Johnson continues to sag in popularity despite titles

Jimmie Johnson's representatives at CAA Sports are calling his upcoming appearance on the HBO Sports series 24/7 the centerpiece in their efforts to provide the NASCAR driver with increased exposure.

CAA Sports signed Johnson, 34, in January 2008 and his appearance on 24/7, which will begin airing in late January and lead up to the Daytona 500 in February, marks the agency's first strike in an effort to spice up Johnson's vanilla image.

It is CAA's hope—and HBO's, too—that the behind-the-scenes series will reshape the perceptions many have developed in Johnson's nine-season NASCAR career. His backers assure that viewers will discover a more compelling figure than the one who wins with cold-blooded precision, but fails to generate much in the way of passion among the fans.

"With Jimmie, the criticism is a lot like what Roger Federer gets," said CAA's Michael Levine. "All he does is win."

But while Federer's brand has evolved into fashion and a global reach, Johnson's remains relatively limited to performance in the NASCAR world, even though he's on the verge of winning an unprecedented fourth consecutive Cup Series championship.

Despite that on-track dominance, Johnson's profile really hasn't transcended the sport. It hasn't even changed that much among NASCAR fans, according to the Davie-Brown Index, which measures a celebrity's attributes. The latest index doesn't have Johnson in the top five among NASCAR drivers in appeal. It remains difficult to attach a brand attribute to Johnson that goes beyond what he's done on the track, say sports marketers.

"Performance doesn't equal personality," said David Grant, a founding principal of Velocity Sports & Entertainment. "Jimmie's not a redneck, he's not a freak, he's not controversial, he's not a jerk. In fact, he's a really nice guy. He's always proper, he always says the right thing, but that's not what people want to talk about."

When Johnson selected CAA 22 months ago, he charged the agency with developing new and different opportunities, the kinds of things other drivers aren't doing. It's taken awhile, but the appearance on 24/7 was the kind of thing he had in mind. CAA also is working on a Johnson-branded video game that he is developing with an unnamed gaming company, a deal the agency arranged.

"I do think there is some growth that is yet to come, because there's just beginning to be the type of appreciation from the general sports fan for what he's accomplished," Levine said. "It's taken a little longer than I would have expected or liked. … He's separated himself from the other drivers on the track, and he wants to do the same thing off the track."

Johnson's approach to endorsements has never been to take quantity over quality. Lowe's has been a longtime sponsor of his No. 48 car at Hendrick Motorsports and the two are expected to formalize an extension soon, a deal that costs the building supply retailer more than $20 million annually.

Johnson is often featured in ads for Lowe's Kobalt Tools brand and he was a central figure in Gatorade's "League of Clutch" campaign two years ago. He also has personal endorsement deals with Tylenol, Sunoco, Gargoyles sunglasses and Bank of America, through its affinity credit-card program The challenge with Johnson, though, is broadening his fan base beyond those who simply appreciate his driving skills and arousing the casual fans enough to make them care about his fourth consecutive title chase.

Mike Mooney, a vice president in Charlotte-based Millsport's racing division, said Johnson's appeal with fans doesn't measure up to his on-track performance. Millsport and its parent company, The Marketing Arm, manage the Davie-Brown Index, which rates Johnson well in awareness but not in appeal. "In a sport where you have so many different personalities, some wear them on their sleeve and some don't," Mooney said. "Jimmie is a very personable guy, but he also comes across as private."

The 24/7 series will give viewers that behind-the-curtain look that will introduce them to a fun-loving, wise-cracking guy, his friends say, which is why the exposure he'll receive from the series could boost his future marketability, while also providing NASCAR with a much-needed jolt of energy.

"The end goal is to show people who Jimmie is and what his lifestyle is about," said John Lewensten, vice president of operations for Jimmie Johnson Racing and the driver's right-hand man. "For the people who really know him, it's hard for us to understand how people think he's vanilla. We've had the media spend time with him away from the track and there have been some articles done, but nothing like this format.

"I'm confident the more people learn about Jimmie, the more they'll become fans. And if the by-product is that Jimmie becomes more marketable in the process, that's great."

