Breaking news: Raptors fire Sam Mitchell

We have our third "Pocket Square of Death" this season ...

Raptors President and General Manager Bryan Colangelo announced Wednesday afternoon that Sam Mitchell has been relieved of his duties as the team's head coach. (Relieved. I love that.)

Here's the official press release.

Doug Smith of The Toronto Star reports that Jay Triano, one of Mitchell's assistants and the longest-serving member of the coaching staff, takes over on an interim basis, becoming the first Canadian-born head coach in NBA history.

You're next, Wittman!

UPDATE: Needless to say, they're excited over at FireSamMitchell.com.

UPDATE, 6:30pm: Just finished eavesdropping in on BC's conference call and thought this little tidbit was worth sharing: When asked if last night's humiliating lose to Denver was Smitch's pink slip tipping point, Colangelo stated that the blown lead in Boston and the heartbreaking loss to New Jersey factored heavily into his decision.

the minnesota timberwolves and sacramento kings are also not that doing well, so do we all expect coaching changes on those teams as well.those teams who had coaching changes had some minimal success so i think this trend will continue if the teams are not successful.

I think if you can get Tas to pick Witt for the rest of the season on the Book Off then it could happen next week.

You know with an 8-9 record I dont understand why he was fired. 8-9 isn't that bad, I mean it's not great but it is only one game under .500. Based on that alot of teams in the NBA should have coaches on the way out. Bye Bye coaches.

Thank the lord. Sammy was perfect for this team when it was 06-07. They needed his coaching style then. Now they're all grown up and they need a COACH. Fifteen game winning streak anyone? haha

I think this will be good for the Raptors. Sam was a good coach and instilled a winning attitude on the team but he was not a great game coach. Many games have been lost over the last few years because of decisions made by Sam at the end of games. I loved his no nonsense approach and I think he would be a great coach for another team, but time had run its course with the Raptors. That being said, is Jay the right replacement? I would suggest he deserves a shot but not a year long one. This season is not over, Jermaine is fine, Calderon will get back to form, and then everybody else has to step up. Joey Graham needs to decide who he wants to be. Andrea is progressing and showing signs of grit and intelligence. Moon needs to find a way to help his team. Parker needs to play within himself which he mostly does, and Kapono needs to demand his shots and score like he did for miami when D Wade was out.
In the end, if they can keep Jermaine, Chris and Andrea with Calderon they have a very good core of players. Everyone else in expendable right now including Parker. We need a shut down perimeter defender, and then we have a team. Then they need a coach who can make brilliant moves and help win games for you instead of losing them for you. Is Lawrence Frank available please. I hope Jay uses all his experience and energy to make the most of this opportunity in Toronto because though Ihave my doubts, I would love Jay to work out and be what the team needs to get to the next level.

Jay Triano, this dude used to coach team Canada..........Team Canada, that team never made it anywhere in Olympics or even World games, put those two together it adds up to he sucks. And the Raps is gonna suck more than they already do. Jay Triano, thats a joke. B.C should of coached the team

It's about time. Now the Raptors can actually win a playoff series.
Don't get me wrong - I was really entertained by the Sam Mitchell personality + suits, as with the whole of Toronto- but I absolutely hated the coaching style. Mitchell was a good guy to mature with, but like boxers, you just need a new guy to take you to the next level when you can't learn anything anymore. Mitchell coached his way, not that way his team was built.
I think Bryan Colangelo's only mistake as the GM was that ridiculous contract extension to Sam Mitchell AND passing at the chance at Mike D'Antoni this past offseason.
So how about your boy Jay Triano, Skeets? What is he, like 3-0? His suits and style may not match Mitchell, but it's about time the OG gets the chance at running things.

Umm, when Sam Dalembert is your star it wouldn't matter if Phil Jackson was coaching, you'd be going no where fast

EnChanted/Quinto: I think you're getting Triano confused with current Team Canada coach/pretty boy Leo Rautins. Triano was the head coach of the Canadian men’s team from 1998-2004 posting a 52-42 (.553) record.

Yeah no i know, I was just trying to make a point that when your best player is Dalembert, doesnt matter whose coaching...so Triano didnt even get to coach a team with anyone good on it really.

I honestly believe that JVG or Flip Saunders are best fit for this team. I think BC doesn't want to announce names yet, so, until the opportunity comes for either JVG, Flip, etc. to sign with the Raps, Jay Triano is our coach for the rest of the season.
    Anyway, good luck to Sam.
