Newman flips, then fumes over NASCAR's restrictions

  • Print

Ryan Newman admitted he was physically sore after a wild end-over-end backflip down Talladega Superspeedway's backstretch in the closing laps of Sunday's Amp Energy 500. But he was just as sore about several other issues, including the propensity of the current chassis design to become airborne, the decision to eliminate bump-drafting in the turns and the overall quality of the racing product.

And he wasn't alone in his frustration.

Running in the outside lane, two-wide on the backstretch on Lap 184, Newman's No. 39 Chevrolet was bumped from behind by Marcos Ambrose, shot in front of Kevin Harvick, turned backwards and sailed through the air for several hundred feet, landing upside down on Harvick's hood. The car then skidded up the banking in Turn 3, hit the outside wall, and proceeded to do one more twist in the infield grass before coming to a stop on its roof, with Newman hanging by his shoulder belts.

"I'm just really disappointed," Newman said. "We had a race back here in the spring and complained about cars getting airborne and now, ironically, I'm the guy who gets upside-down, have the roll bars down on top of my helmet and stuck upside down. I wish NASCAR would do something."

Safety crews were able to check on Newman's condition, and after a few minutes, turned the car over onto its wheels. Then using a cutting instrument, crews cut the roll cage away, freeing Newman, who was able to walk to the ambulance under his own power.

"When I hit the roll cage and landed on my head, I was a little worried," Newman said. "I was happy to be able to walk out of that, in a roundabout way."

Newman was out of communication with his crew for much of the time, but he had a good explanation.

"It knocked the antenna off the car," Newman said. "When they rolled the car back over, the antenna wire connected and I criticized what was going on. It's no fun, it's disappointing, there's no good part of it.

"It's not even a good race for the fans—that's the bottom line—that's who we're trying to service is the fans. They can stand up and cheer when there's three [laps] to go with a green-white-checkered [finish], but that's not racing. You're supposed to be racing all day long. And I think we've lost a little bit of that luster."

Newman blamed part of the problem on NASCAR's restrictive policing of restrictor-plate races.

"It's just a product of this racing and what NASCAR's put us in, in this box with these types of cars, with the yellow line, with no bump-drafting, no passing," Newman said. "Drivers used to be able to respect each other and race around each other—Richard Petty, David Pearson, Bobby Allison, all those guys have always done that. I guess they don't think much of us anymore."

In an effort to avoid being penalized by NASCAR for aggressive driving—and to perhaps defuse the chances of a multi-car accident—drivers went the overly conservative route. On at least three occasions, the field resorted to running nose-to-tail for multiple laps.

For what it's worth, NASCAR's sanctions against bump-drafting in the turns was well-heeded, as no one was penalized for that infraction. However, neither the accident involving Newman, or the one six laps later involving 13 cars directly in front of the main grandstand—in which Chase contender Mark Martin also flipped—was anything more than the result of typical close-quarters superspeedway racing.

The second major accident, triggered when Brad Keselowski got into the back bumper of Kurt Busch, also heavily damaged the cars of Hendrick teammate Jeff Gordon and Juan Montoya. All of those involved, including Martin, were uninjured.

"It was just kind of a terrible race [Sunday] in general," said David Ragan, who ran near the front of the pack for most of the race, but was caught up in the white-flag wreck. "There was a lot of single-file racing. I know it's exciting there at the end, but what happens is NASCAR slows these cars down.

"They're too easy to drive and everyone just gets kind of crazy. It's a shame to tear up a lot of good race cars like that for kind of being stupid, but that's restrictor-plate racing. I'm glad we only have to do it three or four times a year."

Brian Vickers said he still isn't sure what the crackdown on bump-drafting was hoping to deter.

"If the intent was to prevent a crash, obviously it's not going to do that," Vickers said. "We crash as much in the straightaway here as we do in the corner."

But what's the alternative? Elliott Sadler honestly doesn't know.

"I think NASCAR and all the drivers should sit in a private room, lock the doors and have a discussion and try to fix this together," Sadler said. "That's what I'd like to see."

In any case, Newman was less than pleased, and expected that many in attendance felt the same way.

"It was a boring race for the fans," Newman said. "That's not something anybody wants to see, at least I hope not. If they do, go home because you don't belong here."

