Rain washes out qualifying at Talladega

  • Print

TALLADEGA, Ala. (AP)—Jimmie Johnson last started from the pole at Talladega Superspeedway in 2002, as the points leader, lined up next to Mark Martin.

He didn’t even make it to the first lap.

In a bizarre prerace mishap as the drivers were warming up their tires, a problem with Martin’s steering box caused him to run into Johnson. The two cars skidded into the infield grass, Johnson suffered damage to the front of his Chevrolet, and had dropped to the back of the field when the race began.

“Did you bring that same steering box back?” Jeff Gordon asked Martin on Saturday after rain washed out qualifying at Talladega.

The inclement weather led NASCAR to cancel the qualifying session and set the field for Sunday’s race on points—which put Johnson and Martin side-by-side again, with Hendrick Motorsports teammate Gordon right behind them in the second row.

Gordon was only joking when he hinted at potential sabotage, but both he and Martin know they need something catastrophic to happen to Johnson on Sunday for either to have a chance of challenging him for the Sprint Cup title.

The three-time defending series champion has a commanding points lead with only four races remaining in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship, with Talladega as the last remaining obstacle in his path toward a record fourth consecutive title.

The fastest track in NASCAR is the worst of the 10 Chase venues for Johnson, who has one victory but an overall average finish of just 17.7 at Talladega. Because of the unpredictability of restrictor-plate racing, the unknowns facing him on Sunday have left Johnson admittedly struggling to sleep the past few days.

“Falling asleep lately has been difficult, I have to admit,” Johnson said. “The brain wonders and thinks about a lot of different things. Especially when I come to a track like this.”

The rain means all 12 Chase drivers will start at the front of the field, exactly where they want to be.

“The safest place really is leading,” Johnson said.

Not always, as Johnson learned in 2002 when Martin had his fluke incident. It was Johnson who reminded him of it this weekend.

“I’m still embarrassed about that,” Martin said. “That’s a long way in the rearview mirror. Why don’t we look forward here instead of back? Not my proudest weekend.”

Johnson, who had taken over the points lead a week earlier, wound up 37th that day and dropped to third in the standings, his title hopes over.

“I remember thinking what the hell just happened?” Johnson recalled.

It’s those kinds of flukes he’ll try to avoid Sunday, but he’s also trying not to overanalyze the potential for disaster.

“You could worry yourself to death on how things will turn out here,” he said. “All it’s going to do is shorten your fuse, potentially put the team on edge to where you make bad decisions, and we don’t need that.”

Why don't they have a draw for qualifying when there is a rain out instead of giving the points leader that much more advantage, only seems fair

jj is not that good and his crew chief is not that good either, as far as the race today he is lucky that its rained cause he would be starting mid pack, in the middle of the storm. but if he stays up front all day and no one touches him then nascar needs to tear his car down to the last bolt and nut

Last year JJ got 5 rain out poles in the chase.....so its nothing new. They need to come up with a better way....maybe as simple as drawing numbers out of a hat. People forget that he ALSO gets 1st PIT CHOICE! So you can bet he will take the first stall and be out first or real close to it EVERY TIME they pit!

Brad, you could say that the Chase tarnishes Johnson's potential 4-peat, but if you think about it, and know your NASCAR history, you could say the very same thing about Cale Yarborough's 3-peat. The basic setup for the modern points system was only a year old when Cale started his 3 peat. Im sure if he did that today, under those very same circumstances, people would still whine and complain.

The best man/team leads the way and that is how it should be -- rain was not their request. Jimmie and Chad are up front because they prepare and execute. Yep the number 48 group are the ones to TRY to beat. Lots of luck to all theothers out there except of course crybaby Kyle Bush. He should try accounting or something else that would not endanger other people's lives. He is a dangerous spoiled brat regardless of what Jimmy Spencer thinks of his skills. Go Jimmie J

Jesus H. Christ !!!! This may be THE most absolute worst crap I've EVER read on a Nascar blog. I can see why Nascar fans have the reputation that we do. Some of you idiots are an embarrassment to Nascar and to your families. I could make a top-10 list of complete idiots on this blog but I think we all know who they are without it.

Perhaps Mother Nature is a Jimmie Johnson fan? Jimmie Johnson could fall in a bucket of $hit and come out smelling like a rose.

out of all the tracks where qualifying doesnt really matter, its here and Daytona, so whoever seems to think that Jimmie Johnson is getting everything from NASCAR can sit down and shut up. Im not even a Johnson fan anyways, and odds are he wont be in the lead for long because of the plates, anything can happen here. These people who cry and complain on these posts dont seem to realize what kind of history they are witnessing here, nobody has ever won 4 straight championships, although I must say the Chase kinda tarnishes them a little, but still, if you look back a few years ago, 2005, Roush had all 5 cars in the Chase, nobody called it 'ROUSHCAR" back then, nobody from Roush won the championship that year, but because Jimmie Johnson can win races suddenly it's the end of all things NASCAR and its rigged and everything in between. If you think it's so boring, dont watch it. If you think its rigged, dont watch it, but obviously something must be right, because these people seem to keep watching and know "exactly" whats going on.

Listen, You can say any thing you want, But look at the facts, Hendricks runs most likely the number 1 shop in Nascar, It has nothing to do with cheating, or nascar giving them breaks, or as one clown said--paying off god...He hires top-notch people, he takes care of them, backs them, and supplies every thing they need...Look when Tont Stewart formed Steward-Hauss, Wheres he getting his cars from, engines, etc, Hendricks motor sports !!! ,,So i guess then Stewart-Haus cheats also, correct !!!

You can hate Hendricks motorsports, But you do have to give them credit for what they have done, and showen..And dont even bring up Kyle Bush being let go, If you dont know the whole story behind that one, then dont mention it, Because he was let go, due to his agent sneaking around under Hendricks nose trying to get a better deal with another owner. Thats when Hendricks decided it was best for all involved to go differant ways.

46 If its so hard to watch what are you doing on here whining dont watch! 37 Ford didnt even have a race engine Roush whined enough they let him design new heads for ford when that didnt help he whined and they let him design a new block to go with them. If they had to run factory over head valve engines ford would have been out of racing in the 90s Chevy and Chrysler are the only two companys that produce them.Toyota in Nascars a complete joke they have never even produced a overhead valve engine!