24/7 isn't an income producer for Johnson. HBO Sports does not pay either Johnson or NASCAR for its access, although it will pay NASCAR Media Group for its production work.

What the series can do for Johnson, though, is verify what his supporters have been saying all along, that there's more to the greatest winning force in NASCAR than the polite smile he flashes every time he lifts a trophy in Victory Lane.

Ross Greenburg, president of HBO Sports, said the network's documentary-style shows have the ability to change perceptions because of the inside access they receive. That was the case in this year's NFL training camp series Hard Knocks with Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chad Ochocinco.

"Chad is a fun-loving, affable, dedicated athlete and the show blew the doors off the old perception of him," Greenburg said. "That will happen with Jimmie. Characters will come out of this show."

At the end of the Chase for the past 3 years JJ has taken home the hardware and it appears that he is getting ready to add a 4th to his trophy case. Piss and moan about how unmarketable he is all you want, I'm guessing that if he was really THAT boring all of his detractors would not be here reading/@#$%ing about him. He is doing what all of the other drivers wish they could do: Win when it counts. And until somebody can knock him off of the top of the mountain he is the king of said mountain. Get used to it. And if/when NASCAR decides to do away with the Chase format as it is today, the driver that is the most consistent when the Chase starts will continue to take home the Cup. And if memory serves me correctly that has been JJ and the #48 car. For the past 3 years. Kind of looks like 4 years right now doesn't it?

I don't really have a problem with Jimmie, but I would have thought more of him if he'd been honest about how he broke his wrist a couple of years ago.

It seems like Jimmie, Chad and the gang just hang around and wait for the Chase to start and the points to reset before turning it on. I would think more highly of him (and them) if it didn't seem like they were always taking someone else's championship -- Gordon's last year and Stewart's this year. If NASCAR is going to keep this stupid Chase format, they should give a big "home field advantage" to the regular season champion -- a 25- or 50- or even a 100-point bonus.

I wish NASCAR would stop with the publicity on JR. He is a good but not great driver.

If he were great he would be winning now would he not?

Johnson is a true winner and humble yet too!

Look at where he came from in relative poverty compared to JR with the silver spoon upbringing!

nas tee car has decided to go from good ol' boys, to whinners that this and that ain't working, I have to steer the car, it won't steer itself. I don't have good air (I like that one). Hell, that rodent is the best part of a race... Wish someone would start a series and take the whole damn thing back 15 years.

I couldn't even finish reading your article because I was starting to feel ill. Seriously, what is the matter with you people? Jimmie Johnson has more class and more talent than any one of you writers could ever hope for. Just because he doesn't act like a fool and talk down about others, you think he doesn't have a personality??? I can think of some others on the circuit that have too much to say and I just tune them out. I don't know Jimmie personally, but sure would be proud to. He's a great race car driver and conducts himself in a muture and respectful manner at all times. Just ask anyone that does know him personally. He's #1 in my book!

JIMMY JOHNSON has proven to be one of the BEST bar none...He can start any where with the worst car or the best car and he always comes out on top.I am sure the money is far better than popularity with a bunch of jealous fans that picked a looser as a favorite...Jimmy and or Chad work good together and they just know how do do there job better than any one else...

I am really tired of reading about how jj and chad cheat all the time if you complainers would pay attention you would know that his car and mark martins car have been taken to the nascar r&d center twice in the last four races and they found NOTHING wrong. As for jj riding in the back all day at talledaga well thats no diffrent then a football team or a basketball team killing time on the clock to win a ballgame. So GO 48 GO TO 4 IN A ROW!

my comment was not to take anything away from jj! he is the most consistant driver i have ever seen! been watching since the mid seventies! all the rules should apply to all, all the time! i know all the teams push the limit of the rules! all should be penelized the same when they they cross the line! if nascar had done that, that would not deminish my respect for jj! the fact that all wheels are in motion to bring him 4 in a row, deminishes the respect for jj and nascar! heck! if nascar will do that, how is that jj's fault? pride! millions of $ takes all pride away!

