Ball Don't Lie - NBA

Baron giving his best shot

A friend of mine called me Sunday morning and said, "I think Baron Davis could be the best athlete in the world."

After watching Davis dominate the Dallas Mavericks again in the Golden State Warriors' 103-99 win on Sunday, I think I might agree.

The guy is so strong, fast and under control that it's tough to imagine a better athlete in any sport. Think about it: Can you see him playing free safety in football? How much ground would he cover? What if he had played soccer his whole life -- how good would he be? Tennis? The guy would run down every ball and pound overheads off the court.

Fortunately for basketball fans, Baron chose hoops. What a joy it is to watch this guy play. He has unbelievable control of the ball, and he builds a head of steam and still is able to change directions going full speed in the lane.

Davis was so good Sunday that the Warriors pulled out a game they shouldn't have won. In fact, for the first time in the series, Dallas looked like it had control of the action. Avery Johnson had his squad playing a 3-2 zone almost the entire game, and it accomplished several things.

One, it allowed DeSagana Diop to stay on the floor because he didn't have to play anyone one-on-one. Diop was a major factor as a defensive presence at the rim, blocking four shots. Two, the zone kept the pace of the game to the Mavs' liking, for the most part. Unlike Game 3 on Friday, Sunday's Game 4 was not a free for all -- at least until the final minutes. And three, the zone took defensive pressure off Dirk Nowitzki, who had been picked on in the man-to-man throughout the series.

Unfortunately for Dallas, Dirk couldn't take advantage of his defensive freedom by knocking down shots at the other end. Golden State continued to harass Nowitzki with its many athletes and switching defenses. Dirk normally feasts on smaller guards who switch onto him in pick-and-rolls, but Davis and Jason Richardson are big and strong enough to force him away from the hoop just a little bit outside his comfort zone. Nowitzki again looked hurried and off balance on his many wayward jumpers, and after getting to the rim in the first half several times, he spent most of the second half launching perimeter shots.

So now it's a 3-1 series lead for the Warriors, and the Mavericks have to win three in a row to avoid maybe the biggest upset in NBA playoff history. Phoenix pulled off the feat last season against the Lakers, and there's no reason why Dallas can't do the same thing.

One big difference? After the Suns lost a heartbreaker to L.A. in Game 4 last year, Steve Nash calmly went to the podium and congratulated Kobe Bryant, talked about how winning Game 5 would change the momentum and how his team could still come back and win the series. Nowitzki, on the other hand, told the Dallas Morning News on Saturday that if his team lost Game 4 "the season will be pretty much over." Not exactly what Dirk's teammates needed to hear from their leader.

I keep saying Dallas can come back and win the series, and after Sunday, I believe there's some basis for that prediction. The Mavs finally had the right plan to control the game, but the Warriors' athletes made enough big plays to win the game. In particular, Baron Davis -- the world's best athlete -- was ridiculously good. If he keeps playing like he has been, it may not matter what Dallas does. But if Davis cools off at all, the Mavs still can pull it off. The only question is whether or not Nowitzki believes it.

Best athlete in the world? lol. Dun forget tht federer, jordan, tiger woods, schumacher and etc r more than qualified to be called the best athlete in the world. Btw, the post season this year is a bit exciting since most of the "gigantic" teams r gunned down by those underdogs. It's getting more interesting to watch. This is why i love this game. =)

Oh come on Steve Kerr, we all know the Mavs are done. GS Warriors are too much for them, even if they lose game 5 in Dallas, there's no way they will lose in Oaktown in front of our insanely devoted and loud fans. The fans are the heart beat of the team and won't let them give away the series to the Mavs. Go Warriors, keep defying the nay sayers, especially that fat piece of crap Charles Barkeley, who has nothing good to say about our team, and has the nerve to waer a Mavs jersey during the post-game show tonight. Chuck, you're an idiot.

the mavericks are finished. what will they be thinking on the way back to texas. great, were back home, but they came too. those warriors are still here.if its even close at the half, the mavericks will fold in five. book it. the warriors just took the mavericks best shot. and still came out on top. its over. its time for consquences and repurcussions! 67 wins. worthless. the mavericks are 1-3. thats the only record that matters right now.

The Warriors played a half-court set style of basketball for a majority of the game, the Dallas stars were hitting big shots, buts the Warriors fought from behind to pull off the upset. The perimeter defense was amazing forcing long shots and turnovers that led to easy fast break points. Pietrus and Barnes filled the gap for Harrington and Monta while J Rich and Jackson continued there consistent play. But is all about BARON! Props to Oracle fans staying roudy and props to the whole organization. Warriors will close this series on Tuesday!!! BIGGEST UPSET EVER taking place in the YAY MAN

We'll see Phoenix in the western conference finals. Baron against Nash!?!?!? We'll see who the real MVP is. Go Warriors!!!

Golden State should just be cautious...they should not let Dallas take the series to a Game 7...or else they might be doomed...
What I like about Golden State is that they now have gotten to Dallas' head...and it seems that they've taken almost everything the Mavs can offer...The Warriors have the mental edge now and should go for the kill on Game 5...

Still no dap for the Warriors from Kerr or Barkley. What have these guys seen in this series that makes them think Dallas still has a chance? Dallas got beat down in two games playing the Warriors uptempo style and they even lost game 4 after controlling the entire pace of the game. They need to stop looking at the Dallas lineup and 67 regular season wins and start realizing the Warriors just match up better against the Mavs. It hasn't been a string of good luck that has gotten the Warriors the 3-1 lead, it has been better play.

The Warriors are the hottest team in the NBA now with 9-1 in the last 10. We are like the Suns except we have a point guard that can actually play defense. All the NBA analysts are picking the Mavs still, which is still unbelievable. Take a risk and believe that the underdogs have closed the deal. Don't bring up history with the Suns-Lakers series last year because it's totally different situations. The Lakers had one good player(Kobe), while the Warriors' whole starting line-up can light it up(minus Biedrins). Instead of shutting down one player, the Mavs have to shut down at least 4.

I guess Dwayne Wade was right...Nowitzki runs to hide under the table when it's time to be a leaser, like a German poodle. The Mavs are toast.

I am on the GSW bandwagon!!! Way to go Warriors. Honestly I didn't give them much of a shot prior to the playoffs but they have definitely earned my respect. Plus they are an exciting, fun team to watch. It has been great to watch teams like the Warriors, Bulls and Suns win with an athletic, fast paced style of basketball. Now if we can just get rid of the Spurs we will actually have some games worth watching in the near future.
    Go SUNS!!!
