Ball Don't Lie - NBA

Boston 99, Dallas 92

(See, that's his secret. He just stares down the rim. Never takes his eye off of it.

You know why cats don't want anything to do with the people that stare at them or want their attention? It's not because they're aloof. It's because they take the wide, unblinking eye as a sign of confrontation.

And that's what Pierce does to the rim. He lets it know who's boss. Doesn't matter if it's New Orleans, or New Year. Doesn't even bother to look at the net. Just the rim. Confrontation.)

I have so much respect for Paul Pierce's game, it's ridiculous. He didn't do a damn thing in that fourth quarter that should have surprised us at all, but it's still worth the standing O. He's been working that magic for years, on teams hoping to make the playoffs, on teams hoping for a ring, or on teams desperate to get to 30 wins. Always coming through, either keeping it close, or putting it away. Laugh at the wheelchair and rip him for moping at times (like, all of 2003-04), but the man is just a stone cold winner.

And if your team is in the penalty, forget it. He doesn't have to flail or destroy his body like Dwyane Wade (who, you'll notice, is shooting far fewer free throws since his 6-4 frame fell apart in 2006-07), he just puts his head down and gets to the line. 14 times, in fact, on Thursday, making 13. 18 in the fourth quarter, 31 in the game.

It was needed. Though the Celtics didn't exactly take it to the final buzzer in beating New Orleans on Wednesday, this was a tired team, and Dallas was a potent team early on. Certainly not hot enough to make it so you ever thought this game was out of reach for the C's, nobody should have thought that, but certainly strong enough to win. Or strong enough to make Boston work. Or strong enough to fall just short, in the end.

To me, the key was one final sequence that saw Pierce nail a spinning turnaround jumper at one end, followed by Dirk Nowitzki given the opportunity to hit nearly the same jumper at the top of the key on Dallas' next possession. Problem was, Dirk didn't release. He pump-faked, his elbow caught Pierce, and whether or not you agree with the foul, the issue is the shot wasn't going in. Should have taken the shot. Should have followed Pierce's lead.

Dirk, who the Celtics coveted in the 1998 Draft (they had to settle for the Truth), finished with 37 points, but on a limited team even playing at home, you have to play nearly perfect in order to beat the champs. Even if the champs have no legs. Well, Rajon Rondo (19 points, 15 rebounds, 14 assists, six turnovers) had plenty of legs, but it wasn't pretty in Boston's 40-point first half.

And Dallas didn't have enough to put Boston away. Not when Dallas (who is a slightly above-average rebounding team per possession, even with Dirk's caroms falling off this season) gets out-rebounded 50-31, or when the Mavericks numbah deux et trey shoot 6-19 (osh Howard) and 1-8 (ason Kidd).

It's a joke from 1995, and it never gets old.

Not going to rip on Dallas, though. They lost to a better team, even given the better team's mitigating circumstances.

Miami 95, Chicago 93

The difference between Chicago's play and Miami's work wasn't glaring, but it was enough that I'm not going to bash my head over a dunderheaded turnover from Thabo Sefolosha in the final minute. Thabo's miscue was just the last thing that cost Chicago the game on Thursday. Or the penultimate thing, depending on whether or not you think Tyrus Thomas should overplay as much as he did on Dwyane Wade in the final seconds. I'm still undecided on that.

I'm not as undecided on Thomas' six turnovers, or Chicago's inability to execute in the half court, refusing to run plays for Luol Deng (2-6 shooting) against a team he historically does well against. That's what lost the game, poor offense, and not one blown pass.

For the second game in a row, Andres Nocioni played in front of Deng down the stretch, because it seems like Noc is able to get his shot off more against tougher defensive teams.

No, Noc is able to get bad shots off easier against a tougher defense. He'll chuck a three-pointer from straightaway without even thinking about the context or the likelihood that the shot will actually go in. Deng doesn't, but Deng also needs screens set for him, and the ball to be moving. And that's no secret. The Bulls knew that when they signed him to that extension.

