We have our third "Pocket Square of Death" this season ...

Raptors President and General Manager Bryan Colangelo announced Wednesday afternoon that Sam Mitchell has been relieved of his duties as the team's head coach. (Relieved. I love that.)
Here's the official press release.
Doug Smith of The Toronto Star reports that Jay Triano, one of Mitchell's assistants and the longest-serving member of the coaching staff, takes over on an interim basis, becoming the first Canadian-born head coach in NBA history.
You're next, Wittman!
UPDATE: Needless to say, they're excited over at FireSamMitchell.com.
UPDATE, 6:30pm: Just finished eavesdropping in on BC's conference call and thought this little tidbit was worth sharing: When asked if last night's humiliating lose to Denver was Smitch's pink slip tipping point, Colangelo stated that the blown lead in Boston and the heartbreaking loss to New Jersey factored heavily into his decision.

In the end, if they can keep Jermaine, Chris and Andrea with Calderon they have a very good core of players. Everyone else in expendable right now including Parker. We need a shut down perimeter defender, and then we have a team. Then they need a coach who can make brilliant moves and help win games for you instead of losing them for you. Is Lawrence Frank available please. I hope Jay uses all his experience and energy to make the most of this opportunity in Toronto because though Ihave my doubts, I would love Jay to work out and be what the team needs to get to the next level.

Don't get me wrong - I was really entertained by the Sam Mitchell personality + suits, as with the whole of Toronto- but I absolutely hated the coaching style. Mitchell was a good guy to mature with, but like boxers, you just need a new guy to take you to the next level when you can't learn anything anymore. Mitchell coached his way, not that way his team was built.
I think Bryan Colangelo's only mistake as the GM was that ridiculous contract extension to Sam Mitchell AND passing at the chance at Mike D'Antoni this past offseason.
So how about your boy Jay Triano, Skeets? What is he, like 3-0? His suits and style may not match Mitchell, but it's about time the OG gets the chance at running things.
