Done deal: Jason Kidd traded to Dallas

I was just about to start my super-late lunch -- Campbell's Italian wedding soup; an inspired combination of meatballs, spinach and pasta, yum -- but I figured I should get this posted before it goes official. (UPDATE: Ding!)

According to Marc Stein at ESPN, the New Jersey Nets and Dallas Mavericks have basically agreed on a deal to send Jason Kidd back to Texas. Yup. It's another blockbuster, folks. Think you can you handle it? Here's what we know:

The deal -- salvaged from talks on a three-way trade with Portland that developed and fizzled quickly two weeks ago -- has Dallas sending 24-year-old point guard Devin Harris, veteran swingman Jerry Stackhouse, the expiring contracts of center DeSagana Diop and swingman Devean George and guard Maurice Ager to New Jersey for Kidd and forward Malik Allen.

First thoughts? Ugh. Dallas is giving up way too much for a 35-year-old point guard. Way too much. Forget arguing about how much of an upgrade Kidd over (a healthy) Devin Harris really is ... losing Stack and Diop? That's a hard hit to the Mavs' depth. Those two are solid playoff performers.

Second thoughts? Soup time! Stay tuned as this story develops ...

UPDATE: Well, that was quick. Kidd is going to Dallas! The slightly revised details:

Kidd and Malik Allen will go to Dallas for 24-year-old point guard Devin Harris, Jerry Stackhouse, DeSagana Diop, Devean George, Maurice Ager, $3 million and two future No. 1 draft picks. In a side deal, the Nets sent guard Antoine Wright to Dallas for a future second-round pick.

I don't think this is enough to get over the hump. Another team (phoenix) selling their souls for one more shot at a championship

dallas is giving up waaayyy to much for this deal. If Kidd gets hurt they are right back to where they are now except they ware worse becasue of the loss of the other players.

WoW. I don't know that this will really help Dallas. Although Kidd is a solid athlete and Dallas has been lacking a PG for sometime. On the flip side Dallas has been struggling all season to find a groove. I guess we will see soon enough.

i think the mavs should of tried for andre miller instead & kept devin harris. this is too many players being sent to the nets. mavs have always been successful due to their deep bench full of veteran players. they're losing quite a bit. now granted, kidd is top 3 pg in this league, but how long can he sustain his level of productivity. i really liked watching devin harris play. he's young and can play at a high tempo for the next decade, i don't see kidd playing for more than 3-4 more years.

Maybe the playoffs this year should just include all the teams from the west (except for Minn, Seattle, Mem)--it would at least allow the East to rest up for next year.

these western conference teams must be shaking in their boots making these ridiculous trades. the Lakers shook things up before the trade deadline and theyre gonna shake things up in the playoffs. The biggest problem with the Lakers trade was the question of whether the team would gel and whether Pao would get the triangle down in time to make a serious run. Now with dallas and phoenix having the same issue with trades that were nowhere near as complimentary to their lineup it looks like we just have to make sure we beat up on the aging spurs come playoff time. LAKERS looking good!

I like Jason Kidd and all....but, we have given up WAY too much. Think about it....Damp is injured (alot). With no Diop, we have NO center. Devean George has been playing really well lately, especially on D. Oh, and in two years when Kidd is retired, Harris is going to be kicking our butts for the next ten years with another team...just like Nash! I hate this deal. I truly hope I am wrong, but it seems this deal is for THIS year only.

That's too much to give up. Kidd is definitely one of NBA's all-time best point guards, but he's 35 years old and almost past his glory days. Devin Harris, a healthy one, is a young and reliable point guard. Stack and Diop are very effective sidemen--especially in the tough playoffs. This is Cuban's move? The Mavs will be eaten alive by the Lakers, Suns, Spurs, Hornets and Rockets--that's for sure.
