Bump ban produces single-file Talladega

  • Print

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP)—To anyone watching, Sunday’s race at Talladega Superspeedway looked like a high-speed protest of NASCAR’s pre-race ban on bumping in turns.

Cars paraded around the 2.66-mile speedway in a long, single-file line after NASCAR made it clear that bump-drafting would not be tolerated.

“It wasn’t like everybody was in their cars and we were like, ‘Let’s get single-file and prove a point’ or ‘Let’s just follow each other,”’ race-winner Jamie McMurray said. “You had to be in the outside groove because that’s where all the momentum was.”

McMurray snapped an 86-race losing streak after the final 10 laps were marred by two frightening accidents in which the cars of Ryan Newman and then Mark Martin went airborne.

Newman, who was trapped in his car for almost 15 minutes before rescue workers could shear away its roof, called it “a boring race and a ridiculous race” afterward. But McMurray didn’t think the race was all that different.

“I remember in 2004, 2005 with the other car, Dale Jr. riding around the very top of the race track and everybody following him,” he said. “I remember it being really similar to that. And more than anything now, the drivers have learned they have to make it to the end of the race in order to win the race. So maybe they don’t take the chances that they did a few years ago.”

Kurt Busch, sixth with three races remaining for the 2009 NASCAR championship, called the lack of risk-taking a byproduct of the restrictor plates used only at Talladega and Daytona.

“It’s been an ongoing process since they introduced the restrictor plates, as far as this Catch-22 that we’re in,” Busch said. “We have to provide for the safety of the drivers and the fans, and yet at the same time, we have to put on a good show.”

To put on a better show at a track usually known for three- and four-wide racing, Busch suggested NASCAR increase the size of the opening in the plates at Talladega but not Daytona, where he said speed is less of an issue.

“We should go faster at Talladega and create the need for the cars to slide a little bit and put more emphasis on set-up than on bump drafting,” he said.

Race was a joke. Throw the plates away. Let the boys drive. Nothing like leaving 50 laps into the race because of boredom

Nascar is a reflection on america.. lame and gay. Rule changes I would need to see before I spend 1 cent on anything nascar. Get rid of the restrictor plates, ACtually make them stock cars again... Stop making rules like the anti bump draft rule- let the race track politics be free to bump whoever, Fans eveter track at thier own risk so the rest of the world isnt punished by whiners.

seriously..woulda been hilarious if the drivers were to protest the race..and drive single file for the whole 500 miles..(cept for pit stops of course)..no bumping..no under yellow line . .instant one line formation after one of nascars bogas yellows . . would force the current retards running nascar to actually come up with real solutions .. . not some lame restrictor plate.. ..

With the new HANS system drivers are completly safe. Ryan Newman walked away not even a scratch on him and barely shaken. Take off the restricot plates and let the boys race, at least for talledega for cryin out loud. Those cars were going considerable slower than other years. I remember when talledega would keep you on the edge of your seat, I don't think i even think sat up out of my seat

i was really looking forward to this race until I heard about the bump drafting ban just before the race. Then, I was a little skeptical. After about the 100th lap of follow the leader and a nap with nothing interesting happening I turned the channel. I grew up thinking that Talladega was about pushing the speed and taking chances on who you were gonna bump draft around the track to get to the front. I'm sorry that those fans got injured previously but if you think you can go to a race and possibly be 20 ft. from a 200 mph wreck and not take the chance of maybe getting hurt you're stupid and should stay at home to watch. The drivers know what they're getting into when they get into those cars and maybe the fans should realize what they're getting into when they sit down on the other side of that fence. That race sucked and if these same rules are in place next time i won't even watch the first 5 laps.

Well first off, cynthia knows nothing about racing, young people or being a parent. I am young (24) my parents never sat me in front of a tv or medicated me and I've been watching nascar racing since I was seven years old. 1992 when my hero davey allison was racing for the championship. Since then ive seen countless races from all eras of nascar, read the books, and watched the movies about. Talladega is my home track, I have lived in alabama all my life and have always watched the race at talladega(since I was 7). The race I watched sunday was the worst race I have ever witnessed. Nascar does need to do something. Small engines and no plates should be the most locally solution. Nascar cliams that a smaller engine could not hold up for 500 miles. This is bull! Just because they didnt work in the '70s doesnt mean they cant work now. They just dont wont to lose the pack racing and the big wrecks, which nascar thinks is what the fans want to see.

