First Jack, now Jim, on way out of NASCAR

  • Print

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)—The maker of Jim Beam Bourbon will stop sponsoring Robby Gordon’s Sprint Cup team next season, sending another liquor company to the NASCAR sidelines.

A day after Jack Daniels announced it would stop supporting Casey Mears’ No. 07 Chevrolet for Richard Childress Racing, Beam Global Spirits & Wine, Inc. said Tuesday it was shifting sponsorship dollars to areas outside NASCAR.

Jim Beam had been the sponsor of Gordon’s No. 7 Toyota since 2005. The company will continue to fund the team through the end of this season.

I hope Robby lands on his feet and gets a new sponsor. If NASCAR had another couple of road coruses on the schedule--and they should, seeing as how the sport is supposed to be about stock cars and how many stock cars drive around all day on big ovals--Robby would be one of the marqee drivers in the sport.

#1 NASCAR needs a name change as there is nothing stock about the cars anymore and hasnt been for a long time a decal doesnt make a car be a dodge or chevy. # 2 not surprising jack and jim are pulling out they should be replaced with jack and jill to appeal to all the kiddieswatching all he snot noses whine and pout.I am 54 and tired of it all so this will be my last thought about NASCAR and the kiddie corp . race real cars with real men and you might find some of your fan base returning if not try Gerbers And Huggies they would make good sponsers for all the snot noses

I was wrong about cost its way over 30 million to run a good team and it isnt all about the economy thats part of it but the economy was booming 2 years ago with an unemployment rate of 4.5. its more the cost of racing thats gone completely crazy it cost the fans more to watch races with drivers that are far more boring then 20 years, ago when they raced hard and bumping drivers was the norm not a national scandal. You used to have a few hot heads like Spencer, Eliott and Waltrip that went nuts when someone wouldnt move over so they could win,Now they are all a bunch of whiners except Martin who is old school Also Bobby Labonte another real driver! People forget Spencer was the most hated driver in Nascar before Kurt Bush came along.

Darn. I just bought a 1.75 of Jim Beam just because of the cool Robby Gordon display that was in the State of New Hampshire liquor store last month. Jeez, I don't even drink bourbon either, not to mention what to do with that cool sweatshirt with Jim Beam and the No. 7 on the front.

This is something perfect to get conspiracy theorists (and trolls) going. Any other year, and its "The driver sucks, thats why he lost sponsorship"

Anybody ever take the economy as a reason why some sponsors are pulling out?

And Luis, the main thing that Brian France needs to do is grow a pair of balls, and kick Mike Helton's ass to the curb. Ever since Helton has had is dirty hands on the Cup Series, there have been a few questionable things that have happened. NASCAR itself I think is trying to make the Cup Series better than it is, and I do think some people need to understand that.

Most people here really need to read this article again,,Nascar did not loose the sponsor,Robbie Gordon did,,,it only effects him and his team for the future,,not Nascar,,,Nascar will still be running next year,,but Robbie may not be able too if he doesnt find someone else,,,

Nascar itself is always selling there name to keep growing,,,try buying a racing paper called Area Auto Racing News,,,it runs everyweek and has more racing news than you could ever imagine,,it also has advertising for almost every track on the east cost,,take a look someday and see how many tracks run "Nascar Sanctioned races"...who do you think gets kick backs from that?? and this is on dirt tracks,,,The hand of Nascar is bigger than most think it is

NASCAR can save at least $ 20-25 million by scrapping its "Drive For Diversity " program, fire Max Siegel and Magic Johnson, and stop with these pre-race "rock concerts". That would save another $ 4 million, since NASCAR wouldn't have to pay them to show up at the track. Darn, fans are there to see racing, not some ham and egg bar band.

Notice how AFTER Swimmer Ted kicked the bucket, two liquor manufacturers are pulling out of NASCAR sponsorship?

hey, everybody in the racing world knows what it costs to run a race, let alone 33+ practice, testing, qualifing, etc. one thing is almost a shure bet, robby gordon will be there.it is sad he's never done better in nascar.he is one heck of a driver and i mean that. how many drivers wsh they could drive one series well enough to make a living.robby does them all(cup, nationwide, trucks, irl, cart, motorcycles, off road trucks/buggys,dirt track cars and probably others i've missed) so to see jim beam leave as sponsor is sad. hey robby, when you read this ask your friend the prince of dubaui to sponsor you.that would be awesome.hendrik, roush and penske entire financial profolio would be chump change to this guy..... go robby, well see you at the races in 2010...

bad for the sport when you start loosing sponsors, but you know you should not be surprised .not enough money to go around and its going to get worse.

I wonder if it's all due to the costs of a primary sponsorship, with the companies feeling that they can spread the same amount of dollars to different venues and advertise to a larger number of people?

Here's hoping that Robby can find another primary sponsor. He's already going against the tide being a single car team, and without a primary sponsor, not a good omen for being able to race in Cup.

NASCAR is drying up on the vine, dummies like DW, that stupid groundhog, and a list of wanna be media announcers really suck! Empty seats, un sponsored cars and tracks losing their corporate name are just the tip of the iceberg! This year NASCAR had a problem getting 43 cars to race, NASCAR has operated like gestapo for a long time ruling yes for one driver and no for another!

Yahoo ran an article today showing Sprint to be 1 of the top ten companys likely to go bankrupt. How much longer do you think they are going to keep sinking money into Cup racing. Its pretty apparent that Shovelhead is right what sponsers that dont leave are being run out by the government. Im sure the they wil run all liqour companys out just like they did tobacco companys. They cant keep racing $250,000 race cars and paying drivers 10 million a year it already cost 20 million or more to race a good multi car team per year and your down to about three teams that can expect to win week in and week out .Plus 2 of those are Hendrick if you count Steward who races Hendrick engines and Tech. As for the old fans should get out maybe we should take the old drivers like Mark Martin with us it kind of embrassing to keep seeing him kick the young guns @ss every week anyway!

ok 16 whatever you say. nascar is going no where. i dont know what you are talking about, coolaid and all, but 10 years from now grumpy old fans like you will still be predicting the end of it all because you dont like the cot and brian france, you want Richard back with his STP superbird, or whatever your complaint of the day may be. And nascar will still be cranking along. without STP, without Jim Beam, and without you.

#15 - Randy, I agree with some of what you said, but you've got to be dillusional if you believe that "NASCAR can make it without them (sponsors)". NASCAR is ALL about sponsors. I guess NASCAR could make it...there just wouldn't be any cars on the track other than the pace car. Maybe they could race the emergency vehicles?

I think Nascar's problem is that their fans constantly whine about what is wrong with the sport. I love Nascar and think the racing is great. But everytime I read an article or opinion pieces the only fans represented are the crybabies. Man up and just enjoy the racing. Nobody cares for your B.S. opinions. All the negativity has to hurt attendence and viewership.

Whether you like Robby Gordon or not is irrelevant. The most important aspect of this story is that yet another major sponsor has found a better place to invest their marketing dollars. You think declining interest and TV ratings, and empty seats have anything to do with this? Hey NASCAR, just keep ignoring your fan base. After all, you guys know what's best.

Lowes leaving Charlotte.....DeWalt leaving Kenseth.....Allstate leaving the Brickyard....etc.......etc....I'd chance to bet that even Budweiser will be gone from NASCAR {& Kasey} by 2011.

But keep those heads in the sand............and in 5 years when you pull it out, you can look around and ask yourself, "WTF???"
