Volkswagen program head at NASCAR finale

  • Print

HOMESTEAD, Florida (AP)—The head of Volkswagen’s motor sports program is at Homestead-Miami Speedway, fueling speculation that the automaker is interested in joining Toyota as the second foreign manufacturer in NASCAR.

Top NASCAR officials confirmed to The Associated Press that Hans-Joachim Stuck met with the sanctioning body on Saturday at the track. The officials requested anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the meeting.

Volkswagen officials expressed interest in entering a racing series, but indicated they are more inclined to pick a series that showcases technology, according to a person who attended the meeting but also requested anonymity. NASCAR features competition over technology.

A second option for Volkswagen could be the Grand-Am Road Racing Series, which is owned by NASCAR and uses foreign engine makers.

Earlier this season, NASCAR chairman Brian France said the sanctioning body is open to accepting new manufacturers into the stock car series. The only requirement is that manufacturers must have production plants in the U.S.

Volkswagen has a plant under construction in Tennessee, and the facility is scheduled to build midsize sedans in 2011. That coincides with NASCAR’s tentative plans to replace carburetors on Sprint Cup Series cars with fuel injection.

NASCAR held a Nov. 3 meeting with representatives from all four current manufacturers, as well as engine builders from five race teams and two independent suppliers to discuss the potential move to fuel injection.

A move to that system apparently interests Volkswagen, whose $1 billion plant in Chattanooga would qualify the German manufacturer to compete in NASCAR.

France opened the door for more foreign participation in June when he admitted the sanctioning body has had continued discussions with interested automakers.

BMW, Honda, Hyundai, Nissan and Mercedes-Benz all have manufacturing plants inside the U.S.—the same criteria Toyota met when NASCAR accepted it into NASCAR in 2002.

“We have companies that are interested in particular in developing the North American market as robustly as they can,” France said. “And we’re all aware that there are lots of foreign manufacturers producing cars here in America. That was part of the rationale that Toyota used.

“We’re the pre-eminent place in North America for car manufacturers to build their business with an auto racing group. We remain that and clearly there’s some companies that are going to look at opportunities that may not have even been there in the past that could be presented in the future.”

Allowing more foreign automakers into the series could rankle hard-core U.S. fans, who objected to Toyota and think NASCAR should include only American manufacturers. But the decline of the automotive industry has wreaked havoc on racing budgets, and most NASCAR teams either received cutbacks in funding this season or were cut off entirely.

Even deep-pocketed Toyota has had to reduce its spending, and the Japanese automaker is currently not taking on any new factory-supported teams.

BTW, yall don't seem to mind all those Big Three jobs & money going to Canadian & Mexican workers from the majority of the foreign plants they love because they can pay 1/3 of the salaries & minimal benefits.
Try @#$%in' about that for a change !

Oddly, everyone ignores the fact that the MAJORITY of parts & systems of ALL vehicles are made around the world. The technology & parts that come from those "American" cars & trucks that yall drive, comes from about 20 different countries. There are NO truely American vehicles at all.

Why whine & complain about any company that is producing jobs & tax revenue for OUR citizens & government ? It's paying bills & putting food on the table for 1000's of Americans & keeping roofs over their heads. Something that Detroit isn't able to continue. Would you have them starving, homeless & in the unemployment & welfare lines, just to satisfy your fear & ignorance ?

And I still say that yall just can't stand the competition. Limiting the competition only allows the Big Three to take turns controling & dominating. While not allowing the technology to expand. All out of fear. Crawl back up on the poarch is ya can't hang, girls... LOL !!!

Toyotas are not Made in America, but some are assembled here. For every job that Toyota makes available here in the "making" of cars, Ford Motor Company, for example, provides 17 jobs. Assembly is about 7% of the "making." Very simply, foreign manufacturers are building, making or whatever word you choose to misuse here, automobiles elsewhere, bringing them here and doing the final assembly here. "Final assembly," folks, ain't "making" and it ain't "building." Sorry, but you are buying the big lie and making monthly installments on it. Me? I have a Ford Fusion. We had 14-1/3 people employed here to make what one Mexican in Hermasillo assembled. I chose it over the Mazda 6 assembled in Ford's Flat Rock, Michigan plant because 1/3 of the jobs on the Mazda labeled product were American jobs. Of our 18 vehicles, we have shed all Nissans and all but two Toyotas and one Honda, which are all planned for replacement with Fords, and three Volkswagens. Costs to operate heavily favors the Ford products and I like to do my best to support the American ambiance that I appreciate.