Perhaps if he pumped his fist more, he'd be allowed to do what Nocioni does, namely take two more shots, making the same amount as Lu, in 12 fewer minutes.

This one's on Miami, though. Michael Beasley was aggressive in picking up 21 and seven rebounds off the bench, I didn't agree with Daequan Cook's shot selection (what else is new), but he did hit 4-10 (4-6 from long range) and finish with 12 points, and Shawn Marion made 6-10 without having much called for him. And the defense was sound, forcing Chicago into turnovers and 44 percent shooting.

Golden State 105, Portland 98

One team pays attention for one-in-three possessions, the other team works its tail off from beginning to end. One team can't wait for the impending break, and the other acted as if it wants to play on Friday night. That might not be a bad idea. Let's see if the Warriors can beat the Rookie team.

Portland turned the ball over on nearly a quarter of its possessions, didn't get to the line, and watched as the Warriors piled up the second-chance points and hustle plays. Portland actually out-rebounded Golden State in the loss, but the Warriors were more interested in this one, as evidenced by a shocking 39-43 mark from the free throw line.

Portland kind of made it close in the end, but you never felt as if the Warriors were falling apart, or letting this one get away from them. Too much effort.

    I love Paul Pierce's game.
And I'm glad he had the decency, after putting the smack down on my own team, not to lose to Dallas. The world needed these PSquared heroics.... the Dallas loss didn't do the Hornets any harm either.

I think I put a ton of effort into them. I think taping them and getting up to watch or re-watch at 5am after a few hours sleep is quite a bit of effort.
Was there anything else to that game that I'm missing? Portland absolutely did not show up, while the Warriors stayed active on the glass and got to the line. Anything more that needs to be added?
Maybe check the word counts of the two Los Angeles games from Wednesday night before questioning how much time and effort I put into this stuff.
You want to question effort? Look at the host of ABC's NBA studio show, who goes on TV every Wednesday at 5:30 to tell his audience that he's watching "Damages" that night, instead of the 10-12 games needed to keep up with the league he's supposed to be advising us on.
    Also, sod off.

Why can't the late games be on the regular channel? Why do I have to watch it till midnight and not have it replayed the next day like when it is on CCSPN?Some of us have to go to sleep whiether or not the game is done.If the other channels want to cover the game at least they could let it be replayed the next day at noon time either on their own channel or the regular Celtics' channel. Some of us work the third shift and love to see OUR team play the following day.

A teeny glimmer of hope for the Dubs. I know it will amount to naught, but we live for short-term pleasure in Warriors land. There is no future because it hasn't happened yet, so why fret about it?
I think your analysis was spot-on, but you might want to have added Monta with two clutch shots to stop the bleeding as the Warriors were getting ready to give it away to Brandon Roy. I was following by refreshing the Yahoo box scores and it seemed entirely possible that Roy was the only guy on the floor in the last half of the 4th quarter.

KD, I know you normally ignore the "you hate us", "Kobe is great" stuff, but you don't need to reply to the work ethic gear either.
Down here we get 3 games live a week (will increase with a new HD channel) so any actual basketball insight is more than welcome.
Do you think that post 2010 if Dallas gets a big free agent (maybe Bosh) that Dirk could be a Manu like 6th man. No need to run plays, just instant 7'0" offense for a couple of years.

KD, hinrich played over deng down the stretch last night, not nocioni. they used a kirk/rose/bg/tyrus/noah lineup that got them back into it. and while i agree that a lot of plays cost the bulls the game, not just thabo's turnover, why didnt u mention how ridiculous del negros decision was to insert thabo-- someone who didnt play in the second half until the last 6 seconds-- for rose for the sole purpose of inbounding the ball??

