Ball Don't Lie - NBA

The picture to the right has the "UC" in "UCLA" obscured, but it seemed appropriate.

Baron Davis will be a Clipper. He's reported to have verbally agreed to a five-year 65 million dollar deal with Los Angeles, a team that has no doubt renounced Corey Maggette's rights, which allows Baron to play in the town that he grew up in.

All my thoughts on the potential deal from early this morning still stand, but I do have to give Davis this: Baron is taking less money to play in a situation that he feels comfortable in. That's not typical.

Whether it's the Clipper coaching staff, the location of the franchise, his proximity to the movie business that he's thrown so much money at over the last few years, or his relationship with fellow class if 1999 draftee Elton Brand, Davis is choosing a contented run over a guaranteed 17.8 million dollar payday next year. That's significant. It's also not saying much about the Golden State Warriors.

Make no mistake, the man is still going to be compensated quite handsomely to say the least, and if winning was his most important cup of tea he could have moved on to Boston or the Lakers or any other team for the mid-level exception, but he's still leaving money on the table to play where he wants to play, and that's a rare thing in this league.

*Speaking of which, less than 24 hours after declining to opt out of his contract, Kings forward Ron Artest has developed some cold feet. Artest told Marc Stein via email that, he thinks he "made the biggest mistake by staying in my contract and I have to live with it. I had some misleading information [in making the] decision on not opting out."

I can't blame the guy for getting a little nervy watching players like Gilbert Arenas and Baron Davis take to giant new contracts, but really, who out there was going to have the means or the willingness to give Artest a raise beyond the 7.4 million he's going to make in 2008-09? Chill, Ron. Chill.

*Chris Paul has agreed to a max contract extension with the New Orleans Hornets. That's a giant deal I can get behind

Maggette for Davis. Great!!! Davis is better than Arenas.Davis, Gordon, Brand, Thornton, Kaman, Sweet!!! Maybe Nelson should not have benched Davis that last game. Sorry bay area,Baron is going to make Thornton and Gordon stars! The Clippers picked up 10 wins if Davis stays healthy. If the get Livingston healthy with Cutino Mobley on the second unit with Nick Fazekas, Great pick-up, now there are two shows in town!

Way to go Clips......great money spent when he injures himself again. Only reason he lasted 82 games last year was because Nelson had him running.
Funny...there have always been two shows in town: The Lakers and The Sparks.

5 years and $65 mil... yeah that says something about the Warriors. That they're not stupid enough to throw $65 mil at a guy with an injury history and who is getting further from his prime every day.
Clippers bid against themselves and overpaid. They'll be better for a couple years, but will regret this capital outlay for longer than that.

Lakers and Sparks, that's funny! Maybe he will get a personal trainer, loose some weight, and get lucky for once. how can he be overpaid, when he took a 5mil. pay cut? If he stays healthy, it's a steal. It's half of what Arenas is getting. What is Chris Paul being offered?

Dwyer, you nitwit...you need to go back to 2nd grade to learn 'greater than', "less than". How is $65mil less than $17.5mil? Nobody but the Clips were going to give Baron $13mil a year for 5 years - his injury history & age are huge deterrents. They might offer more per year for fewer years, or less money per year for 5 years.
I applaud Baron. He revived the W's in his 3 & 1/2 years there, then took the best offer available without burdening the W's with a hefty salary for a prematurely aging injury-prone player. I'll give him a standing O every time the Clips come to Oracle as a huge thanks!

Warriors fans may be hurt now... but don't despair... It'll be Baron that'll be hurt later when it counts... During the season when the Clips need him most. Baron had one healthy year out of his stint with the W's and I don't see him having another one without coming to play next season in great shape AND cutting down his minutes so he lasts 82 games or as close to it as his body will allow...
What's done is done... The W's need to move on... re-sign Biedrins and Monta Ellis and see who comes up in free agency or trades that can help this team get past the 50 game win mark and past the 2nd round of the play offs...

Guess this was inevitable but it blows regardless. That run two years ago will always carry ALOT of weight with me... but this is on some carpetbagging ish. Reportedly sticking around, then to the Clippers in less than 24 hours? Laaaaame. I wouldn't have given him five years either. We're not gonna contend the next two years at least. And with SA and the Suns looking potentially done, the Lakers looking soft in the Finals... you never know what we coulda pulled off this coming year. Now we're rebuilding. Nelson must be thrilled to be coming back now.
As a Warriors fan I'm really wondering how hard Baron partied the night before he stunk up the joint and got benched against Phoenix. If he wasn't in shape for a game like that he's not the leader you'd want, but if Nelson was just punking him he probably set the franchise back five years in one stroke.

baron davis basically screwed the warriors in doing all this at the last minute and in less than two days. if the warriors knew this on draft day, they would have used their picks and their 10 million trade exception to help improve their team. they are now stuck with a project pick in anthony randolph and no trade exception. the warriors now have little choice but to rebuild. and don nelson will not be happy about that. the warriors can be great in about two years, if they can find a solid coach (avery johnson maybe). but baron davis pretty much just killed the 08-09 golden state warriors. poor fans. as if they haven't had enough anguish to deal with in the past 14 years.

Warriors management are and always have been idiots.
Nelson with Chris Webber the FIRST TIME around is perfect example. Gilbert Arenas and Jamison are also examples.
Baron did what he HAD to do to get the Warriors respect. He was and still IS worth taking a chance on a 5 year deal. After all, How many SELLOUT games did the warriors have before he came?
How long again was it before BoomDizz came that they had made the playoffs?
How much money was made by the franchise BY making the playoffs?
With BD, the warriors would have AGAIN made the playoffs.
Make no mistake, without BD, even WITH Don Nelson the warriors will not be playoff OR 50 win capable.

Let the Arenas to Warriors rumours heat up. Jamison did re-up ,so that might be enough for Arenas to stay in Wash.

The Clips fill their greatest need with B. Diddy - a veteran PG, physical, fearless clutch scorer. As solid as Brand is, he never sought the spotlight and would too often shrink in big moments, late.
To take that next step, they need to AXE DumbLeavy. I'd hire Ex-Clipper Mark Jackson, he was a cerebral player and a good communicator... not to mention another Guard from the 80s ala Rivers, Scott, McMillan, A. Johnson, Theus, Skiles... who turned out to be great coaches.

Can't really fault Baron for the change of heart, I really believe he was planning on staying with the Warriors this season until Brand and Maggette opted out at the last second. 5 years and $50 million sounds like a good deal for both the Clips and Davis. Warriors are in full rebuild mode, would have been nice to know about this before the draft, they could have filled what's now a glaring point guard need with someone like Jerryd Bayless (sending Al Harrington back to the Pacers?). That deal with the Pistons for Rasheed and Billups is sounding pretty good right now too. Maggette? Ben Gordon? This could be a long season for the W's.

The Warriors did not let Arenas leave. The rule at the time didn't allow us to match offers for him and was changed immediately after due to the Warriors getting screwed.

MAN screw Baron for leaving us.He says he still considers the bay area home. Then why is he leaving. Baron was one of the best thing to happen to the Bay Area but he leaves as quickly as he came. Baron Davis will still have have his place in Oracle after we took care of Dallas. The clippers will do horrible next year watch. They will a injury filled season.
