McMurray wins as wrecks again mar finish at 'Dega

  • Print

For the first time since July 7, 2007, Jamie McMurray found himself in the right place at the right time.

Jimmie Johnson, on the other hand, can't seem to put himself in a wrong position—even when he thinks he has.

McMurray was at the front of the field in Sunday's Amp Energy 500 at Talladega Superspeedway when the inevitable Big One, a 13-car wreck off Turn 4, caused the sixth caution of the race and froze the running order with just more than one lap left. All McMurray had to do was complete the white-flag lap to claim his first Cup Series victory since he edged Kyle Busch by .005 seconds at Daytona in 2007.

Johnson, the series points leader, wallowed around in the back of the field for most of the afternoon, but a fortuitous stop for fuel under caution for Ryan Newman's unnerving crash on Lap 185 helped him get to the finish line past a score of cars that either wrecked or ran out of gas.

Johnson leaves Talladega with a 184-point advantage over second place Mark Martin, whose car hurtled through the air, flipped and slammed into the frontstretch wall during the final melee on an otherwise ho-hum day—thanks to a stern prerace warning against bump-drafting and push-drafting from NASCAR—that turned ugly in the closing laps at the 2.66-mile superspeedway.

Kasey Kahne overcame a start from the rear of the field because of an engine change to finish second. Rookie Joey Logano came home third. Because of the late caution for the wreck during which Newman's Chevrolet flip once end-over-end and landed on its roof, the race went three laps beyond its scheduled distance of 188 laps, and McMurray was one of many drivers worried about running out of fuel.

"I saw the guys wreck behind me, and I didn't know if you had to take the white [flag] in order [to win the race]—I wasn't real sure what the rules were—and the 9 [Kahne] went to the outside because he saw the same issue, but I just moved up and kind of tried to block him," said McMurray, who won the third Cup race of his career. "As soon as I crossed the start/finish line, I shut the engine off and pushed the clutch in and coasted around as far as I could."

As late as the final restart, which took place on Lap 190 after a 12-minute, 34-second red-flag period for Newman's wreck, Johnson was resigned to a finish in the 20s, where he was running after pitting for fuel right before NASCAR threw the red flag.

"From where we were with the red flag to where we finished—I'm still in shock," said Johnson, who can clinch his record fourth consecutive title by finishing 10th or better in the final three races in the Chase for the Sprint Cup. "I can't believe that it worked out. I can't believe that that many guys ran out of fuel and put themselves in that position. We almost stayed out.

"It was such a relief to finish and make up points. … I do feel bad that the guys crashed coming to the finish, and we got wrecked cars. I was really concerned for Mark, because when I looked in the mirror I saw the 5 roof number tumbling and flipping and then it hit the outside fence. I hate to see things take place that way.

"So the crash part, yeah. But making up points on them, that's what we're here to do. I wish it would have been under fuel circumstances not under a crash, for sure. But we'll take them."

@ #8 so you would award 100 points to some track filler in the rear 100 pts, if there's a caution on lap 24, and he stay old to lead a lap, at lap 25, 50, or whatever, I'm sure glad your not setting up the point system. That just as stupid as Nascar awarding those same drivers 5 pts for learing a lap on a caution, or teammates letting another teammate lead for a lap then retaking the lead, a rule which Nascar should change.

#8's suggestion is the best idea I've heard in years!

Maybe not 100 points, but a fair amount to make leading worth it.

that was the worst talladega race I've ever seen. Refuse to watch another if they keep the new rule in effect. Which did no good any way since the major wrecks where caused by people breaking in fear of getting penalized. Single file racing at talladega??? whats the point??

Plus the added laps was a joke and only there to help out 48. They stated one lap to green, some guys ran out of fuel then extended it; pointless. If the caution wouldn't of come out they never would of finished, just caused the ones up front who should of made it to waste more fuel.

Been a race fan for over 20 years, but going to take some changes to make me want to ever watch another race. It's worse then basketball now.

NASCAR SUCKS!!! I just hope the ratings and fans keep dropping and maybe the sponsors will dry up. DEATH TO NASCAR as it is today!!! Maybe they will raise it to what it was like in the late 80's and 90's. Want to see real racing visit your local dirt track for real time racing.

How NASCAR turned this sport into a boring drive around all day was bad enough, that it did not stop the "Big One" and changed the outcome of the race and possibly the chase was a disgrace!

NASCAR is a deaf organizaion that caters to the major money of the big teams (like Hendricks) and will not jeopardize that!!! regardless of the fans that without a doubt pay for the sport...lets see now...if no one watched or showed up they would be begging the public for help...perhaps they should listen to those who really keep them afloat...without the fanbase they would have nothing!!! and they are doing their best to chase everyone away

Well it seems that NASCAR has finally taken the RACE out of racing! Ol' chief Stooge M. Helton will have them on tricycles doing 50 yard dash before long. They wonder why the fans and the TV audiences are leaving.....look at todays "race". I gues Helton got what he wanted (besides nearly killing Newman), A NON-RACE with a yellow flag finish. Mike go trade your pink panties in on a one way ticket to Formula One where all the rest of the SWEETIES are. BORING!!!!!!!!!

Reward the leader with one point every lap. No one else gets anything. Watch how fast everyone tries to get to the front.

Only problem is Jimmie would be leading by about 1,000 points right now.

Make it a 30 lap race and it would be an improvement. Or eliminate the plates and brace the fences, let them race full tilt. But they really do need to get with the crew chiefs, drivers, owners and figure out how to come up with what they need to put on a good race. Can't believe I took the day off to watch this race today.

what they need to do is award 100 points for the leader on lap 25-50-100-125 that would make them race all day.

Yea, i'd like to see the scoring sheets on this one too! But first let me thank NASCAR for another wonderfully boring race. The drivers really don't like riding around in circles only to be able to "race" the last 20 laps of the day. No touchy, no feely equals one boring race. What happens to "tradin' paint" rock & roll and bouncing off the wall? Cookie cutter cars, too long of a race, and way too many rules & regulations. Will they (NASSCAR) ever wake up? Will there ever be stock car races or have they too gone the way of the dinosaur? i really do miss stock car races, have now for quite a few years.

Waltrip and Sadler figured out how to beat Jimmie. They passed him during the last caution before the start finish line and NASCAR let them have it.

    Mark, Jeff,

Next time top off on fuel like the 48 so you don't run out, have to pit, then get behind caught up in the last wreck.

Easy you finish in the top ten (8th) and everyone else in the chase with the exception of Kasey Kahne finish worse than 20th that is how.
Don’t run out of gas because you can't win in the pits.

    GO Team 48.........
