Memphis Motorsports Park to cease operations

  • Print

DOVER, Del. (AP)—Dover Motorsports Inc. is ceasing operations at Memphis Motorsports Park after a deal to sell the track to another investor fell through.

The 0.75-mile track has hosted a NASCAR Nationwide and Truck Series event for the last decade. The Truck Series event will move to Nashville Superspeedway next April and the Nationwide Series event will move to Gateway International Raceway next October.

Dover had agreed to sell the track to Gulf Coast Entertainment, but the company was unable to secure financing to complete the purchase.

Dover Motorsports president Denis McGlynn called the decision to cease operations at the track difficult. Refunds to ticket holders for the 2010 events will be mailed out soon.

To Shovelhead Kevin: Have you ever been to a Texas race? Uh, no you haven't. If you had ever attended a race at the big texas track you would know how awesome the racing is at that track. Texas puts on a very good race so I think you should stop telling fairy tales. Oh and by the way, what does "prolly" mean? Is that some kind of Arkansas term?
Maybe that is kind of like "he blowd up". I'll bet you use that one too.

No... wait.... it's not BigTV... it has got to be the Big Cable and Big Satellite dollars at work here. I juust cancelled my DirecTV after 6 years and now I'll miss a ton of NASCAR races .... unless I go to a bar where I might (oh, do I dare) have a couple beers. NASCAR has become SO hypocrytical, greedy, and overmanaged by suits. I'll just patronize the small tracks around here and BigRaceCAR can go play advertising. "This Caution is brought to you by Budweiser, King of Beers. Have a ice cold Bud and boogidty boogidty boogidty ... let's go racing boys!"

MMP... sad to go. Same darn thing is happening to our local track in Mansfield, OH. It had the truck races and lots of other great things going and when NeckCAR yanked the truck race it's been all downhill. And Mansfield Motorsports Park sits on great land w/ loads of room to expand. The whole facility was recently redone and is just beautiful. Why is NASCAR leaving all these small tracks to die ??? They are the places that created racings fans. Makes me sick to see BigTV replace live track fans.

Sad to see great people who work at MMP lose their livelyhoods. Most of these folks are locals who depend on the race track for income and security. Many have been there for years. Economy is still very much in a decline and putting people out of work is not the way to turn it around.

Biggest issue with MMP was oval track was too small for a NASCAR Sprint Cup race. However, that didn't matter since there were no races left to give them. Nationwide & Camping World races were good racing but poorly attended. This was due to NASCAR wanting to combine these races with their Sprint Cup races and marquee drivers not wanting to race on a off week or travel to compete in races in two different cities.

Locals used the drag strip for Test n Tunes but that does not pay the "bills". Many of them were rained out anyways. Mid South Nationals were "the" event for MMP. With "one" event each year, you can't pay the bills either.

So long Memphis Motorsports Park, we hardly knew you were there and now you are gone...

Boring boring bored!!! The most likely champion again is JJ, #48. No doubt the most boring Nascar Champ ever. ABJ, ABJ... anyone but Jimmy, this is what the crowd in turn one at the Brick Yard 400 shouted in 2008 and 2007, ABJ, ABJ, ABJ! (I missed this year for my daughters wedding). When Jimmies gonna win, it aggravates me to the point where I just turn the channel to watch mummies or some other crap. I don't know what it is about him, but he is a real yawner. Even the souvenir stands at Indy hardly carry any of JJ's stuff. Smoke, Jeff Gordon and #3 stuff blow him away! 4 time champ??? Where’s the remote?
    BTW, I'm a Wild Thing fan...figures, don't it!

Want another example of how far NASCAR has fallen and is falling?
I subscrine to Sports Illustrated and this week's issue {2Nov,2009} has exactly 0/ZERO mention of anything about NASCAR.....not even a letter to the editor.
    There's a Toyota ad w/Joe Gibbs, but that's it!

......oh how the mighty have fallen when even SI disregards them at their supposed hottest part of the season.

But, Brian-the-dumbazz, etc will still tell y'all how rosy the future is for NASCAR.
Tell me more Brian.............I like faerie tales.................

#7-David..depending on when you were @LNS, I was prolly in the pits or parked trackside {on the fence almost even w/concession stand/bathrooms & back pit enterance}.
Were you trackside or in the grandstands at LNS? Some of the best tailgating in the world is trackside at Lanier......BBQ, beer and balls-to-the-wall REAL racing!
Plus spectator racing...if ya have the car & gonads to put your motor where your mouth is. ;-)

I live in the St.Louis area and cant see why they would move another race to Gateway its nothing but a over long boring race track but that seems to be the norm these days. I have a brother that lives 20 miles from Alanta speedway and he never goes to a race there, instead he drives farther to Lanier raceway to see some good racing on a 3/8 mile track. I went to 1 race there while visiting and they put on a great show just like the short tracks around St.Louis do for a lot less money and traffic headaches. I have been to Darlington and Bristol both very good Cup tracks but they werent near the fun as the old Lake Hill speedway in Valley Park Mo. where Wallace and Scharder got their start!
