Jimmie Johnson wrecks on 3rd lap in Texas

  • Print

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP)—Jimmie Johnson crashed on the third lap of the NASCAR race at Texas, where he was trying to move closer to an unprecedented fourth consecutive Sprint Cup season championship.

He returned to the track on lap 115 in a rebuilt car.

Johnson was coming out of Turn 2 on the third lap Sunday when Sam Hornish got loose after being tapped by David Reutimann.

Hornish made contact with Johnson and the series points leader scraped the outside wall. He looked like he may save his car before he was hit again by Hornish, knocking Johnson’s No. 48 Chevrolet hard into the inside wall.

“By the time that I knew that I was hit, I was already sideways,” Hornish said. “I was just trying to correct it and not get into the 48. Obviously, you don’t ever want to detract from the championship when you’re not really even involved in it.”

It took more than an hour to repair Johnson’s car, which was solid black on the front and rear when it got back in the race. Within a couple of laps, Johnson had moved out of last place, up two spots to 40th, though he was still 118 laps behind leader Kyle Busch at the time.

Hornish got back on the track only two laps after the wreck with a lot of tape on the car.

Crew members replaced the front and rear suspensions and the driveshaft of Johnson’s car, along with other repairs. It looked like a makeshift body shop in the garage area, with crew members from teammate Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr. helping out.

Chad Knaus, Johnson’s crew chief, slammed his fist on the team’s pit box when the accident happened. A few minutes later, he could be heard on the radio calmly telling his crew to take their time and get it right.

Johnson came into the race with a 184-point lead over teammate Mark Martin and 192 over Gordon, the polesitter, though he could not have clinched Sunday even with a victory. There are two races left after Texas.

On lap 87, Hornish got loose coming out of Turn 2 again, spinning and making hard contact against the wall. His crew worked on pit row to make repairs to the left side of the car.

Hey Truth-Teller I am not a sissy --- boy and I am not on the 48 band wagon. I am for Mark Martin. Just because you are not a fan you have to see the talent there. As for Hendrick making the 24 team work on Jimmies car. Jeff has an invested interest in that car. He owns it. DUH!!!! If you really dont give a crap then quit watching. I am certain no will car.

#58 I like JJ as much as the next guy, but the deal with Hornish was just a racing deal. the 77 got loose and JJ was there. That's why they call it racing. Hornish is having problems and they have a lot of work to do to get him running right. Most of the open wheel guy take a few years to get it going.

I became a Jimmie Johnson fan because he was driving for Lowes, and I was fairly new to NASCAR, had only watched for a couple seasons before him, but Skinner SUCKED ASS. When Jimmie came on as Lowes driver (my husband at the time works for Lowes), I didn't know him from adam, but figured I would give him a chance. I can tell you now I was never a fan of any other driver, but I am a loyal and true Jimmie fan. He is a great talented driver, he is a great person, he does great things for charity and he is well spoken (which is why alot of the haters hate him to begin with.. not sure why they would hate someone for being well spoken and comfortable in front of the camera unlike someone else I won't mention..lol) I will always be a fan of his and his team, even if he stops driving for Lowes and drives for someone else (as I am now divorced from my husband that works there), I will follow him to any team, but I hope he stays with HMS because they are a perfect fit! Not all JJ fans are just jumping on the 48 bandwagon because he is winning, most of his fans can actually see his true talent and what kind of guy he is and have been a fan since he started in cup or maybe before that even.

I will be ecstatic if he wins a 4th and very proud to be his fan whether he wins or not, and if he doesn't win then it would be great to see Mark finally win one (even though I'm not really a fan of him it would be nice after all those years of trying) with HMS, because after all, if anyone can get him a win its HMS, no one else could..lol

Ok ,I know who Sam Hornish JR is and where he came from & from where I been sitting looks like needs too go back there, because he does not know how to drive a stock car. What has he accomplished in his 2 years of racing in Nascar? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING,so Penske racing needs to can him. All he does is get in the way at every track. I have seen better GO-CART drivers than him. Good try Roger Penske but time to hire someone who can hall the mail.

Lori D I so agree with you. I feel bad for the Johnson haters who have Kyle or Kurt or Kenseth(the biggest whinniers in NASCAR) as their favorite driver. Just because their driver doesn't win they blame it on Jimmie, when he wins. It's not his fault that he's better than almost everyone in the series.