Every single comment posted here has been so negative. And I wholeheartedly agree with every one of them. I noticed some of you speaking of boycotting. Sounds pretty good. I know that by expressing our opinions to the public that maybe NASCAR would listen. Yea, right! Go ahead and continue to say it all here on these racing websites, but I was wondering--What if we all copied and pasted our comments in an email and send them straight to NASCAR. Just bomb the hell out of NASCAR. One guy said they don't read these sites and don't even give a crap. So lets clog up their inbox. They would have to sit up and take notice don't you think? We shouldn't have to put up with this crap. Well right now there sitting behind desks in dark rooms and counting their money with that sinister smile and then laughing all the way to the bank. I wonder if they have noticed the money has most likely been dwindling--I mean enough to make a sizeable dent? I saw lots of empty seats at Dega. Blame it on the economy. Well NASCAR you can think what you want but when the economy becomes strong again and the money hasn't improved then you'll take notice but it will obviously be too late. If you guys have tickets to tracks and are seriously thinking about giving up your seats then send the tickets to NASCAR let them see people are serious about abandoning what was once a great sport. We all have to work together and maybe something good will happen. Good luck out there in whatever you decide to do.

RONALD: Your comment about "new" posters and being women was uncalled for! I've been watching Nascar since the mid-1960's when I was rooting for King Richard and Bobby Allison! Don't make assumptions you can't back up

I am sooo done with Nascar....I was raised with Nascar, but I have gone to my last race and won't be watching any longer....the Frances and Helton have ruined the sport for me and anyone that remembers what it used to be. It's so sad to watch something you love die a slow aginizing death at the hands of idiots.

There are a few good things about being a soldier in Afghanistan this year. Just to mention a few; a break from watching boring ass racing, watch the cookie cutter expert win his 4th "ten race" championship on tracks that the average fan could race on in the COT, watch NASCAR manipulate the races through bull@#$% cautions, and listen to the announcers kiss the asses of Helton and France. I could go on and on. Hey media, grow some B#@$% and hold this sport accountable!!!

I have been a fan since 1985. The past 5 years I've watched only the short tracks. How anyone can watch or attend these 1 1/2 cookie cutter races is beyond my comprehension. I would rather watch pond water! Real NASCAR fans are sick of this @#$%!!! JJ has won 4 championships in the same amount of races it took #3 & #43 to win 1 each. Now that's a damn joke!!!!

Oh well, God bless America. It's still the greatest nation on the Planet. Can't wait to get back to Her!

Attendance at the races is down; TV ratings are down; the message boards are alive with screaming, frustrated fans. When are you gutless wonders in the media going to get off your butts and *challenge* Helton et al? Stop fawning all over him and his cronies. Report the *facts* and demand answers from this so-called brain-trust. Pemberton actually had the audacity to say that NASCAR was "pleased" with yesterday's race...and, not a single member of the so-called media had the courage to say, "excuse me, what race? We saw a parade."

The media needs an injection of courage to challenge King Helton...and, the fans are going to have to start voting with their wallets...by NOT going to the races or watching on TV. Attendance keeps falling and the ratings keep going down, eventually, *maybe*, it'll sink in to the idiots running NASCAR into the ground.

its the wing people, it only makes sense if the car is designed to go forward to keep down force on the rear and it does a 180,it will make it to do just the opposite fly !!simple aviation fundamentals Lift, I don't get it?? " Robin Hood Pemberton", "Mikey Boy Helton," and" Baby face France" should find new jobs. we need a change of the guard, their watch is now been expired. I truly dislike where NASCAR has gone since the 3 was here.I wasn't a 3 fan either. just noticed how it has become boring ZZZZZZZ!!! since he has been gone. We can't go backwards [I understand} however the Earndharts, Elliots, Wallace,Pearson,Petty,Yarlborough,Waltrip, and all the racers before them I can't mention for readership ability, those guys made NASCAR what it was 5 yrs ago!!!!!!!!! top of the heep and now where are we?? ruled out!!! from week 2 week what a terrible SHAM. Just give us a 35 lap feature like the Saturday Nite guys, charge us appropriately for value received. Thats about all we are getting now the way things are going. I for one, miss the way it use to be. NASCAR however, will miss my bucks at the gate. Its about time they started paying attention. I get 5 times the competition at New Smyrna Speedway, for 20 bucks. Short tracks should thrive with the demise of "organized" racing.

