Busch crew chief Addington confused by firing

  • Print

TALLADEGA, Ala. (AP)—Kyle Busch celebrated 12 wins with crew chief Steve Addington, including a comeback victory last year at Talladega Superspeedway.

It seemed like a lifetime ago, though, on Friday as Addington prepared for his final weekend with Busch. He’ll call Sunday’s race at Talladega and then hand the job over to Dave Rogers in a firing that admittedly left Addington “pretty confused.”

“Do I agree with it? No,” Addington said. “But it is what it is, and I felt like we had a good run.”

Busch said the decision was made by team owner Joe Gibbs and president J.D. Gibbs, and it was based on lack of consistency this season.

“It seems like we’re either feast or famine—we’re either going to win the race or finish 30th,” Busch said. “Some of that’s my fault, some of that’s just not having the right stuff for me, and Joe and J.D. felt like we needed to try something new to get something of a more consistent basis and championship-caliber.”

Addington and Busch charged out of the gate at the start of the 2008 season. Busch moved to Joe Gibbs Racing after his firing from Hendrick Motorsports, and Addington got the job of trying to rein in NASCAR’s wild child.

He made it look easy with immediate results. They almost won the season-opening Daytona 500, and did get their first win together three weeks later with a victory at Atlanta.

There were eight wins in all, and Busch led the points standings for 21 weeks. Although they faltered in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship— Busch finished 10th after starting as the top seed—the duo seemed to rebound at the start of this season.

Busch has four more wins this year, but the consistency was off and a summer slump cost him a spot in the Chase. Busch missed the final qualifying spot by just eight points.

Now, six races later, JGR officials decided to make a switch atop the pit box. Rogers, crew chief for JGR in the Nationwide Series, will replace Addington beginning next week at Texas.

“I’m shocked,” said two-time series champion Tony Stewart, who saw the Addington-Busch pairing up close last year at JGR.

“It was like `You’re joking, right?’ It was hard to believe that they are splitting that combination up.”

That seemed to be the widespread feeling throughout the garage, where rival crew chiefs seemed puzzled by Addington’s ouster.

“I think it’s tough with so many positive accomplishments to lose your job,” said Alan Gustafson, who spent three seasons as Busch’s crew chief at Hendrick. “It shows the pressure a crew chief is under in this sport and how tough it is. Only time will tell if that’s the right move, but I don’t think it’s fair for Steve. My opinion is he’s done a good job.”

Gustafson and Addington used totally different styles to manage Busch. Gustafson argued with Busch—a lot—in an effort to shape the youngster into the kind of driver he thought Busch could be.

Addington was far more laid-back, and at times this season seemed powerless to stop Busch from having one of his trademark mid-race meltdowns when his car was not up to his liking.

The personality differences may have ultimately been their undoing.

“If a relationship goes stale, it’s stale. You are not going to rekindle it,” said Denny Hamlin, Busch’s teammate. “You’ve got someone who is rambunctious and someone who is reserved, and it’s tough to keep that going outside the honeymoon period.”

But it’s hard to figure out just what went wrong. Busch’s 12 victories over the last two seasons is second only to three-time series champion Jimmie Johnson, who has 13 wins—but three in the last five wins.

Busch, meanwhile, hasn’t won since Bristol in August. He did have consecutive top-10s the last two weeks, and Addington’s firing was announced the same day he won the industry’s crew chief of the week award.

“Kyle is so competitive and expects to win every week, which is good,” Gustafson said. “That’s what he’s supposed to do. I think the problem is if it doesn’t happen … that’s where you get into a situation they are in. They haven’t slipped—they still run well—but they didn’t make the Chase. That’s the elephant in the room. That’s the problem, and I don’t know that it’s fair to throw that on Steve, and that’s what’s happened.”

Wow there are very few intelligent posts on here, yes we get it losers, you think kyle busch is a cry baby, and yes some people dont like toyotas, but i pay very close attention to what kyle is doing and i would have to say most of the blame has to be put on steve addington, He is NEVER dominant anymore. He struggles to keep the car from going sideways, and the only time he is in the front is after a pitstop when his great crew gets him out quick. Now why does hamlin not have this problem. I also believe part of the decision is about Dave Rogers getting his shot in the bigs, he is a great crew chief. Also when can we get over the whole toyota thing. They have 10 wins this year. They are obviously good and not going anywhere. Obviously not Hendrick chevy good but no one is.

Wow I'm no JGR fan since they switched to Toyota's but damn what a huge mistake letting Steve Addington go just because crybaby Kyle can't keep his eye on the ball throughout the whole season. If Tony Stewart's smart he'll hire him for Stewart/Haas. He'll definitely not have any problem getting a job by next season if not next week.

Most of you Kyle Busch haters are as uninformed as people can be! Can you not see the truth for all of the hatred you carry? Amazes me ! I just watched a post race interview with Kyle Busch, were he states that the guys are giving him good race cars, they are just behind the game a bit. He then went on to say "as a driver if he's not winning races, HE'S not doing his job!" I didn't hear any "they" or any "cry baby" in any of this interview. He is an extremely competitive racer- who believes 2nd place is the FIRST LOSER!!!!!! Which most real racers do. You people need to get educated before you sound off on him all the time. FYI- As I said before, I am not a Kyle Busch fan- just tired of seeing and hearing everyone bash him because he is so competitive. Very talented driver!

