NASCAR's drug testing policy under fire

The admission by a former second-tier NASCAR driver that he raced after taking heroin last year sparked renewed scrutiny of NASCAR's drug-testing policy Thursday. Hours before qualifying for Saturday night's NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Phoenix International Raceway, Cup driver Kevin Harvick complained at length that NASCAR's policy is too lax according to the Los Angeles Times.

He was responding to an admission by Aaron Fike, who raced in NASCAR's Nationwide and Craftsman Truck Series, that he used heroin before a truck race last summer. Fike, 25, later was arrested on suspicion of heroin possession, and NASCAR, in July, suspended him indefinitely.

NASCAR generally tests only when there is "reasonable suspicion" of drug use, but "that is not a proper professional sports drug policy," Harvick said.

He should be fired. To take herion to a amusement park where children go is not something to take lightly. To decide to do herion when you have the high paying job he has is total disrespect to the 100 other people who dream will never come true. I just found a place for one of them.

No excuse - he should be let go. It's an illegal drug and effects a driver's ability to drive a race car. At 200 mph - these guys need to be completely clean of illegal drugs that will impair their driving abilities and could result in the death of another driver. ZERO TOLERANCE. If someone wants to do illegal drugs - then stay out of a race car and become a rock star.

What's this? A new rumor.... already??
Racing on heroin?? What gave him away? Was he driving 40 mph inside the white line? The thought of someone taking drugs and putting others' lives in danger is sickening...

Listened to an interview with Rusty Wallace and he says as a team owner they have a random testing policy, I think all team owners need to do the same, they are the employers

#10...Mike M, you are right on it! Each team should have a policy in place for ANYONE who even touches one of these machines! Then, NASCAR needs to mandate a uniform policy towards violators, like duct taping them to the wall as part of the "SAFER" barrier!

If drug use was an issue in this sport I always thought it would be something more exotic. Like say Mushrooms grown on the back 40 acres of their ranches or something??
Sorry bout that.. needed so humor. DO agree that they need stronger Policy as a whole. not just team run, but as a league they sould head up the push for testing across the board. from nascar president to the guy who sells the beers trackside at a race. Works for me..

Why not test the drivers before qualifying each week, (we inspect the cars). Horses art tested before and after races. look at the baseball issue, hopefully NASCAR wises up before the racing world is shocked even more. For the money involved and safety of others I certainly would not mind a drug test as being mandatory before and / or after a race. This drug culture needs to be kept out of our sport!!

Yes,,, Fike has a second chance to live a clean life! He is responsible to his family and friends that have supported him. BUT Nascar racing, NO. They're too many young men that live clean lives and have worked they're butts off to have a chance to race. Fike thru that away when he CHOSE to endanger his life, the other drivers on the track, his crew, all the guys on pit road,,,,

NASCAR does not have the responsibility to give someone who can not follow the law a second chance. NASCAR's first responsibility is to protect drivers from physical harm - including harm from irresponsible drivers.

Stifler, It is hard to see someone you know go thru a time like this. I have watched a friends son go thru drug addiction. stand by them. Fike does deserve a second chance, but only if he can prove to Nascar he is clean. I wish him and his family well.

Shame on Nascar, you do not have a drug policy! You say you are for families to watch, enjoy, and take part in events. SHAME SHAME on you. In this day and age not to actively random test drivers is stupid!!! What are you afraid of????? This is an issue that will lose you families of fans.....No excuses start random testing immediately you big cowards................

Tests can give a false positive, specially if you are on prescription drugs. When a drive has a bag cold, they make take a decongestive which might register as a drug user. Maybe they should take my grandmothers remedy, mix a shot of whiskey with some honey. It always worked for me, hiccup, hiccup, well, maybe not.
