Newman Uninjured After Spectacular Crash

TALLADEGA, Ala. – Stewart-Haas Racing driver Ryan Newman walked away from a frightening crash with five laps to go in Sunday’s Amp Energy 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Talladega Superspeedway.
Newman was running in the top 20 as the laps wound down. Newman was drafting behind teammate and co-owner Tony Stewart down the backstretch when Stewart ran up quickly on the car in front of him.
As Stewart slowed, Newman moved in on Stewart and slowed, too. Behind them, Marcos Ambrose darted up to Newman’s No. 39 Chevrolet as the three cars got together.
Newman’s car darted left and spun backward, with the air lifting the rear of the car in the air, and it flipped over, slamming on the hood of Kevin Harvick’s car.
Newman then slid up the track on his roof and smacked the SAFER barrier in Turn 3. The car slid down the track and then flipped in the grass before landing on its roof.
NASCAR and safety officials got to the crippled car, and after a few minutes, turned the car over with a wrecker.
The roof had to be cut open, and Newman was able to climb out. He said the upper roll cage crushed down to his helmet but he was checked at the infield care center and released.
"Sore," Newman said when asked how he was. "Just really disappointed. We had that race back there in the spring and complained about cars going over … I wish NASCAR would do something. It was a boring race for the fans. That's not something anybody wants to see."