Right on, Charlie Brown. Couldnt have said it better myself other than to add, "the adjustment needs to be one like never seen before."

Steve Addington is a good crew chief. This had nothing to do with Crew Chiefs abilitys or the drivers abilities. Kyle can win with any crew chief on the box, look at the Nationwide standings haters. This has to do with personality clashes. Jimmy and Chad win Championships because they don't clash. I just hope Steve doesn't go to Hendrick because he will never see another win if he's on the 88 box. It doesn't matter how good the car is Junior can't win. He's at best a mediocre driver and a cry baby.

if any one should be fired it should be CRY BABY KYLE BUSH. he's the biggest cry baby of all times. i know he likes to win but so does every one else. but if he doesn't win its every one else's fault. then when he doesn't win he goes to his motor home and POUTS like a little BABY. and if he does stick around for a interview he blames everyone else. GET RID OF KLYE BUSH. JGR AND YOU'LL HAVE A WINNING TEAM INSTEAD OF A CRY BABY TEAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kyle is a cry baby, it's never his fault. A crew chief change will have the same results. The boy needs a attitude adjustment.

Why is it when it's Junior's car, the crew chief is at fault? With Kyle, you boneheads always blame Kyle. Lord knows, if Junior doesn't win, it's gotta be somebody else's fault.

This is your typicial owner of these cars. How many owners can get in these cars and drive. Yes there is a couple. There's some that hasn't; Gibbs is one of them,he knows FOOTBALL he knows if a player is not good take him out. Here he doesn't know the difference between the driver & the car. THE CAR IS FAST. You know this because the car is always out front or my favorite them comming from the backto the front in no time. The DRIVER needs to know when to push and when not to.THE CREW CHIEF IS NOT DRIVING THE CAR!!!!!Hello HELLO HELLO any JOe GIBBS OUT THERE!!!! YOU HAVE JUST KILLED YOUR TEAM You need to have a serious talk with MR KYLE BUSCHTELL HIM IF HE DON'T GET THAT CHIP OFF HIS SHOULDER HE IS !!!!! FIRED!!!!!!!!!!. BRING BACK ADDINTON BRIG BACK ADDINTON BRING BACK ADDINTON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The feast or famine as Busch called it was HIS OWN doing or undoing if you would have it!
If your car isn't perfect deal with it and salvage the best finish you can! That is what everyone else does!
Instead he overdrives the car because his ego won't let him not be in front and bounces it off the wall until he tears it up or wrecks himself and somebody else out!
Basically Gibbs got it wrong! Punish the driver not the Crew Chief!

Busch is such a social trainwreck its not even funny.
This wasnt even by his direct doing, and yet it still falls at his shoes. IMO.

Some how, and some way, Shrub seems to find a way to ostricize himself away from the people he either works for, or drives for. Even his own friends.

Kurt Busch/ Rick Hendrick/ Alan Gustofson/ Steve Addington/ Nascar fans.

Its sad. I think the guy has real talent. HMS and JGR woldnt have taken a chance on him, if he didn't. And despite his OBVIOUS insercurites with life, He can actually come off as a nice guy, when he feels like it.

I hear he is going to be a F1 guy soon. So I'm guessing he is just about out of his nine lives with NASCAR. atleatst he will have a great "something" to fall back on.

    For now..........

You know, it's people like Michael F who post rediculous statements on these boards without thinking first, who eventually make other readers believe that all Nascar fans are as uneducated as he is! One really should think and read your comments before pushing the "post comment" button - this might prevent one from looking like the jack-*** that Michael F just made himself out to be. Kyle Busch- like him or not- is hands down one of the best, if not THE best, pure natural born talented race car drivers currently running in the Nascar circuits. No one can argue that point. Period. End of discussion. And for the record, I don't personally care for Kyle Busch or his attitude, but respect his talent without question!

Gibbs racing was done for as soon as JD took over.As far as cry baby Kyle, they should have fired him instead of Addington.Good luck in your new crew chief position next year.Hendrick could use a new guy or two.So could RCR.

Busch needs a crew chief like montoya has. when juan pablo gets upset, his crew chief gets him to focus and remember the big picture. all year they ran for top 12 finishes, and they are in the chase and doing well. whover is kyle's crew chief has to keep him focused and give him a car that he can drive. its a tough job for sure, but if someone does it right, they could be the crew chief for a sprint cup champion.

It's NOT hard to figure out what went wrong. With the Chase looming over your head all season, wins aren't good enough since you can't win every race. No fault whatsoever on Steve's part, he couldn't convince Kyle that Top10s and Top5s are as necessary as wins. Maybe the next guy Dave will have better chemistry with Kyle (ie keep Kyle in check as opposed to letting him rant) although I'm not too sure about his COT skill, and I think Kyle has figured out the Top10 thing for himself. Steve is a very capable CC and will land somewhere if not JGR 02. But I hope he's not fooling himself that the main reason he and Kyle won so much, was Kyle. He'll not have similar win counts with a lesser driver.
