Mears has two top-10 finishes in 14 starts at Daytona, including a second-place in the 2006 Daytona 500. But because he is with a new team, Mears does not have a guaranteed starting spot in the 500. Instead, he must finish first or second among the go-or-go-home drivers in the second 150-mile qualifying race on Thursday.
Mears, in his first year with Richard Childress Racing, finished 21st in the point standings with four top-10 finishes. But when Jack Daniel's decided not to renew its contract with RCR, Mears was left without a ride for 2010. "Right now, the only thing that is locked in is the six-race deal with Keyed Up Motorsports," said Mears.
Mears admits he has talked to "probably just about everybody in the garage area" about his future. "There are some possibilities of some things for 2011 for sure," he adds. "I'm hoping that a lot of guys view me -- if I don't get to continue with Keyed Up Motorsports -- as the first guy on the bench that can get the job done if something opens up."
