JJ's insurmountable lead should be embraced by all

When it's over That's the time I fall in love again And when it's over That's the time you're in my heart again And when you go go go go I know And it never ends It never ends

Sugar Ray summed up both the offseason and the season in one verse. The NASCAR season is wrapping up (some would argue it's over, with Jimmie Johnson, Kyle Busch and Ron Hornaday merely making laps until the coronations at Homestead in three weeks) and we'll all miss the weekly rat race of the circus coming to town. But until then, it just never ends.

So it goes—much like Johnson steamrolling toward a fourth consecutive Sprint Cup Series championship. After his sixth-place finish at Talladega, this one is pretty much wrapped. The bow will come when he flips the ignition at Homestead on Nov. 22.

Until then, the magic number is 161—the maximum number of points a driver can make up (or lose) during one Cup Series race. The math: a maximum of 195 points is available (including a five-point bonus for leading a lap and a five-point bonus for leading the most laps) minus 34 points for a 43rd-place finish.

Johnson holds a Chase-era record 184-point lead after Race 33. (He was 183 points ahead of Carl Edwards at this point in 2008.) Yes, Johnson could sit out Texas and still have a 23-point lead over Mark Martin if he a) won the race; b) led a lap; and c) led the most laps.

Of course, the chances of that happening are zero. However, it's likely Johnson could have a lead in excess of 161 points after Phoenix. So just how awesome would it be for the No. 48 crew to take the green flag at Homestead, then immediately bring the car to Victory Lane and throw a 267-lap party?

For all the accolades accumulated by Johnson and for all the kudos bestowed upon him, it's time to face the facts: The dude could kick Chuck Norris' rump, and he's cooler than the Dos Equis man—if only because when he does drink beer, it's a brand common folks can pronounce.

During the next three weeks, fans should embrace the fact that Cale Yarborough's 30-year record of three consecutive series titles will fall to the wayside. Prepare yourself for a Hendrick lovefest in Victory Lane at Homestead—with Jimmie, Chandra, Mr. H, Chad Knaus & Co. reveling in champagne.

Johnson does not deserve to be castigated. He has played the hands dealt to him—old car, new car—with the deftness of a concert pianist at Carnegie Hall. His time as a champion is the result of hard work by a lot of people you wouldn't recognize, as well as a level of dedication never before seen in this sport.

As the kids today say: don't hate, appreciate. Wrap your arms around it, folks, because soon it will be over—the season and the No. 48's incredible streak. Until then, bask in the greatness. You will be among the fortunate to reminisce and say, "I remember when …"

Let us look at this in a real world format.

Jimmie Johnson will probably win his fourth Cup in a row, but it WILL NOT be a NASCAR record. Why not? Because we are now racing under a different format than when Cale won his three straight. Even Johnson's three straight DOES NOT tie Cale's because of the different format. All Johnson has to do is beat 9 or 11 other drivers, not all 42, to win in a Chase format.

Each driver drove or is currently driving in what could be considered different NASCARs. The modern record will stay with Cale Yarbrough while the Chase record will be Jimmie Johnson's.

DO NOT CONFUSE THE TWO! THEY ARE ENTIRELY DIFFERENT!

I agree with Sammer (22).... SPEED used to air all forms of racing. Now it is nothing more than the NASCAR Channel using PINKS ( which sucks without Nate and Adam ), Monster Jam ( which is ok ) and F1 to fill the Non-NASCAR voids. I used to enjoy watching the Australian V8 Supercars which is where I first saw Marcos Ambrose ( not Marcus Ambrose you idiot Dr. Jerry Punch ). They also used to air DTM, German Touring Car races. There is no lack of excitement with those races.

Nascar has let JJ and Cheater Knaus dictate how the game is going to be played. No bump draft, JJ might get a hang nail and Cheater might have to work. There's a drop of moisture in the air lets cancel qualifying and give JJ the pole. Everybody else races hard all season, JJ hangs back and races the last 10 races. "our hero" NOT!!!! Nascar is wondering how come they are losing fans, they need to take a long hard look at their program and stop changing the rules to benefit some and telling some drivers not to actually race to hard against the big guns because that doesn't look good.

