Sadler to drive a Ford as RPM finalizes 2010 plans

  • Print

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)—Richard Petty Motorsports is finalizing elements of its 2010 program, beginning this weekend when Elliott Sadler will race a Ford at Talladega Superspeedway.

Behind the scenes, the team is also shoring up its lineup.

Team officials familiar with RPM’s personnel moves told The Associated Press on Wednesday that sponsor Best Buy will move from Sadler’s car next season to Petty’s famed No. 43 with AJ Allmendinger as the driver. The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity because the changes have yet to be announced.

Stanley will become the sole primary sponsor for Sadler. Both Best Buy and Stanley had shared Sadler’s car this season.

Sponsorship concerns have been one of the larger issues facing RPM as it prepares for 2010. The team is trying to complete a deal to merge with Yates Racing, and plans to move full time from Dodge to Ford next season.

But its lineup has been a huge question as RPM fielded only two fully funded cars all season for Sadler and Kasey Kahne. The team has had to piece together funding for Allmendinger and Reed Sorenson, and both drivers have forfeited either salary or race winnings to help keep their teams afloat.

Majority team owner George Gillett Jr. said earlier this month that RPM would field a minimum of three cars next season, but he would not discuss the potential lineup or sponsorship issues. By moving Best Buy to the No. 43, the team now has the far less difficult task of selling some individual races for Allmendinger and Sadler, as opposed to the daunting task of trying to secure a primary sponsor willing to spend $15 million or more to back Allmendinger.

RPM could still be a four-car team, contingent on the merger with Yates and if driver Paul Menard and the sponsorship from his father’s hardware store chain stay within the organization. The Menards could try to negotiate their way out of the contract and move the entire package to another team.

Either way, all signs indicate the RPM-Yates merger will go through.

“We do know that the negotiations are going very well with Yates Racing and RPM,” said Brian Wolfe, director of Ford North America Motorsports.

“Both sides are very excited about the opportunities, but the final I’s dotted and T’s crossed has not been completed yet. All parties are working together, assuming that there are no real hard rocks in the road yet, so we’re just really excited about the opportunities going forward.”

The change to Ford will happen regardless of the merger, and Sadler will be the first RPM driver to race in the new model Sunday at Talladega. Allmendinger is expected to drive a Ford in the final three races of the season.

In getting its drivers seat time now, RPM officials will get a head start on their 2010 planning.

Giving Sadler the car for Talladega also gives the team a database to prepare for the season-opening Daytona 500, which is also a restrictor plate race. Sadler is the best plate racer at RPM, with two top-10 finishes in the three plate races so far this season.

He’s also led at least one lap in his last 13 starts at Talladega, has three poles and three top-10 finishes.

Sadler also has a lengthy past relationship with both Ford (269 starts) and Yates (130 races). He won seven poles in Yates Fords, including one at Talladega in May 2006.

“Since this is the final restrictor plate race of the season, we made the decision to run a Ford to get some work done in advance,” Sadler said. “This will be our first time to practice and work on a Fusion under real race conditions. It should help us get ready to make a strong showing at Daytona and put us in the best position to start next season. Since it’s important to start a season off on the right foot, we thought we’d try to get a head start.”

The only factory drive train in all the cars is the rear end. All use a 9 inch Ford.

And they call this stock car racing?

Yeah, and while I am talking about history, Dale jr. needs to quit driving on his Dads name. He will fade out just like Kyle Petty has.

RPM, is a joke! , and the Pettys as they were once known, are history, and I doubt the Petty name will be around after they wash out with the Yates merger. It,s obvious because of the way Kyle faded out into the sunset, having never driven the famous #43. They are on borrowed time and money.

Petty has turned himself into a joke. Look around everyone but Petty wins races in a Dodge. Kasy is a left over from Everingham he knows what good stuff is and the kid still drives to wins with Petty junk. I'm a Dodge man and I'm glad to see Petty gone he's a disgrace to the MOPAR world.
Oh by the way you Camry folks and Chevfy, Ford folks. Any time you feel spunky try jumping on a Charger R/T or SRT8.

