Same frustrations for Newman after Talladega

  • Print

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP)—Ryan Newman is still sore and frustrated from Talladega.

What frustrates Newman more than anything after his harrowing crash with five laps remaining last weekend is that it’s the same kind of situation he was concerned about after the last race at Talladega six months earlier.

“It’s a very ironic situation … living out the things I was frustrated about firsthand six months later,” Newman said Friday at Texas Motor Speedway. “I want it to be safer because I plan on being there in the spring, racing just the same, trying to win that race.”

On the last lap of the previous race at Talladega in April, Carl Edwards was trying to block Brad Keselowski when their cars made contact. Edwards then spun into Newman’s path, and the second hit sent Edwards’ car soaring over Newman’s hood into the air and the frontstretch safety fence. The battered car returned to the track while debris injured seven fans in the stands.

Last week, Newman was left upside down in the grass and was trapped inside the car for almost 15 minutes before safety workers were able to cut him free.

Newman, who made it clear that he “wasn’t dissatisfied” with the way he was removed from the car, said he met Wednesday with NASCAR vice president of competition Robin Pemberton and Sprint Cup Series director John Darby.

“We talked about the extrication of myself from the accident and, secondly, the reason why we were in that position in the first point, which to me was more important,” Newman said. “From an aerodynamic standpoint, obviously our biggest thing is just to keep the cars on the ground.”

Newman described the meeting as “good” and “very constructive” and said he learned about some testing that had been done, but that more testing needs to be done. He said they talked about the car and he shared his perspective on a few things.

So what needs to happen before NASCAR returns to Talladega next spring?

“There are for sure things that could be done and should be done based on what we saw, both Mark’s accident and my accident and the spring accident with Carl,” said Newman, adding that it needs to be a collective effort by NASCAR and the teams to find solutions. “Six months is plenty of time to make those changes.”

Only hours before last Sunday’s race, NASCAR banned bump-drafting through the turns at Talladega hoping to avoid crashes like Newman’s and Mark Martin, who went airborne in a crash with two laps to go.

Newman said he understands why that ban was implemented, but doesn’t think it is a fix.

“It was a horrible wreck that Ryan had to go through. It’s a horrible thing and we need to try to fix that,” Martin said. “But that was not different than what we have seen for a good solid 15 years or more. It’s really hard to stop the cars from doing that when they get around like that.”

Regardless, Newman looks forward to getting back into the car at the 1 1/2 -mile, high-banked Texas track.

“After last weekend, it will be nice to get back in the car and use some muscles I haven’t all week,” Newman said.

Maybe you need to start following MMA if you want to see action such as knock-outs etc.... Because if you tune it just to see the wrecks you have issues!! To say that-- "Newman needs to just man up and if he can’t handle a crash maybe he shouldn’t drive a car. " is just simply idiotic and ludicrous!!

Ryan Newman has all the right in the world to be p*ssed and I don't blame him for going off on NASCAR as they ruined that race and also made it much more dangerous by boxing them up all together...

To make those comments about tuning in to see "a horrific crash" again is simple ignorance!

beachbum, are you really THAT naive? Do you really think Newman is running around looking for someone to listen to him about Talladega? The reason you keep hearing his opinion is because he was the tracks latest victim, and the press keeps asking him about it. Don't try to make it sound like Newman is doing something wrong here, he is just doing his job and answering their questions.

Come on Ryan do you think you are the only one that has been put in jeapordy at Talledega? I dont think so. Why are you any different that the others that have went for a terrible ride there. Quit whining and get on with racing. Nascar is not going to suddenly change everything just because you say they should.

If every body wants to be safe @ dega.why dont NASCAR get some tractors tear down those high banks. put in some 24 degree banking @ all the turns then the racers wont complain about it .NASCAR wont ban it. and all the fans would come to watch it . I'm prob. wrong but thats my thoughts.

They should have the drivers just jog around the track at Dega, for 500 laps. That would totally make NASCAR's Boring race division really happy.

Bet ya there would still be an accident though......

All I know is Taladaga USED to be one of my favorite race tracks. Now I can't stay awake through the whole race. Thank's NASCAR... As for smaller engines, why not? Those guys are the best in the world at making things work. Would have to get rid of the retarded spoilers though. Should anyway as they become a neat little wing while driving in reverse. I would rather see some blown engines than some dead drivers.

SMALLER ENGINE,BAD IDEA.A plated 358[current engine size] reportedly makes around 450 hp.Any halfway built 305 inch racing engine is good for about 650 hp,you just have too spin it higher.NASCAR knows this, the Cup engine builders know this, and the sportscar racers who are limited to 5.0 liters know this.Aint gonna happen, folks.

How about designing the rear deck to operate like the roof flaps ? A restraint on either side to keep the deck from wrapping up over the roof when it opens. The wing on the bacvk would have no effect at all,as it would be hidden by the open deck. Don't know if that would be beneficial or not. Just a thought, somethings got to be done.Gotta keep em on the ground.,with the wheels down! Or,do away with the "plate tracks".Thats it,They"re flirting with disaster and disaster is getting entirely too close.

To slow the cars down at Talledega and Daytona, just reduce the width of the tires. Go to a 10 inch wide tire. You will definately lift in the corners...And you eliminate the cost of building plate motors..Take the plates off. This will give you throttle response and should break up the cars from running in a pack.. Driver abilities will come back in to play..

They should cut the cubic inches from 350 to 300 for the plate races and see how that works for a race or two. I know about the money @#$% but these teams are smart enough to built them with sleeves/smaller pistons
    or castings. I remember the 283 Chevy, 289 Ford, & 273 Dodge/Plymouth
    that would flat get it!
Crazytoy77 has a great idea for a flap on the wing to open when the car spins backward. One more thought....
maybe the drivers/crews should get together and form a little alliance to deal with King France.