Who cares, the racing is boring, thanks Nascar. Now if only the tv stations could figure that out and put other forms of racing on.

Speed used to cover other forms of racing (Rally, Australian Super V8, IHRA). Now they are just Nascar TV. If I want to see how the drivers live they should start one of those stupid Discovery shows, lets see some speed on Speed TV.

The season was officially over as of JJ finishing 6th last week.

Whatever happened to; building a car, going racing, earning points and at the end of the year the points leader --who worked all year for the points-- is declared the champion?

Oh, wait! I know what happened!

They do it that way at your LOCAL TRACKS!!

What really irks me is when writers, and NASCAR, tell me what to like. Hello! I'm a free thinking human being! Don't tell me a race was great when I didn't enjoy it. Don't tell me to like/embrace someone when I obviously can't like him. We likely enjoy different musical styles, and no amount of my "illuminating" you with facts stating how my music is more technical than yours, and its musicians are better studied and practiced will make you like it, right? Right! And you'd get tired of me if I kept badgering you with more and more facts because I insist you embrace the better musical form. No different than a person with a different religious view shouldn't tell you to embrace his religion, right? Right! Need I say more?

I don't embrace robots, no mater how skilled they are.

I wish these talking heads would quit yapping about this breaking Yarborough's record. No, it won't. He raced his ass off for three entire seasons, not 30 races. Nascar whines about the economy (it's NOT the economy stupid) and ignores its fans. Uni-body cars, three engine types, follow the leader all day. Hmmm, sound familiar? IRL, CART, F1, anyone?

Either drop this joke of a chase playoff format or make it a real playoff. Playoff teams are eliminated. After 3 races, the botton 2 are removed. After 5, another 2. After 6, another 2. The last race of the year has 2 or 3 cars left to battle it out.

Playoff teams don't get to use points earned in the last game. Sorry, they don't carry over. The Steeler's didn't get to use points earned before the Super Bowl last year. Both teams started 0-0.
After each round, 3 races, then 2 more, etc., points reset to zero.

I used to go to at least 1 race a year, at various tracks. I also used to watch every race on TV. I'm very close to becoming a former fan. Haven't been to a race in 3 years. I never watch a whole race anymore on TV. And the economy has nothing to do with it. I still have the money to travel and the time to watch. This product ain't worth spending either one on.

I don't like the new car or the chase format. As for Teledega they should have stared all 12 chase cars at the back of the pack to ensure none of them would have to contend with the "big one". Then they like the 48 could have paraded around untill after the "BIG ONE" and we might have seen a race. Eliminate the lucky dawg, eliminate points for winning the pole, leading a lap esp by staying out under yellow and most laps led. If you want to keep points...43 cars on the track at the start, winner gets 43,second place 42 so on down the line. At the end of the season most points wins.

One last thing; THE CHASE IS NOT A PLAYOFF!!!

If you want a playoff it is only between the teams in the palyoffs not everyone, all teams involved is a joke.

Have 2 races at half the distance, first is non chase teams, second is chase teams only.

Last chase team each week goes to non chase pool.

Eight races in chase. Last race has top 5 and how they finish determines the top 5 in your sport.

That is a playoff, this current chase is a joke and no where near a playoff system

Playoffs means someone goes home, so lets get real and have a playoff, If someone gets bumped from chase you might have some excitement, no points only order of finish today matters.

Your last you go home. finish first, you start first next week.

Final 5 would be a nice race to watch, I Reapeat, NO POINTS, You win you move on, very simple.

They are not that good. I am not a Tony Stewart fan, but this was his title not the 48 (number of rules violations) team. This is nothing more than a bankroll that nascar is playing in.

I do not watch any of it, a total waste of time, but some said they pitted during the Newman wreck for fuel?? Red Falg anyone one. I was told the held the red flag until after they could get the fuel they needed.