C'mon jj, you can do it, two more races, two dnf's. get'em mark, you the man. as for you other geniuses running nascar into the ground, here's an idea for you. after trying to watch the bs at talledega i think you guys should do away with the cars all together and have the crew chiefs pull their drivers around the track in a little red wagon. no tripping you dangerous guys. very soon to be ex nascar fan.

All of the NASCAR whinners that are bored watching Jimmie Johnson run away with a 4th straight championship should be happy. Now there is some suspence. Now for the bad news. Most of the unhappy campers were Earnhadt fans that are closet Jr fans, who finished a consistent 25th. Even on a bad day for Johnson - Earnhardt sucks.

HEy get off Hornish. He was not the cause of that wreck and if you were watching the race you would know that. How do you think he felt by not being able to avoid hitting Jimmie. Im sure he felt bad and if I remember he did say so in interview.

Go to the nascar.com website and read the article where Martin and Gordon say they missed an opportunity with JJ wrecking and all. Gordon takes the blame, says he is terrible at Texas, the crew did great to get him to 13th, yada, yada, yada. Gordon showing true character by not throwing LeTarte under the bus. But he must know in his heart that Steve is just not cut out to be a crew chief. Too tight, too loose, never can get it right. I personally think Jeff has lost a bit of his edge but he should nevertheless have more than one win in his last 70 or 80 starts.

I knew the conspiracy theorists would be on here today.lol I guess if I started talking about government conspiracies,y'all would call me nuts.lol

I realize that Sam Hornish wrecks at almost every race, but if you watch the video,David Reutimann got into the back of Hornish and caused him to run up the track,so you can't blame this one on Hornish.

Truth_Teller - evidently you wouldn't know the truth if it hit you in the forehead... and you could use a good molly-whoppin', from where I sit -

Who owns half of JJ's car?? hmmm... how about one Jeff Gordon... so, he was helping himself -

Multiply that my the square root of HMS ALWAYS HELPS EACH OTHER - something other teams, and you, just won't understand... and you can now explain why those cars are 1/2/3 in points...year, after year, after year, after..... Now - go learn something, so you can tell the truth...

That is the sad part of this crazy Chase. The last ten races are stressfilled for the drivers in the chase and the ones out of it. THe ones out of it live in fear that they will take one of them out even by accident. I felt sorry for Hornish he felt so bad that he couldnt avoid hitting Jimmie. THe chase is screwed up that is for sure.

I agree JJ is very talented as a driver. I'm no fan, but not a hater either.. I'm a Kenesth "The Robot" fan so I know a talented driver when I see one, after all we have the chace in large part due to his consistent excellent driving..

As for JJ, he'll probably win #4 this year, but as I said, don't be surprised if another "incident" happens next week that tightens up the points to around 20-30 between JJ & MM going to Homestead... It's all about the $$$'s for the France Empire...

So pitiful - the no-talent losers that compete against Jimmie Johnson can only hope to win a championship by taking him out. That's much more macho than actually DRIVING well. Even more pathetic are the Jimmie Johnson haters that can't stand him because he has more talent than their sorry ass drivers. And, by the way, no band-wagon jumper here. I've been a fan since his 3rd cup series race - when even other nascar fans would say "Jimmie who?". So sit back and watch the Jimmie Johnson Show - he's going to take the trophy home this year and then saddle up for number 5!

No one thinks it's a tad bit fishy that the points leader is taken out on the 3rd lap? NASCAR needed to tighten up the points race badly to get any kind of attention for the last 3 races, and magically Hornish takes out Johnson.. hmm.... I'm no conspiracy type, but this seems a little to fortuitous to me for France Jr. & Co....

Look for another JJ wreck or mechanical failure within the 1st 50 laps next weekend...

@ post #32 - The chasers have there own race? Wow, just when I though all the dumb ideas had been brought to the table, this one shows up. Here's a better idea for ya...GET RID OF THE CHASE!! In the five year of the chase, 3 of the points races would have actually been better without it, and it looks like this year will make 4! Without the chase, out last 5 Champions would have been Gordon, Stewart, Johnson, Gordon and Edwards rather than Kurt Busch, Stewart and Johnson 3 times. The Chase is a joke and needs to go.
