove that we are here for the long haul.

Pace would mess that up, to an extent, Mike.
And I think the real reason he doesn't address it, and the reason I'm not on board after a first glance at the thought (which does make sense), is that the "formula" (if you can call it that) doesn't really need tweaking. Almost to a season, the teams with the best point differential are the teams that end up winning it.
It doesn't need tweaking or adjusting, because it's proven to be valuable and bankable as is.

    Much obliged.
Here's another prediction, KD - LAL will own the Pacers tonight.
Yeah, my crystal ball is colored purple and gold; how'd you guess?
Oh, and don't forget to watch Denver-Detroit. Forget the AI-Billups nonsense; it should be a pretty good game, especially if 'Sheed and Rip are back. I think the most interesting matchup, actually is Billups-Stuckey. AI is so 2001.
On second thought, that game could be a big blowout, but I can't decide which way. Watch it anyway.

Someone needs to remind the announcers that LeBron went 3-11 on threes in last spring's "shootout." Not the beatiful basketball display that Stu Scott claims it was.

holy cow, the Magic are swamping the Hawks..at one point the score was 100-51..no kidding. Also, I would have preferred to see Nuggs/Pistons on ESPN over Suns/Mavs (hello? it's not 2006 anymore!).

38 points in 35 minutes of a slow-paced game (not counting the end-game foulfest). Phenomenal individual and team defense. 7 boards, 6 assists, 4 steals, and 3 blocks.
    Ridiculous.

Lebron was remarkable tonight. Forced a few jumpers, but that'll happen. He was still all-around brilliant. And how about that half-court shot he put up when the Celtics were hacking Ben Wallace? I'd like to see a good video replay of that one, 'cuz I'm not sure Lebron didn't get that off in time. It's close, at least.