Because as much as I rip on VDN, I wanted to make the point that mistakes in the first quarter cost the Bulls just as much, and Matt from Blogabull did a great job earlier this morning on the Rose benching.
And I should have been clearer about the Noc thing, but that second quarter run of his was just nuts.
Daniel, Dirk at the age, I don't know. And if they trade for VC, the 2010 space might be out the window. Plus, who knows, Howard might have his head on straight by then, and they might pick up his 2010-11 option. That last line was pretty dumb of me.

Hey Louie D, what does the d stand for?? I am guessing Dumb. Have you never sat courtside? or just watched the games? If you have you would notice that trash talking- name calling has ALWAYS been apart of basketball at least as for back as I can say I watched games between Magic and Bird and they gabbed at each other all the time. They are grown men and not little boys. When you were little your mom never told you that sticks and stones and such. To say that what is said matters is BS. I am also guessing that you never played basketball on a team past the local town teams in your early teens. What I am saying is that when you compete for a living and your one of the best in your chosen profession there come with that a certian mental mind set. They all (kobe,CP3,DWade,ect)think that they are the best. KG just likes to remind people on the court whom the best is right now. Right now who is the CHAMP? Everyone knows it. So what your saying is that the KG is a man and can deal with it and all the other players are little boys that go crying to there mamma saying that mean man with the #5 said some bad things. I have heard players say that they want to kill there family, burn down there house and kill there dogs. It is not some thing you could say to a child, but there not children!!!! Take your moral high ground and we'll take the championships. P.S PP was the Finals MVP and I believe that award comes from someone else beside PP. P.P.S. don't ever watch the NFL becuase you would never want to stop complaining about what the coaches say on the sidelines. Never mind the players. In short Louie please move back under that rock you have been living under and just close your eyes and ears and it will all go away PROMISE.

Yes, actually, there was quite a bit more to the game. How about Turiaf stepping up the effort in Biedrins' absense against a much bigger team? Or the 9 offensive fouls called, a product of a ridiculous amount of flopping for both teams (Maggette being the most obvious offender)? B-Roy's 37 points on 21 shots? Oden remaining relevant even though he ran into early foul trouble, something that hasn't been the case this year?
I apologize for touching a nerve - I appreciate what you do here. It just seems like sometimes you spend a lot more time analyzing games the further east they are.

They really should have the Warriors play the rookie squad. They already play that all-star game style, and we would actually get to see some Warriors during the weekend for a change.
I cant complain about the summary of the Warriors/Blazers game... I was nodding off even as it got close for a second towards the end. Not sure I would get up at 5 AM to watch the Warriors this year, so props to you KD.

Paul Pierce. I know everybody loves him now, but what I saw last night against the Mavericks, (and I know we have come to be a warped sportsworld society of "you ain't trying if you ain't cheating") but after watching him taking the big flop against Dirk, and then pushing off Devon George with his left arm on the next play to clear himself off, and then on top of that, listening to the moron Reggie Miller ( why is this moron even announcing, what a joke) tell me what a great play it was, I have decided that the Celtics have taken over for the Warriors as the biggest punks in the NBA. They might as well have a gang name, get matching tattoos on their foreheads, and then go out and just push everyone out of the way, shoot them and then have dunk drills, so they can show how "powerful" they are. Whatever happened to the class of the Bill Russell's and Bob Cousy's, and I could go on and on. I guess those days are gone, and most of it is because the refs are just totally inept and have been for some time. And while I'm at it, how does Dick Bavetta get away with still being a referee, he hasn't had a clue for the last 5 years.

Classy Bill Russell was shoving people in the back to get rebounds in some of the footage they rolled out for his birthday. These guys are pros for a reason.
And the Warriors shed any and all punkness when they let Barnes leave.

Rondo is the man who will define the Celtics season if he keeps getting everyone involved number 18 will be in the rafters soon.
Anyone notice how the celtics react to bad call? They just shake there head.
It is a great thing to see, when all the other "superstars" have to cry like little girls everytime they think they are fouled. Kobe basicly chases reffs down the court crying
