Ball Don't Lie - NBA

Frittering, I say!

Goofy though it may be, that headline is completely and utterly hyperbole-free. Boris Diaw is playing for the best possible pro basketball team for his skill set, the team that employs him is in desperate need of what he brings to the table (high and low-post passing, shot-blocking, post scoring, rebounding, perimeter shooting ... suffice to say he brings a lot to the table), and Diaw wants precious little to do with it.

The guy floats. He floated in his first two years in Atlanta, which made sense, because only a few thousand people had to watch him float for about 23 minutes a game while playing out of position at guard. Firmly ensconced as the Suns' do-it-all guy off the bench these days, and with a fat bankroll in his pocket to boot, Diaw should be thriving in a Suns offense that wants to see the ball go through his hands every time down court while Steve Nash is getting a blow. But he's not. And the Suns, though 17-6, are struggling if Nash isn't dominating.

And what's most frustrating is the obvious fact that Boris knows better. We saw him run things in 2005-06, keeping the Amare-less Suns in the championship picture while contributing across the board. He knows how to run an offense, he knows where the ball should end up, and he knows how to balance his playmaking and scoring instincts and make the sound basketball decision. Don't let him fool you, this guy knows what's up.

The East Valley Tribune's Scott Bordow has just about had enough:

"It's about time someone in the Suns' organization publicly lit a fire under Diaw. The question is, will he listen to what's being said about him?

Steve Nash said Diaw has been told several times, by several of his teammates, that he needs to be more assertive.

They may as well have been talking to a basketball support."

Well, that would be silly. They should just talk to Boris a little more. Maybe yell a bit. Maybe play him 35 minutes off the bench one night to see if he still enjoys the game.

Remember, this goes much deeper than a guy not screaming when he grabs a rebound (or grabbing rebounds at all), or refusing to dunk, or playing a finesse game. Diaw played a finesse game two years ago, and he was brilliant.

It's about being aggressive, without mistaking activity and outward emotion for achievement. Diaw doesn't need to dunk the ball more or send shots into the 14th row, but he does need to establish low post position and ask for the ball. He needs to quickly cut to the high post when the defense is overplaying Amare Stoudemire down low and Grant Hill can't make the entry pass. He needs to make the same speedy and sound decisions he made off and with the ball two seasons ago. He doesn't need to flex his muscles, he just needs to be aggressive, and revel in the spirit of competition.

The preceding paragraph was brought to you by Bill Walton.

Bill will sometimes grinningly agree that he is a bit rich on the hyperbole at times, but I think even when he does pepper on a bit too much hot sauce, he is often spot on in his analysis. I have often wondered what has happened to that basketball genius named Boris. When Amare was out that season, Diaw was an absolute basketball wizard who mesmerized with his many talents and intelligent decisions on the court. This season, when he enters a game, he appears lost and even unmotivated. I pray Boris reads and listens to Bill's counsel. Keep prodding, Bill. I get the feeling that many current players realize you speak the truth, even when it hurts. I hope Boris can look inside and let your words be the spur that provides the motivation he so obviously needs!

Grant Hill's wheels are going to give Boris a chance at some point.

Yes, there was a point where Boris was averaging a triple double a game that season. I remember because I stole him late in a trade (he also G/F/C eligibility) and won my fantasy league. I am a big suns fan and would just love him to be more assertive...but he seems to get lost in the shuffle. And with Grant Hill playing well and running the offense when Nash is out, it will continue. Unless Hill has to start sitting out, which is likely.
Please, Boris, start taking it to the defense. Start playing like you want to win...

What is he supposed to be the missing piece of thier championship run? Please. As long as Tim Duncan can make it to the gym who cares?
His team is doing Ok and you have Mare, Nash, Barbosa,Marion, Hill, Bell... he was never THAT impactful, and he never will be, so who really cares about Boris Diaw? If Kwame Brown makes $9mil per is anyone really overpaid? or are they all?

i think in the long-run diaw will be great for the suns, once hill and marion are gone and nash is on his last legs. diaw will be great all over the floor, with barbosa at pg, they should be a good team but not a great team after nash's play declines a bit

In response to the "laker fan" in Post #7: Do you need me to break out the tape of the 2006 playoffs when Diaw averaged 19 ppg and was dominant as the Suns' only low post threat? Remember the OT of the pivotal Game 6 vs. Lakers when Boris scored the first six points of that OT to set the tone? Boris has mad skill, he is just the most non-chalant player in the NBA. Somebody needs to get this guy ticked off somehow, he is too laid back of a guy. Somebody needs to replay the tape of that Raptors game a week ago to Boris everyday. That was vintage Boris!

but bobo has the tendency to disappear at time. he let down the french national team twice in the past summers. and in my mind, he is the main reason why they are out of the race for an olympic berth (despite a superbe effort from tony parker).a raptor fan

    Hi there!
The thing is simple: D'Antoni said he was very useful to the team, even though not spectacular. And I agree! You don't need to show off to be good. Basket can be subtle sometimes...hard to understand for some beasts! Boris is doing great!

Give me a break...The guy is a complimentary player, his persona is to be laid back. The dynamics of the team has changed. Grant Hill is playing great and overall the team is at least as productive as you can expect. Its unrealistic to think every player on any team is going to play at their full potential when factoring in the chemistry needed for that happen. The team has options, express confidence in Diaw and leverage his future value to the team in the event there is a big injury as was the case before, or trade him. The Suns are unrealistic to expect everyone to be at the top of their game. If that was the case you could just give them the championship trophy now.

Well you gotta ask yourself what changed for Diaw that both made him an incredible player and what made him revert back to the player he is now. It doesn't take a genius to see that he doesn't enjoy the same status as he did when Amare was out. Now there's Grant Hill taking even more from him. Everything he did that year is down. Minutes, Being an Option, status, etc. The Suns would be better off trading him because with the talent pool thats there, he will not be that player unless people get hurt. Might as well get a role player who can handle diminished minutes.

He is no longer "the man" or "the go to guy" . He's not even in the starting line-up. No way you are going to get the numbers or the effort out of someone who is delegated to what 6th option.
You want someone to put forth the effort, give him 35min of playing time a night.

maybe a little lineup shake-up is in order. i say they start diaw over grant hill. nash, bell, marion, diaw, amare. give diaw a chance to prove that he's a worthy starter. and that he's worth the cool couple million dollars the suns are wasting on him right now. grant hill, i think, is still the better scorer and he would be good coming off the bench along with barbosa. marion would then be playing at his natural spot. diaw's entry into the starting lineup would result in better ball movement. what do you think guys? just a thought.

lol at your comment daniel g, its not like hes getting no time on the floor. he is averaging 26 minutes a game, which is 5 minutes less than last year, and 4 less then the year before that. but still they tried putting him in the starting line up last year remember? he still do much then ethier. i think that the suns should just trade him now. let me ask you, what has he shown over the last two seasons, that is worth the 9 million he is payed each year? which is the fourth highest contract on the team by the way. i think unless he really picks it up over the next month, with the way things are going suns are better off with out him.

Boris is fat and needs to lay off the "French" fries. Actually, the problem is that he lacks the ability to work himself into the offense, which is fine because it isn't needed. He is a great passer but so is Nash and Hill...and there just aren't enough opportunities for Boris to do what made him so great in '05. He is now a role player and asked to do the BORing things like rebound, set picks and defend 2nd team SF/PF's. Something tells me that the Suns will be OK without an 05-06 Boris Diaw though...mainly because of all the talent on that Suns roster. If you spoiled fans in Phx. want to send Boris over here to play with the Warriors, Don Nelson will get him back in playoff form.