NASCAR doesn't give a crap about anything fans think or write about on this site. They don't care about the drivers or teams either. It's just a money thing and NASCAR loves having the power to do what it wants no matter what any of us think. The only time I watch NASCAR racing anymore is if there's not a good Western on the tube. Screw NASCAR. I always thought racing was to beat the other guy and to go as fast as you could. All restrictor plates do is piss off drivers and fans. If they can run 200+ miles per hour and get spread out instead of bunching up for the big one, then let them do it.

For them to ban bump-drafting, a super-speedway restrictor plate classic feature for making racing better and more fun to watch, is NASCAR's worst call ever. Ya its a safety measure but if the drivers don't even like then you have a problem. I was watching it and they turned Tony Stewart's radio on for a minute and he even said, "Hey, can you turn on the radio or something to keep me from falling asleep, Im getting pretty bored out hear." He said that going 200 mph around Dega! Even the announcer said, "I wanna see more action right now, not this single file racing." NASCAR just isn't what it used to be even 5 year ago. This was the only race I watched from beginning to end this year mainly because its one of my favorite tracks because of the close racing, but I was very disappointed to hear at the last minute about the ban. They better not do that at Daytona or the attendance is going to shrink very fast!

I'm giving up my tickets for 'dega that I have had for 10+ years. I guess that is the only way NASCAR will listen anymore. Others must have the same idea because there were more empty seats Sunday than I've ever seen. NASCAR quit screwing with everything and let the drivers race.

This was one of the most boring races I have ever seen. Have followed NASCAR for over 50 years and there is no comparison today with the races of yesteryear. Bill France has to be turning over in his grave at the way it is handled today. Fans are the only one to boycott and get changes made. Owners and drivers have too much invested. I have quit attending races and about ready to quit watching.

I can't believe how long it took for the rescue crew to flip Newman's car back over. You've got 15 guys standing around trying to hookup a tow truck to lift the car, etc. It was a joke. Just have 8 guys lift the car and push it over for god's sake! When Michael Waltrip ended up on his roof at Daytona a few years ago, he had to scream at the rescue workers to just flip the damn car over. They finally did and he was able to get out. I thought Nascar would have learned from that but I guess not.

Yeah I to am just about done with Nascar racing? I never liked the IROC race when they would do that during the year. Now it is IROC every week. Maybe they should reverse things and have a Stock car race thrown in now. Done with Nascar Fantasy racing to. I love racing so it looks like the local dirt track will get my attention from now on. If i can still find on that is.

It's a sad day when the race is more boring than the pre and post race coverage. I don't want to see anyone get hurt, but I would like to see some racing. It was boring and it hurt a lot of good drivers' chances to beat boring JJ. It is fitting that JJ is going to get his fourth championship this year. Nascar is boring and he is their poster child.

Boycott Nascar? Would be a great idea, unfortunatley the "new" fan base is a bunch of posers, mostly women who have fallen for the pretty boys and pretty paint schemes. It has become a politiclly correct venue. Much Harley Davidsons that were bought up by yuppies. Those of us that were fans back in the day saw real racin and the talents of real race car drivers. The only good thing that came out of this weekend is the racers themselves made their thoughts known. I thought it was great when "smoke" told his crew to keep him awake.

Good news is AMA supercross starts soon, I can get back to seeing some real men and women race real machines, where bumping and brake checks are not only part of the racing, but expected!

Been a Fan for many many years... But I lost interest a few years ago gave up my season tickets to Both Bristol and Richmond because when you get bored at either of those tracks its time to return to the dirt tracks on a Saturday night and see real racing...and actually get my fix...

Get rid of the rear wings on the cars... who needs down force...let the drivers figure out what speeds they can take a corner....Heck. mandate 6:70x 15 tires if necessary.... but please put the cars back into the hands of drivers then we can see who knows how to "wheel" his car...

Sorry but Nascar honestly does not race anymore...

NASCAR may think they are doing the right thing because they still have a decent fan base, but it would be in their best interest to make changes before they wake up and realize that their fan base is deteriated. Because then it would be too late and the sponsers and networks will no longer care and NASCAR in any form will be obsolete.