Want another example of how far NASCAR has fallen and is falling?
I subscribe to Sports Illustrated and this week's issue {2Nov,2009} has exactly 0/ZERO mention of anything about NASCAR.....not even a letter to the editor.
    There's a Toyota ad w/Joe Gibbs, but that's it!

......oh how the mighty have fallen when even SI disregards them at their supposed hottest part of the season.

But, Brian-the-dumbazz, etc will still tell y'all how rosy the future is for NASCAR.
Tell me more Brian.............I like faerie tales.................

I got an good feeling about moving to Fords for RPM, Kasey will continue to develop into a great racer, but Sadler is out once his contract is up, AJ ummm, still not sure with the DUI what will happen, and Menard if he stays will still not be good. I could see RPM/Yates go after Jamie Mac if Menard leaves, or they drop AJ because of the DUI, You also have Casey Mears (possibly leaving RCR). Petty is a smart guy, and you know that he wants to win.

they better get their Ford motors real quick before Ford goes under. The UAw locals have been voting against the latest contract because Ford is asking for the same concessions that GM and Chrysler got. Ford didnt get a bailout but they did mortgage the company two years ago ( including their blue oval logo) for $23 billion and will be running out of money soon if they cant lower costs. I dont think people will stand for another bailout that benefits the UAw ( the last one cost $81 billion and even the auto czar Rattner admits at least $30 billion of that is gone and wont be repaid).

Post 6 thinks it's better to run 2 competitive teams then 4 wannabe teams. Well, that sounds good but it doesn't help the over all picture. Look at Hendrick with 4 cars sharing data during testing. That's how they get ahead. They can test more set ups then a team with only two cars. They have the opportunity to try things the smaller teams simply don't have the time for. Stuff like that is what helps them win.
Although, I have to say that this hasn't helped Jr. I swear, someone is sabotaging his cars. I've never seen such bad luck. If the car doesn't break, then someone runs into him. It seems like something is going on in the garage. The other drivers aren't giving him any room and they don't appear to have any problem with wrecking Jr.
It should be interesting next year to see how Kasey does in a ford. I think that the ford will give him a car that will work better in more situations. His Dodge didn't like the shorter tracks and I don't know why. It has to have something to do with the engines power band. He just can't get it going on the restarts.

Ford, Chevy, Dodge and Toyota? What does it mater, they are all the same cars (COT)! What a JOKE! NASCAR does not stand for National association of Stoc Cars. All the makes should pull out of any sponsership and see how NASCAR likes that. It was about the makes and what won on Sunday, sold on Monday. If I wanted to watch a bunch of custom cars, I could watch the Indy league. The COT has killed Nascar. Go back to stock car racing! Limit what can be done areo to the cars and that will slow them down at Talledaga.

I have not watched a race since the fourth race of the year, and I am boycotting until they go back to stock cars, or I will not be back. I am not the only one. Look at the attendance and the TV ratings. They are way DOWN!

Solution, Ford - Mustang, Chevy - Camaro, Dodge - Challanger and Toyota - Solara. The car with the best advantages wins, the other cars change to catch up. Remember the great races between Ford Torinos and the Dodge Chargers and Plymouth RoadRunners (Daytona 500"s and Superbirds).

Nascar get your heads out of your A""'s and start listening to the fan's again or go the way of the dinosaurs!

    Thats an odd setup.

Cant think for the life of me if any other team had ever did something like this, having cars within the team running different, competing manufacturers (im not talking about Olds and Chevy, or something within GM, or Ford, or Chrysler, im talking about Dodge and Ford or something of that nature)

ACTUALLY, Richard won the 1969 Riverside 500 in his Ford Torino, not the 1968 race, In '68, he was still in his Petty Blue Plymouth. His first race in a Ford was the Riverside 500 on Feb 1 1969

Actually Frevic, Petty won the 1968 Riverside race in a Ford Torino, the first race he drove that particular car. Over the years The King has driven Plymouths, Dodges, Oldsmobiles, Pontiacs, Chevy, nearly all (formerly) American made brands except American Motors.
