A Win for Dale Earnhardt Jr. Would Be Big in More Ways Than One: Fan View
Like the rest of Junior Nation, I've been waiting since Father's Day of 2008, nearly four years ago, for Dale Jr. to take the checkered flag again. While that win itself ended a 76 race winless streak that Dale Jr. had at the time, that number pales in comparison to his new and seemingly never ending winless streak.
There is no doubt that Dale Jr. wants to get back to victory lane for himself, his fans and to silence his critics. But, should he win this season before any other driver on the Hendrick Motorsports team, his win will mean much more than breaking a long winless streak.
199 and Counting for Hendrick
Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports, has been in NASCAR racing since the '80s and got his first team win with Geoff Bodine in Martinsville in 1984. Since then, he has built a race team that has produced ten NASCAR Championships and 199 wins. So, the next driver to win for Rick Hendrick will be the driver who gives the organization win number 200.
Special for Dale Jr. Fans and Dale Jr.
A win by Dale Jr. would be special to many fans, including me. I'm personally tired of hearing how he can't win and only has a ride because of his last name. A quick victory would silence that mess for a little while at least. But, to win the 200th victory for Hendrick Motorsports would likely be more special to Dale Jr. then it would be to any of us in Junior Nation.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. has never hidden the fact that Rick Hendrick is an important part of his life. Giving a man who he respects so much a win of this caliber would be special to Dale Jr. for sure.
Dale Jr. Has a Chance
Coincidentally, the next Sprint Cup race takes the drivers back to where it all began for the Hendrick Motorsports winning tradition: Martinsville Speedway. While Dale Jr. has never won there before, he does have four short track victories in his career and nine top five finishes at Martinsville.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. has a legitimate chance to win the next race for Hendrick Motorsports whether it comes at the next race or a race or two later. Of the four drivers on the team this season, Dale Jr. is doing the best thus far and is sitting 3rd in the Sprint Cup Championship standings. So, with a little luck and a lot of hard driving, Dale Earnhardt Jr. just might be the driver to bring home number 200 for Rick Hendrick and Hendrick Motorsports.
Jimmy Collins has been a loyal fan of NASCAR since he was a child attending races watching Dale Earnhardt run the famous number 3. He still attends numerous races each season and enjoys writing about NASCAR, particularly in regards to Dale Earnhardt as well as Dale Earnhardt Jr.
