According
to the Sacramento Bee's Sam Amick, by way of Sactown
Royalty (whose proprietor I just realized that I completely ripped
off with this
post, without knowing it), it appears as if Beno Udrih has agreed to a
contract with the team he worked for last year.
(The Kings, they are.)
The terms? About 32 million dollars, spread over five years. Starting a six million for 2008-09.
Udrih's a good guard, a small step below average in many ways, and he just signed for the average salary until 2013. I give Kings fans another 13 months before their unanimity is palpable in opposition to this reported deal. Udrih's not a bad player, and the salary isn't too over the top, but why not let Udrih see what he can get on the open market?
Did the Kings hear of that many teams ready to offer Beno the full mid-level exception?
Couldn't they have let him try and seek out another suitor, thereby defining the market?
Why won't they admit that the team is rebuilding?
Why doesn't anyone get that point guard is an awfully easy position to re-fill,
and though the free agent options at the position aren't great this season,
that shouldn't matter to Sacramento.
They're not going anywhere. They need to dump dead weight and start over.
This isn't an egregious deal. Not in the slightest. It just could have been avoided. These MLEs add up after a while. This relationship could have been extended under different terms.
The brilliant Tom Ziller, who isn't necessarily opposed to the Beno deal as far as I can tell (or, he's more or less resigned to it), offered this breakdown of Udrih's contributions just minutes before the news hit that Beno was coming back to Sacto.

Also, this doesn't help 2nd-rd-draft-pick Singletary secure any minutes.

politics as usual.
im from sac and i know how bigoted they are there
so they have to have at least a couple white players
on the roster or starting.

It would have been interesting if the Kings offered something less, then Udrih go for the Clips, only to have the Clips call back that night saying, "Good news Beno, we just got Baron Davis!! So what were we talking about earlier today? Verteran's minimum?"
