Ball Don't Lie - NBA

Disgraced former NBA referee Tim Donaghy's new tell-all book, "Blowing the Whistle: The Culture of Fraud in the NBA," has been canceled by publishers over concerns of potential liability.

After reading some of the excerpts, this news comes as no surprise.

The book, obtained by Deadspin, details Donaghy's "dirty tricks" used for gambling on NBA games and the events leading up to his conviction on federal wire fraud charges.

According to Deadspin, it falls somewhere between a confessional and an indictment, both of Donaghy's former colleagues and their employer. The posted excerpts definitely run with the latter.

For example, here's Donaghy throwing Dick Bavetta under the bus:

"Two weeks before the 2003-04 season ended, Bavetta and I were assigned to officiate a game in Oakland. That afternoon before the tip-off, we were discussing an upcoming game on our schedule. It was the last regular-season game we were scheduled to work, pitting Denver against San Antonio. Denver had lost a game a few weeks prior because of a mistake made by the referees, a loss that could be the difference between them making or missing the playoffs. Bavetta told me Denver needed the win and that it would look bad for the staff and the league if the Nuggets missed the playoffs by one game. There were still a few games left on the schedule before the end of the season, and the standings could potentially change. But on that day in Oakland, Bavetta looked at me and casually stated, 'Denver will win if they need the game. That's why I'm on it.'"

"I was thinking, How is Denver going to win on the road in San Antonio? At the time, the Spurs were arguably the best team in the league. Bavetta answered my question before it was asked.

'Duncan will be on the bench with three fouls within the first five minutes of the game,' he calmly stated.

Bavetta went on to inform me that it wasn't the first time the NBA assigned him to a game for a specific purpose. He cited examples, including the 1993 playoff series when he put New Jersey guard Drazen Petrovic on the bench with quick fouls to help Cleveland beat the Nets. He also spoke openly about the 2002 Los Angeles-Sacramento series and called himself the NBA's 'go-to guy.'

As it turned out, Denver didn't need the win after all; they locked up a spot in the playoffs before they got to San Antonio. In a twist of fate, it was the Spurs that ended up needing the win to have a shot at the division title, and Bavetta generously accommodated. In our pregame meeting, he talked about how important the game was to San Antonio and how meaningless it was to Denver, and that San Antonio was going to get the benefit of the calls that night. Armed with this inside information, I called Jack Concannon before the game and told him to bet the Spurs.

To no surprise, we won big. San Antonio blew Denver out of the building that evening, winning by 26 points. When Jack called me the following morning, he expressed amazement at the way an NBA game could be manipulated. Sobering, yes; amazing, no. That's how the game is played in the National Basketball Association."

Based on the posted excerpts, which I recommend you read in full, it looks like the entire book is written in vague accusations, hearsay and rumors. Of course, this is exactly what I'd expect from a guilty party.

Look, I'm sure there's some truth to Donaghy's accusations — though, like Dave at Blazersedge, I don't trust him as far as I could throw him if he were tied to a hippo — but it sure reads like a desperate man trying to push the attention away from the fact that he's a cheater and a criminal.

At any rate, the whole thing makes me sick.

What do you think?

*******

UPDATE: The NBA says Lawrence B. Pedowitz, the guy who investigated the NBA's officiating program last time around, will tackle Donaghy's latest claims. Lawrence B. Pedowitz. Sounds important.

is this a surprise to anyone? with so much money on the line in the league, and with it so easy for a ref to make a call one way or another without raising serious red flags, this has prob been going on long before donaghey

If any of this is true and sees the light of day it will make the baseball steroid era look like as positive as the moon landing. I could see the NBA fold over something like this.

It makes me sick too, Skeets but because there probably is some truth to what he's saying. If there's truth to it, that means there have been games decided under some less than auspicious circumstances.

As an embittered fan, I find it very easy to believe.
Looking at it dispassionately, though, I also find it easy to dismiss as nothing more than the desperate attempt of a disgraced official to (a) minimize his own downfall and (b) drag some other folks down with him.
If Congress wastes my tax dollars looking into this stupidity, I'll be seething.

Sick to my stomach Skeets. We all know superstar calls exist, and refs do hold personal grudges against certain players. The fact that it's all a game to them though sickens me. This is a job that should be taken seriously. As a fan, we emotionally invest too much into our favorite teams and the NBA in general to be treated like a couple of jerks because a guy has to cover a spread, or is pissed because Iverson is playing that night.

