Disclaimer: I'm not a huge college basketball fan. I find it
difficult to really follow living north of the border, and well, trying
to watch one or two NBA games a night puts a strain on my relationship
and limited social life as is. (You'd think a nice 'lil Thursday Bulls-Cavs game would excite the missus, you know? I mean, we're talkin' about Wally Szczerbiak here! He's so dreamy!)
But
I digress. There is no way in hell that I'm going to miss this
weekend's college ball action, and nor should you, NBA die-hard. Why?
Because this year's Final Four -- with all four No. 1 seeds making it
for the first time ever -- is absolutely loaded with NBA prospects.
At last count, DraftExpress
had eight -- well, nine if you include Russell Westbrook -- young'ns playing this weekend expected to go somewhere in
the first round of this year's draft. That's absurd.
So, with the
help of some NBA draftniks, here are nine guys you need to
keep an eye on when Memphis, UCLA, North Carolina and Kansas tip it off tomorrow. They'll be playing for the Heat, Sonics or Grizzlies soon enough.
Derrick Rose, Freshman PG, Memphis
Expected to go: 1 or 2 | NBA comparisons: Baron Davis, Dwyane Wade, Devin Harris
Talk
to me: "Rose has done everything humanly possible to make a case for
himself to be considered the #1 overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft.
While just a few weeks ago it was virtually a guarantee that Michael
Beasley would claim that spot, Rose has now, at the very least, given
NBA GMs plenty to think about before deciding to pass him up. Depending
on which team lands the top pick, and what their point guard situation
looks like, it's not ludicrous at all to suggest at this point that he
might even be the one." -- J. Givony, DraftExpress
Kevin Love, Freshman PF, UCLA
Expected to go: 5-15 | NBA comparison: David West
Talk
to me: "Love's most unique skill may be his outlet pass. When he gets
the pall, he's always looking to throw it ahead to ignite a break. His
outlet pass skill would be extremely useful in the NBA on a team that
likes to run and gun." -- Hoops Fantasy
Russell Westbrook, Sophomore PG, UCLA
Expected to go: 5-15 (could go '09) | NBA comparison: Rajon Rondo, Monta Ellis
Talk
to me: "[Westbrook]'s regarded by some as a better pro prospect than
Collison because he's taller (6-3), stronger and more athletic. He's
also a high-motor defender, but an average perimeter shooter and
questionable playmaker. 'He can help a team at the next level as a
defensive stopper,' [ESPN analyst Steve] Lavin said." -- Indy Star
Darren Collison, Junior PG, UCLA
Expected to go: 10-15 | NBA comparison: Kevin Johnson, Earl Watson (bit of a difference)
Talk
to me: "Top notch athlete with great quickness and speed at the point
guard position […] Has many of the point guard qualities you look for,
such as understanding how to control the tempo, and the ability to play
in a half court set or fast break offense." -- The Draft Review
Tyler Hansbrough, Junior PF, North Carolina
Expected to go: 15-25 | NBA comparison: Carlos Boozer, Luis Scola, Shane Battier
Talk
to me: "Hansbrough plays extremely hard on both ends of the floor ...
[but] he's not considered an elite prospect because of limited
athleticism. [...] He always makes me think of Shane Battier. Remember,
Battier played on the block as a collegian before becoming a
three-point shooting/perimeter defending glue player as a pro. I could
see Hansbrough developing a face-up game and following a similar path."
-- B. Doolittle, BP
Darrell Arthur, Sophomore PF, Kansas
Expected to go: 15-25 | NBA comparison: Antonio McDyess
Talk to me: "A skilled power forward with a tremendous package of size and athleticism ... Measures in at 6’9” 230 lbs with bigtime hops and lateral quickness ... Possesses a good handle for a player his size as well as a mid-range shot." -- NBADraft.net
Ty Lawson, Sophomore PG, North Carolina
Expected to go: 15-25 | NBA comparison: T.J. Ford
Talk to me: "A little small at 5’11” and 175, but [...] he is great in the open court and can lead the fast break as well as anyone in college. He would be a great fit for a young athletic team like Seattle or the 76ers, the Pacers (backing up Tinsley) or Kings." -- MyNBADraft.com
Chris Douglas-Roberts, Junior SG/SF, Memphis
Expected to go: 20-30 | NBA comparison: Jerry Stackhouse, Julius Hodge
Talk
to me: "At 6'7", 200 pounds, CDR is as versatile as they come. He's
able to guard almost any position on the floor and currently averages
17.7 PPG, 4.2 RPG, 1.8 APG, and 1.2 SPG. [...] The junior from Detroit
helped the Tigers reach three straight NCAA tournaments and Sweet
Sixteen appearances." -- Bleacher Report
Brandon Rush, Junior SF, Kansas
Expected to go: 20-30 | NBA comparison: Eddie Jones, Kelenna Azubuike
Talk to me: "Excellent man defender, aided by his long arms and developed body ... Defended the opposition's best player night in and night out; guarding Kevin Durant as well as anybody in their match-ups ... An excellent teammate who plays a solid all around game." -- NBADraft.net
