Hollywood Casino Opens New Facility at Kansas Speedway: A Fan’s Reaction
Hollywood Casino opened its newest location to great fanfare. The casino now has a location next to the Kansas Speedway. NASCAR stars Clint Bowyer and Kasey Kahne were on hand for the grand opening festivities. Though it just opened on Friday, February 3, 2012, there are already plans to expand its operations to include a hotel. The large casino has an excellent view over the racetrack. From the higher levels of the casino, turn two of Kansas Speedway is clearly visible. To some, this is just one more component to making Kansas Speedway a top level venue in the world of NASCAR.
Kansas Speedway has a lot to look forward to in the coming years. The track will be getting a second NASCAR Sprint Cup race in 2012, which will be a great boon to the area and the new casino. The next year, in 2013, it is expected that the track will be hosting its first Grand-Am race.
Kansas Speedway had been in the works since 1997. After construction began in 1999, tickets went on sale for certain seats. The next year, major racing organizations, including the Indy Racing League and NASCAR began to announce that they would be bringing races to the track starting in 2001. The track was finally ready for racing that year. The track has been a hit ever since the first NASCAR Sprint Cup race took the field and Jeff Gordon got the checkered flag back in September of 2001. In 2011, Hollywood Casino and NASCAR made an agreement for the casino to sponsor an annual race at Kansas Speedway for the next ten years starting in 2011.
Perhaps by being so close to the track and enjoying the benefits of the track, Hollywood Casino will not only be encouraged to continue with sponsorship of the race, but to also increase its presence. If the casino wants to capitalize on the race, it should do something to help the race as well. Overall, it seems like an odd pair because NASCAR seems to be trying to put on a more or less family-friendly image. Yet a casino is very far from that family-friendly image. This would seem to open the door for a discussion or publicity about the dangers of gambling addiction and hopefully, NASCAR or the track will be a part of the publicity or discussion. Gambling addiction is a very real problem.
Kristin Watt has been a NASCAR Winston Cup, now Sprint Cup, fan for as long as she can remember starting way back when she was a little girl and her mother would sit on the couch with her every Sunday during the season to watch the races. Back then, they were fans of Bill Elliott and newcomer Davey Allison.