Dan Dawg #34, First, I'm not insecure about anything. I live in TN(somewhat against my will,) and have met many ppl that think like you do. Also, to call me a stupid excuse for a human being and un-American simply because I'm not xenophobic like you, is poor judgement on your part. If your such a great American, than nothing in your house is foreign made. You must collect the proper resources and make your own shelter and clothing, and hunt or grow all of your food. I'm from a military family and I lived in Germany for a good amount of time, and the way you talk is one of the reasons why other countries dislike Americans. By the way, I saw plenty of Germans driving FORDS with no problem and liking them. Why should it be such a big deal if they want to reciprocate the enjoyment they had in an American owned vehicle on us with a vehicle that is German owned. I'm also willing to bet your one of the stupid Teabaggers that show up at town hall meetings listening to the lies of Michael Steele. I can also bet that Sarah Palin, the dumbest b*#$@ on the planet, is one of your heroes. Learn to open your damn mind and be useful for once.

in spec racing - anything is possible.
There are no VW plants putting hard working Americans to work. - this will be another one of Brian Frances failures if this is allowed.

Might as well call SPrint Cup - Hendrick Cup racing after the last 4 years = oops, sorry, not all Hendrick teams are competive....lol

As I recall, both Robby Gordon and Roger Penske have worked with VW related companies in the past. So, I wouldn't be surprised if there was something to this rumor.

Hate to tell all of you foriegn haters this... no I'm going to love it! WE LIVE IN A GLOBAL ECONOMY AND NASCAR IS PART OF THAT GLOBAL ECONOMY! Foriegn auto manufacturers are here in America and are going to stay. Oh and for all you redneck backwater morons that like to think NASCAR should only be for "American" cars, your days have come and gone!

In case you haven't had time to study the "New South" economy, here's a little economics lesson for you... all those "foriegn" auto makers have their plants in the SOUTH in place like Tennessee, Alabama, and Mississippi, just to name three! They provide thousands of AMERICAN jobs to you redneck backwater morons, both directly and indirectly. The financial impact of just one assembly plant provides BILLIONS of dollars to local and state economies. In many places in the south, if it were not for those plants where AMERICANS build BMW's, Mercedes, and Toyotas to name three, you redneck backwater morons would still be picking cotton and living in shacks and trailers. While I don't have the exact wage figure and quite frankly could care less about looking it up, I know the average wage paid by those "foriegn auto makers" to AMERICAN workers in the South to build "Foriegn AMERICAN-made" cars is a hellava lot more than you redneck backwater morons could make picking cotton!

So if VW or Mercedes or BMW or Honda or any other manufacturer wants to come into NASCAR and try to beat JJ in a Hendric-built CHEVY.... bring'em on! Toyota couldn't do it! Oh and let'm bring their BILLIONS with them so they can provide more jobs to AMERICANS in North Carolina where the unemployment rate among the racing industry is higher than the national rate. I'm sure there's a few tire changers and gas men and body men and engine builders that would love to get back to the track where they could earn a living to pay their mortgages and feed their kids and make their Chevy truck payments and get off unemployment! Afterall if you're in the racing business, one lug nut looks like another when you've got $$$ in the bank and food on the table!!!

Brian France won't be happy until he has run Nascar into the ground. As far as Toyota and Volkswagen are concerned, where's the money going? They may have plants in the US and employ Americans, but where does the money go? Back to Japan and Germany. I don't care if a Chevy, Ford, Dodge has parts from other countries, they're American companies and the money doesn't go overseas to foreign corporations.

On a lighter note, I can't see VW in NASCAR, but imagine how cool it would be if they brought the Scirrocco back into US production.......

I think the real question is this good for Nascar is this what the fans really want and will it bring in new fans to the sport.
Personally I think it is killing the culture of the sport and France is driving the wedge deeper and deeper between existing fans with all the changes he has imposed.

do you guys complain when coca-cola, pepsi-cola, apple inc, ford and GM sell their products overseas or do most of you not even understand the concept of international business? toyota isn't the number 1 selling brand in the U.S. because of nascar. it's because they make a superior product and don't have the UAW around, demanding their workers make 40 bucks an hour, to install a couple of pop rivets. it's your neighbor across the street and down the street that is buying toyota, honda and kia. remember the cash for clunkers program...over 80% of the new vehicles purchased were foreign brands. how is that nascar's fault or even toyota's fault? do you guys think they import japanese workers to the plants also? toyota, kia, honda and hyundai are employing thousands of americans.....you know, the authentic ones with white skin, blue eyes, blonde hair and 'intimidator t-shirts'.

It's a good thing for our country when foreign businesses bring their money here to invest. Having VW in NASCAR would mean good jobs and more competition can only mean better racing. I would say it's a win-win situation. I don't know how people can still be so xenophobic! The fact that we now live in a global community has only made our standard of living improve. I guess some people will always fear change.

North American, did everyone forget who and what started Nascar. I have no problem with the Japanese or the Germans, but the money, advertizing and profits should stay in North America. Americans started it, Americans support it, I can't imagine watching non-American teams running "shine".

There are some American racers who have proven their loyalty to the idea of Nascar and won't drive for foreign owners. My hats off to them. I won't support foreign products, I won't send my money overseas. I do what I can to benefit American Companies. You won't buy American products and then you sit on your butt and complain about America going to hell. Look in the mirror that's America's problem, right there in it.

Think American, live American, buy American. Be American. Anything else is unacceptable.