Every Monday morning JJ takes a wad of cash winnings and deposits it in his bank account, which is undoubtedly a hell of a lot larger than any of ours. Yeah, this criticism must really be upsetting to him.

There have been some interesting observations made about JJ....here is my take from a marketing perspective. Other professional sports have athletes that do promotional work ie: Michael Jordan, even after he has been retired for a number of years. NA$CAR is different; the athlete and the car feature endorsements with large product placements ( think duPont, Budweiser, etc). Marketers take a close look at driver personality and how they relate. Lucky for JJ he is a winner, because as far as personality goes he is a "start and park" failure! Is he in commercials? Sure, Lowes and at that, the story is about "tools "( JJ included). I had to laugh when I saw that he was growing a beard ( his PR man thinks he looks "edgier""). As far as his "robotic" personality it's a shame that the idea for a robot has already been used by Kenseth.

He is one of the least fan friendly drivers as many can attest also. Saying "I dont have time" for a photo op. with a little boy dressed in the #48 gear is just plain sad. I have tried it twice with my son. For those of you that have succeeded with a photo with him or just an autograph, congradulations. Its a rarity. BTW, no, I do not approach a driver when he is busy. JJ is the only one I have encountered to be so rude.

No doubt, JJ is a prettty darn good driver. But his lack of popularity is easy to explain. Simply put, NASCAR intentionally transformed Cup racing from a contest between machines and their drivers over to a contest of personalities and JJ has not shown a distinctive personality.

That his accomplishments are not appreciated is also easy to explain. Most true fans recognize that his success is due to his TEAM.

In tennis and golf, Federer and Woods stand alone. Their success is obviously due to their own skill. Any fan who has seen Kyle Busch win thirty something times in the last two years, or watched Greg Biffle hustle a loose car, or watched JP Montoya/Marcos Anbrose/Tony Stewart get around Sonoma, knows that other drivers are equally capable to JJ.

Without Chad Knaus and Hendrick Motorsports, JJ would win and win often, but not any more often than Kyle Busch or Carl Edwards or Jeff Gordon.

JJ doesn't get credit for being the best of the best because others can reasonably make that claim. In tennis and golf, no one - fan or competitor - can claim to be better than Roger and Tiger.

Hey, I repeat: Nascar politics, cheating Chad, rich Rick.........those are the problems with the sport today. Nascar makes rules like KFC makes chicken...when they want to.....for those they want to help (paid them?).
Why does nascar throw a caution as soon as JJ is the first car a lap down? That hot dog wrapper was in the infield. When John Andretti is sideways with 40 cars headed at him, they wait until the swerving starts.
I'm a longtime Nascar fan, not a redneck (if that's bad? Who started nascar?) and would like the rules to apply the same to all and be used the same each time. As long as Helton is God almighty and has no one to answer to, this sport will continue to falter. Hope Jeremy Mayfield wins his case against Nascar. Even if he did drugs and was a long time addict, his tests were done poorley and no one gets to do another because nascar used all the samples. NASCAR POLITICS, there I said it again.

i am 70 years old and have been a race fan since the 1950, with great drivers such as pearson
allison and petty and etc but the races we have today are not worth turning the tv on for.
they have distroyed the sport, with all there rules and the drivers we hear them talking about
at each race, will never as good as the old drivers.. nascar has the rules set so certain drivers
can run at the back and win the championship. the old drivers raced and if you got in there way you
would be moved over. if a driver such as kyle bunped another driver and sent him over the wall
like they did in the old days, he would be ban from the sport....+i have three sons that were
race fans but they don't even watch racing anymore, i am at that point now.

Jimmie Johnson is a great driver. He has a great crew and great sponsors. The reason he doesn't have the fan support that Jr., Gordon, Stewart and alot of others have is simple. You see those guys everywhere. You can't go anywhere without seeing A life size Dale Jr. or Jeff Gordon. The only place you'll see Johnson is Lowes! If Coke, Pepsi or maybe Wal-mart would get behind Johnson he'd be the most popular driver hands down. Everyone loves a winner. Johnson just isn't promoted as much as the other drivers.