NASCAR is crap now.....I gave up season tickets to Bristol after they ruined that track. Thank God they are not involved in Dirt Late Model racing....they would find a way to screw that up too. I am sure Dale Sr is rolling over in his grave!!

    Cynthia:

    I've been following/watching NASCAR since 1984 and I can assure you I'm not;
(Your quote: "most of the people posting such negative comments are a younger crowd, products of video games and having been babysat by televisions thanks to parents who choose to medicate kids instead of dealing with them..")

NASCAR has left behind those like myself who made this sport by watching, following, driving 6 to 15 hours to a race track--If you haven't realized it or not NASCAR now caders (sp?) to this so called younger crowd.... Hell, if it weren't for Rusty Wallace leading the charge there would be no more country music playing at the race track!! If you remember there were about 2 races (a few yrs back) where there were only rock songs played...

NASCAR is destroying this sport--Most of the out-spoken drivers (who NASCAR actaully listened to) are now gone... i.e., Dale Earnhardt, Rusty Wallace, Darrell Watrip, etc...

Tony Stewart is very out-spoken but the problem is that, NASCAR does not listen to him simply due to the fact Tony is a man who speaks his mind after every race...

When Dale Earnhardt passed (which I was a huge fan of and followed since 1984) I was truly hoping that Jeff Gordon would step up and take Dales' place even though I wasn't a fan of Jeff but I truly thought he could be the voice of NASCAR but he let that slip him by.

For the past 14 years I have been at Lowes Motor Speed way for the 600 and as Bob stated in his below post my wife and I will NOT be there in 2010!!

I feel that I have all the right in the world to come on here and post my negative comments because if I really sat down and added up all the money I have spent following NASCAR over the past 25 years, hell I could be 3/4 owner of Hendricks Motor Sports.... So I will continue to post negative comments until NASCAR corrects their mistakes!!

Enjoy the race Cynthia--that's your right and I respect it...

CYNTHIA - my friends and I have made it to the Dega infield for every spring race over the past 15 years but we've cancelled our plans to go in April 2010. From the looks of the empty stands, you may be the only one jumping and cheering by then. Have a good time!

Cynthia (#37), yes it is exciting to hear the roar of the engines and hear the cars (cars?) go whizzing by; however, you can't say that it wouldn't be more exciting if the cars were actually racing (and not riding) for the entire 500 miles. The only way to make that event work without getting rid of restricter plates or COT is to award points to the leaders at each 100 mile increment. I'd still rather see them run 301 c.i. engines (4" x 3") with no restricter plates and a modified COT. The safety part of COT is great. They can even make it safer by canceling the race. Come on Mr. France, what would your dad have done to fix this? What you have now is NOT working and you know it!

What the drivers need is a bloody good stereo and an auto pilot function. Ultimately, they could remove the drivers all together and use like a remote to control the cars or as someone else said put them on rails. That way the drivers could spend more time in front of the tv cameras telling us how much they love their sponsors.

Thank you, Hollywood, for bringing up the 'history' of the track...most of the people posting such negative comments are a younger crowd, products of video games and having been babysat by televisions thanks to parents who choose to medicate kids instead of dealing with them...that being said, my hubby and i attended the race and Talladega and had a great time and enjoyed the race as we always do. if NASCAR told them they wanted to see daylight between the cars, what more could the drivers do? i understand the safety issues of both the drivers and the fans in the stands, but come on, let the drivers do what they've trained for most all their lives...sadly, now the veterans, that actually CAN bump draft in corners, have been limited due to the rookie drivers that WISH they knew how to drive half as good as some of the older guys...i'm really tired of reading such negative comments about a sport that i will love to the end, regardless of how many single file races i have to watch. there's nothing like sitting in those stands and feeling the thunder of the cars rumble through my body, and the sounds and smells of burning rubber. if people have come to hate NASCAR so badly, please switch your TV back to ping pong or whatever other lame sport you do care for because i PROMISE i won't interrupt your viewing pleasure by leaving crappy comments about a sport that i know nothing about...which is where most of the negativity towards NASCAR comes from...people that do not know enough about it to speak intelligently of it. stay home haters! it gives me more room in the stands to jump and shout and run about like a TRUE FAN of any sport should do! thanks muchly!