Didn't the feds already determine that Donaghy is a lying scumbag and that his allegations were nothing but hot air? The FBI already determined that there is no value or credence to his allegations so why the talk about the NBA folding?

Like him or not, he was there. And if he's a rat, fine. He got screwed and the rest of the referees are home free. So it's his turn to do some of the screwing.
Does anyone remember in 2002 when the Lakers beat the Kings in Game 7? ESPN: "Now David Stern doesn't have to worry about a Kings/Bucks Finals." What, were they joking? And if so, where did it come from? And watch Michael Jordan (now that's a gambler) in the 1993 Finals in Chicago. He took about 8 steps around Dan Majerle right in front of an official. I wonder if that would've been ignored if it was B. J. Armstrong?
Look, the book will be controversial and it won't matter because the NBA makes money and gives the government taxes.

Everyone pegged Canseco as a lying scumbag too when he published his book. I think this idiot is most likely full of crap. But if this type of stuff does pan out as legit, the NBA is in a world of hurt. Systemic manipulation by the referee's would be worse than player manipulation (ala the Black Sox). You can't ban the League office and make everything better.

He is. He became a criminal while working as an NBA ref.

how can you trust David J. Stern over this guy?
    the short answer: you can't.
the long answer: they were both "in" on it but someone had to take the fall at some point.

If I remember correctly, the Feds found that there was no 'PROOF' to charge anyone with anything, especially since Ref calls are based almost completely on their judgement. But am I surprised about this? I've thought that the Ref's calls have been bad for a long, long time. Too many phantom calls, calls because they don't like a coach or player, make-up calls for an earlier bad call and so on. If one is true, maybe the others are too.

I think this ref is on to something....remeber the 2006 finals, when the heat won......as far I am concerned....Dallas won that series....I remeber game4, if dallas won, it would have been 3-1, and if heat won, it was 2-2. dirk hit one of the clutchest shot of all time over a weak side helping Oneal, and haslam whom is checking him with 3.1 seconds left......then Dewayne Wade drives the ball, lengths of the court, under preassure and had to make two moves to the basket, and then drove to the hoop and kicked jason Terry as he went for a out of control lay up....now that is some BS....I also remeber a play off game between the spurs and the Suns, in which both teams were so on Fire, that Dick Bavetta started to call fouls just so we can goto commercial break, and the game wouldn't be over in 20 minutes.....
so I wouldn't count out all what Donahay is saying

anyone who watched the cavs-magic series last year knows for a fact it was rigged, the refs were blatantly trying to get the cavs into the finals. and the magic STILL won. once they got to the finals, we saw calls we had not gotten all playoffs long, because they wanted a competitive series.

Oh come on!!! I have always suspected for many years as I'm sure others do as well, that all professional sports are fixed. Probably half the time. Everything from the NBA to the NFL and even more so right now in the World Series. Just look at all the silly blown calls made in the ALCS and the NLCS.....The umpires and the refs are in the bag........

I watch a lot of the big 3 American sports (football, basketball and baseball). There are suspect and even ridiculous calls in all three, but the only sport where it repeatedly seems like the referees are trying to determine the outcome of games is in the NBA. If anyone watched the Dallas Mavericks/Miami Heat series in 2006 then they'll know what I am talking about. The only way the Heat stay in that series is with repeated phantom and blown calls. I'm sure we could list 10-15 series determined by referees. I almost feel redeemed for telling all of my buddies for years that the NBA was crooked...and now it turns out it actually was.

And there are people that still bet on these games? Unless you know where the fix is, how can you possibly think you have a chance. I've never ever bet on sports. (except in an office pool or two) There's just too much BIG money to ever think its a level playing field. If you can bet on it, its fixed in some way or another.

Hmmm... Can you say Jose Canseco? Of course most if this is true. HE has nothing to loose. Look at the NBA and how games are called. Does everyone forget the Jordan Rules? I guess the no one saw the push off Jordan put on Russel in the Finals. LOL they play it over and over. when The league has made players like Kobe Lebron and Wade to name a few as so called super stars. They are great no doubt about it but with out the refs they would never score 50 points. Look at the box scores when one does. They usually shoot 20-25 free throws when they have those huge games. Most of those guys push off charge and wave defenders arms to get those facial dunks. We all know this an offensive game odd that points in the last 5 years have gone from the 80s low 90s to games now ver 100 on a regular basis. But never the less I still like this game and I will continue to watch.