Jimmy Johnson is not that good, he is a by product of money buying everything.
Does everybody really thing he is that much better than everyone else or even that much luckier, what a load, no one is that stupid.

If they raced instead of being so nice to him he would have a few dents in it, but no one races, just follow each other around, what a bore

Nascar makes the rules, inforces the rules differently from race to race and incedent to incedent. Then they change the rules as they see fit with little or no warning. Does that seem like a good idea? This point system sucks. There's 43 drivers racing, not 12. The cars are samo, samo with wings and splitters. I checked the dealers and could not find an option for a splitter on any model, some wings could be found. Nascar has ruined the sport and they will only understand that when the money runs out. Excuses about the economy causing the empty stands is false, we just don't care about God Helton anymore and his politics.

I agree you can't 'blame' JJ and crew, they just play the game better than anyone else right now. NASCAR has to change things: 1) take off the stupid plates and let them race, make it so the drivers have to actually "Drive" the cars and not just hold the gas to the floor and hold on. Take away handling so they can't go as fast as the cars are able to go. Braking, grip, and "driving" the car would make better racing. 2) end the chase, good idea, not working, points race closer this year with-out it, win the season not the last 10 races. 3) Luck dog, you get it ONCE per race, lucky you. Using the Lucky Dog to make up 3, 4 or 5 lost laps is a joke.

    LET them RACE the race....
Go #5, Mark Martin class act and going to be second again because of the crap racing in 'Dega.

I'll tune in to watch, the last 30 laps or so... I'll just see when NASCAR is suppose to go off the air and about an hour to go, flip over to see what's going on.. if Jimmie is leading or somewhere in the top-ten, and the other chase contenders still in the hunt or either DNF, wrecked, or just way back in the pack, I flip back to football and enjoy the rest of that game.

I gotta agree with Iron here, JJ's championships just aren't the same as those won pre-chase. JJ and Chad are just better at playing in today's vanilla cup racing. They know the chase game, the boxy COT, the cookie cutter tracks. And when they're in a situation like this weekend where there are real variables in the outcome, they sandbag the whole day and win by sheer luck and attrition. It may be smart on their part, but it's boring racing, and unless NASCAR gets back to the basics that built this sport, long time fans will continue to drift away, race attendance and TV ratings will continue to flag. I used to never miss a race, it was a weekend ritual. I would typically attend a few live every year and watch the rest on TV. The last few years, I never go to the track and it's rare for me to watch one live.

So let's all join hands and sing kumbaya for JJ and crew, comma, again. Hey, perhaps they'll make it 10 in a row, yawn...

Nascar is a joke. People want playoffs in college football to get rid of drama and to find a clear cut champion. Nascar adds playoffs as a means to add drama in an attempt to coverup the low quality of racing, while at the same time not really giving us a clear cut winner.

Can't really blame JJ or any team for it, they are just doing what Nascar requires. So it's not a hate thing on JJ or anything. All the blame goes on Nascar.

Btw, if there was no chase, the year would have been much more exciting. JJ would have just passed Stewart for 1st place after Dega(although one might say JJ's strategy for the race would have been much different).

    http://www.nascar.com/races/cup/2009/data/standings_whatif.html

Right now with no chase, Stewart would be only 7 points behind JJ. In 2008, Gordon would have won etc.

Not 48's fault, someone has to win and do it every year, and grats to them for doing it. But nascar has become a bad joke.

I give full credit to JJ and Chad for figuring out how to be the best team for 10 races. However, I can't really compare JJ's 3 (soon to be 4) titles to those that were won by drivers over an entire season. Just not the same. all of their 'championships' have been won with the 'not-a-playoff' system, artificially reconfiguring points after 26 races. The 48 team has done one heck of a job playing that game, and no one else can hold a candle to them. But it isn't quite the same. even Jeff Gordon said that, if he won another title in this format, he would consider that he won 4 Winston Cup (full season) titles, and one Sprint Cup (10 race) title. Sounds as if he feel the same way I do.
